The attack took place in the city of Sapele, as about 50 children were gathered for an Arabic class.

Delta State police spokesman Charles Muka said that the attackers drove by a school and threw homemade explosives into a classroom Tuesday morning.

The wounded children were all aged younger than nine, Reuters reported. At least one was aged four.

Investigators suspect a local vigilante group was behind the incident, Muka added.

The latest incident follows coordinated attacks by radical Islamist militants on Christmas Day, which killed at least 39 people.

Analysts say the attacks risk reviving sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

The radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram? has claimed responsbility for the church attacks. Boko Haram aims to impose Islamic Shariah law across Nigeria.

Many northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Meanwhile, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state ? on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no immediate suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings.

Will Chinese Baseball Make it to the Big Leagues? (Time.com)

The field took just four months to build amid the high-rise apartment blocks on the outskirts of Changzhou, an anonymous,second-tier city about 100 miles west of Shanghai in eastern China. Then, in this Chinese version of Field of Dreams, came the players, each with a nickname bestowed by their American coach, Rick Dell: V.B., or Volleyball Boy, a lanky 14-year-old from Jiangsu province whose mother was a volleyball player; Xiao (Little) Baby Ruth, the pudgy catcher and joker of the team; and Tony, who Dell says "looks like a little Italian guy" from far away.

If all goes according to plan, Xiao BabyRuth or Chinese Tony may one day be playing for the Red Sox or Yankees in Major League Baseball. It may sound far-fetched, but watching these middle- and high-school kids make running catches in the outfield and throw fastballs upwards of 82 mph, it's not totally inconceivable. The Changzhou development center, which opened in September, is MLB's second training school in China aiming to produce players who might one day have a shot at the Majors, or more realistically, China's national baseball league. But finding the Yao Ming of baseball isn't the only objective. MLB is also desperate to bring back a sport that was wiped out during the Cultural Revolution and make it as popular inChina today as it is in Japan and Korea. (Read about baseball dreams in the Dominican Republic.)

This may be difficult given that America's favorite pastime is still relatively unknown in China, with only about 4 million players compared to the estimated 300 million who play basketball. But MLB officials are optimistic, largely due to the success of the sport across Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Baseball has a long history in China, too. The game was introduced to the country over a century ago by Chinese students returning home from Yale University. Mao Zedong banned it during the Cultural Revolution -- unlike his beloved basketball -- but it re-emerged after his death, eventually leading to the formation of the professional China Baseball League in 2002. In recent years, China has also made steady progress on the international stage, getting a hugely gratifying -- and high-profile -- victory over rival Chinese Taipei (also known as Taiwan) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jim Small, the Tokyo-based vice president of MLB Asia, believes baseball is well suited to Chinese culture. An official oncetold him that, were he around, Confucius himself might be a fan. "There's a lot of Confucian ideas in the game of baseball. It's the only real team sport where there's no clock. It's about sacrifice. It's one of the few times where you actually sacrifice yourself for the better of the team," he says. China also takes immense pride in excelling in sports it's not supposed to. Remember Li Na's victory at the French Open? "Ten years ago, people thought you're not going to have Chinese sprinters or Chinese swimmers and now they're the best of the world in those (sports), so why not baseball?" Small says.(See the 10 worst MLB stars.)

Still, MLB officials admit it will take time toincrease the visibility of a sport as nuanced as baseball. The long-term strategy has been a grassroots approach. MLB has introduced baseball to 120elementary schools in five cities through a program called Play Ball!, with an annual, nationwide tournament for the best schools in the spring. It's also started a traveling baseball theme park that toured 20 cities this year, attracting some 2.5 million visitors. And a Mandarin-language version of This Week in Baseball, a weekly MLB highlights show in the U.S., is now broadcast on eight regional Chinese networks.

But bolstering the sport's popularity mayultimately depend upon producing a Chinese star, says Leon Xie, managing director of MLB China. "It's called the Yao Ming effect," he says. "You get your superstar, then you get your fan base, and then that will get us closer to our ultimate goal, to get baseball back to the country." This is why the MLB training centers in Changzhou and nearby Wuxi, which was set up in 2009, are so important.

When MLB opened its Wuxi center, it recruited players locally and had to start with the basics. "The first time most kids had been on a baseball field was the first day we had practice," says Dell, who was head baseball coach at the College of New Jersey for 27 years before moving to China to oversee the development program. Two years later, officials were able to travel the country to scout talent for the Changzhou center, recruiting youngsters from as far away as Qinghai province in the west, where the game is popular among Tibetans, to Guangdong province in the south, to Beijing in the north. "There are independent pockets of baseball that are popping up ... that are being initiated by interested individuals who might be Korean or Chinese-Americans or Americans," Dell says. "What we've started to do is connect the dots."

The progress in Changzhou has been quick -- and the players' enthusiasm is palpable. After class on a recent weekday, the 20 boys in the program hit the field wearing bright blue and red jerseys, black Nike cleats, and caps from different MLB teams for their weekly in-house game. The red team strikes first, scoring two runs on an overthrown ball to first, but the blue team rallies in its final at-bat. After one batter safely reaches base -- prompting his teammate to yell "Safe!" in English -- Bama, a 14-year-old Tibetan player from Qinghai, steps to the plate. He cracks the ball to the outfield and sprints to first as his teammates go nuts in the dugout. The comeback is short-lived, though. The light is fading and Dell calls the game.

Bama, whose nickname sounds like his Tibetan name Huadan Banma, says afterward that he only started playing three years ago and his dream is to one day make it to MLB like his idol, Alex Rodriguez. "If I can succeed, I want to earn lots of money that I can use to help others," he says quietly. But even if there aren't any future Major Leaguers on the field today, Dell says, baseball is making inroads. "We've done things slowly and deliberately," he says. "We wanted to do real things. What you see here is a real thing."

Pets

Prudence Wants a Pet
by Cathleen Daly
illustrations by Stephen Michael King
Roaring Brook Press, 2011
review copy provided by the publisher

Prudence really really wants a pet, but her parents (seen only from the waste down in the illustrations) tell her they cost too much and make noise. So Prudence gets a pet branch. Branch is an outdoor pet who lives on the front porch and who has tripped Prudence's father eight times. "Dad broke Branch into little bits and put them on the woodpile." But Prudence is not daunted. She has a new pet. Its name is Twig. But Twig lives in her pocket and one day Twig runs away in the rinse cycle. Prudence tries one unique, inanimate pet after another. Her persistence finally gets her parents' attention -- just in time for her birthday.

Jane and Mizmow
by Matthew S. Armstrong
Harper, 2011
review copy provided by the publisher

This is a different kind of pet book. Jane has a pet -- a monster she finds in a red cap at the base of a tree (what is it with red caps this year???). Jane and Mizmow are best friends until the day they argue over the red hat, warm from the dryer, and pull it into two parts. Then, just like the hat, the two friends are pulled apart. Luckily, they find a way to repair their friendship in the end.

If you've read any of the FLIGHT graphic novel short story anthologies edited by Kazu Kibuishi, that's where you've met these characters before. This book has a graphic novel feel to it, and would have worked perfectly well as a wordless picture book -- the captions seem like an afterthought.

FBI shooting range is popular deer hangout

QUANTICO, Va. (AP) ? Call it a playground for Bambi and G-Men, where imaginary criminals are hunted and deer are the spectators.

The 547-acre FBI Academy, where some of the nation's best marksmen fire off more than 1 million bullets every month, happens to be one of the safest places for deer during hunting season.

The property on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., is home to some of the FBI's most elite forces and training programs as well as a de facto wildlife refuge where deer, fox, wild turkeys, groundhogs and vultures roam fearless and free.

In recent years, a black bear was spotted running across a parking lot, and a groundhog cornered an FBI agent coming out of the cafeteria, hoping to score some human food, FBI spokesman Kurt Crawford said. Turkey vultures are often seen perched atop the 500,000-square-foot national crime lab where the FBI analyzes evidence, including the remains of the former al-Qaida leader in Iraq.

The wild animals are as much a fixture at the academy as the hostage rescue team and criminal profilers.

The most common furry friends on the sprawling campus some 30 miles outside Washington are the deer, a regular at the shooting ranges, driving courses and physical training trails.

On a December afternoon, deer grazed above one of the academy's 16 practice shooting ranges. They stood just 15 feet away from the paper targets. Nearby, shots popped loudly from a Colt M4 Carbine rifle, and the white-tailed deer did not flinch.

"They're pretty immune to the sound," said Sean Boyle, supervisory special agent bomb technician and principal firearms instructor for the Critical Incident Response Group based at the academy. The deer typically graze on top of the berm, about 15 feet away from the targets and rarely go directly in the line of fire. Boyle said he doesn't recall an instance where a deer was shot accidentally.

"It's like they think, 'We've pushed the limit for this far, and all our generations have pushed the limit for this far,'" Boyle said. "They're just so docile around here. They don't know what a gun is."

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries does not keep direct tabs on the deer population at the FBI academy, but a spokeswoman said statewide the deer population has remained about the same over the past decade, partly because of regulated hunting. Licensed deer hunters are allowed on parts of the Marine Corps base but not at the academy where the FBI does not hunt its animals.

At the FBI Academy, the deer have even become part of the training in some of the driving courses, said Tim Moles, the supervisory special agent who oversees the Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, where recruits learn to avoid crashing their cars and conduct surveillance without being spotted. The deer are convenient when recruits learn to avoid collisions, Moles said. "There's times when it seems like they're playing chicken with us," Moles said. "We respect them because they can do damage. We'd rather avoid all deer stories in this end of the academy."

For the most part, the deer have stayed out of trouble. Twice, however, deer have eaten freshly-planted pansies at the academy's 9/11 memorial courtyard, Crawford said. Eventually a fence was built to keep the flowers off limits.

Deer have been known to interrupt physical training, too.

"We've had the deer walk across the middle of the track during the 300-meter sprint," said Susann Dreiling, unit chief of the academy's physical training unit.

To become an agent, recruits must pass a physical fitness test. They are scored on how fast they can run and how many push-ups and sit-ups they perform. Sometimes, training will involve running a quarter-mile path along the lake area of the academy, stopping for push-ups, running some more and breaking to box, Dreiling said.

During these exercises, a mother and her fawns are often close by.

"They just stand there and watch as if they're evaluating them," Dreiling said, "just like the instructors are."

Appeals court delays SEC-Citigroup fraud case (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Securities and Exchange Commission won a delay in its securities fraud lawsuit against Citigroup Inc, as the regulator tries to appeal a judge's decision to reject its $285 million settlement with the bank.

The case will be put on hold until a motions panel on January 17 begins considering the SEC's bid for a longer delay so it can pursue an expedited appeal, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said in its order on Tuesday afternoon.

That order was made public 78 seconds before U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, who rejected the Citigroup settlement last month, issued a ruling opposing any delay in the case, court records show. Citigroup supported the SEC's request for a delay.

The rulings come as the SEC tries to ensure it can continue settling enforcement cases without requiring corporate defendants to address whether they did anything wrong.

That practice was called into question when Rakoff on November 28 harshly rejected the proposed settlement with New York-based Citigroup.

He said the SEC's failure to require Citigroup to admit or deny its charges left him no way to know whether the settlement was fair. Rakoff also called the $285 million payout "pocket change" for the third-largest U.S. bank.

But the SEC said that ruling was "legal error," at odds with decades of court decisions allowing such settlements and letting investors get faster recoveries, and could affect its ability to reach similar accords with other companies.

SEC spokesman John Nester declined to comment. Citigroup spokeswoman Danielle Romero-Apsilos repeated that the bank disagreed with Rakoff's November 28 decision, and would have "substantial factual and legal defenses" at a trial.

The October 19 settlement was intended to resolve charges that Citigroup sold $1 billion of risky mortgage-linked securities in 2007 without telling investors that it was betting against the debt, and caused more than $700 million of losses.

Citigroup's $285 million payment was to include $160 million of disgorged profit and fees, $30 million of interest and a $95 million civil fine.

IRREPARABLE HARM, OR ILLUSORY HARM?

In a filing on Tuesday morning with the 2nd Circuit, the SEC said the urgency to put the case on hold came after Rakoff in a teleconference this month told Citigroup to answer the charges by January 3, 2012 - or 27 days sooner than federal rules require.

An answer can force Citigroup to deny some or all of the SEC allegations, or seek to dismiss the case entirely.

But this would cause the SEC "irreparable harm" by forcing it to devote substantial resources to the case, and would "disrupt a central negotiated provision" in which Citigroup agreed not to deny the allegations, the regulator said.

In his decision on Tuesday, which the motions panel may choose to follow or not follow, Rakoff said it is "patently clear" there was no statutory basis to appeal his November 28 ruling, and "derail the orderly conduct" of the case.

The judge said this was because the appeal focused on his alleged error in demanding more facts about the case, rather than on the injunctive relief provided by the settlement.

He also said the alleged harm faced by the SEC was "largely illusory" because the regulator is pursuing a related case arising out of the same facts against a Citigroup employee, director Brian Stoker, who contests the regulator's charges.

The SEC has asked Congress for authority to seek larger penalties in corporate cases than the law now allows.

Rakoff has set a July 16, 2012 trial date.

The cases are SEC v Citigroup Global Markets Inc, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-05227; and U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-07387.

Presidential buzz surrounds leading figure of Russia's protest movement

Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin and leader in Russia's protest movement, could pose a tough threat to his presidential bid.

Russian blogger-cum-folk-hero Alexei Navalny, who is already being discussed as a potential contender to challenge Vladimir Putin in upcoming presidential polls, was released from a Moscow prison Wednesday to the wild cheers of supporters.

Mr. Navalny, whose trenchant and well-documented attacks on Kremlin corruption?have migrated from the Internet to the streets in recent weeks, was arrested and sentenced to 15 days in prison after he took part in an unsanctioned rally to protest alleged vote-rigging in Russia's Dec. 4 parliamentary election.

"These 15 days have taught me not to be afraid. I am not alone. We are the majority," he told a jubilant crowd of supporters.?"I was imprisoned in one country and am being released into another," he added.

He pledged "extraordinary efforts" to build momentum in the protest movement, which saw at least 30,000 mostly young and middle class demonstrators rally on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on Dec. 10 to demand that the allegedly fraud-tainted elections be cancelled and re-staged under fair rules and conditions.

The next rally is set for this Saturday in Moscow, and well over 30,000 people have already signed a Facebook-based pledge to attend. Russian authorities have permitted the rally, but given?covert police actions aimed at discrediting leaders and splitting the movement, they may be extremely worried that the protests could become a real threat to Kremlin dominance.

Navalny is the author of the term "party of rogues and thieves" to describe Mr. Putin's ruling United Russia party (UR), a phrase that went viral in Russia and may have contributed as much as any other factor to UR's massive loss of support in the election.

Even with what critics estimate as up to 20 percent fraudulent boost in its vote tally, UR barely managed to eke out a 50 percent victory in the polls.

After the New Year break, Russia will launch into presidential polls that will see Putin face off against handful of drearily familiar, lackluster opponents, including Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and liberal Yabloko chief Grigory Yavlinsky ? most of whom?have been defeated repeatedly in set-piece elections by Putin.?

A new contender is tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov,?who announced his candidacy last week in the wake of the massive Moscow protest. But few think Mr. Prokhorov, a superwealthy "oligarch" who gained his fortune through murky wheeling-and-dealing in the wild 1990s, can attract any votes beyond Russia's narrow business and emerging professional elites.

Many experts say Navalny, with his street cred and reputation as a democratic nationalist, could be the candidate to appeal beyond the confines of downtown Moscow and pose a genuine challenge in Putin's vast provincial and working class base ? if he were allowed to run.

"I think Navalny is the leader of the future," says Konstantin Bakulev, director of the independent Institute of Socio-Economic Modernization in Moscow. "He has all the right things going for him: he's a new face, not linked to any of the old-line political parties, and he's really trending right now. People say he's a nationalist, but he's really a patriot. If he proves he can work with people, he will go places."

Upon his release Wednesday morning, Navalny fueled speculation about a possible presidential run by aiming a sharp rhetorical barb at Putin personally.

"The party of rogues and thieves is putting forward its chief rogue and its top thief to run for the presidency," Navalny said. "We must vote against him, struggle against him."

Hajime Research is assembling a robot taller than you, Mr. Stark couldn't be more proud (video)

Not only are robots getting their own social networks, but now the plan is for them to become increasingly taller than us humans -- at least that's what the people at Hajime Research have in mind. The company has in its strategic plans the ultimate goal of building a 59-foot large machine that could be a comic-book character all on its own; before it can do so, though, it's starting with a 13-foot humanoid. Hajime Sakamoto is the man behind the bizarre idea, and if there's anyone that can do, it's him. After all, in 2009 he built a seven-foot droid that remains one of the tallest this side of Saturn. Don't believe us? Catch the video after the break.

Slidell couple accused of insurance fraud in sale of boat | NOLA.com

Two Slidell residents who allegedly sold their boat to a couple in Florida after claiming it was lost during Hurricane Katrina have been cited with insurance fraud charges, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Robert F. Angle, 78, and his 77-year-old wife, Joyce Angle, reported their boat was gone after the August 2005 storm and collected money on it from their insurance company, authorities said.

But investigators believe the Angles recently dealt that same boat to people from Lee County, Fla.

Authorities took note of the situation when the Angles' customers registered the boat?in their state, DWF spokesman Adam Einck said. Agents with Wildlife and Fisheries as well as with the National Insurance Crime Bureau launched a joint investigation into the matter.

Einck said the probe determined Robert and Joyce Angle committed theft by insurance fraud, filed false public documents and injured official records. They received citations for the violations on Dec. 15.

If convicted of insurance fraud theft, the Angles face a maximum of 10 years in prison and up to $3,000 in fines. Injuring records and filing false ones each carry a fine of no more than $5,000 and up to five years in prison.

Einck added that, by paying the Angles' claim, the insurer for the Slidell pair became the owner of the boat at the center of the case. The company has since seized the watercraft, and the Floridians who purchased it from the Angles no longer have it.

Madison Mayor Blames State For Tax Increase

It's property tax time in the city of Madison, and a letter from Mayor Paul Soglin blames the state for a local tax increase.

It all has to do with how much money local governments get from the state each year through what's called "shared revenue," which is a portion of state income taxes shared to help cover government costs.

This year, Madison took a 25 percent cut, and the mayor said that's part of why homeowners' tax bills may have gone up this year.

As resident Charles Quackenboss made his way to city hall to pay his property tax bill, he said it wasn't as bad as he expected.

"It was up about $150 over last year, and I think that is outstanding," said Quackenboss after paying his bill. "I think the mayor and county executive did a good job of keeping the tax levy reasonable. It could have gone up a lot more."

City of Madison taxes went up 3.7 percent this year, and in a letter with tax bills the mayor said that's primarily because of a cut in state aid.

"There is no question that the state's shared revenue decisions have driven up the property tax in Madison," said Soglin.

Soglin argued that the formula to figure out local aids needs to change. Although Madison is the second largest city in the state, it gets the 15th most shared revenue.

"The formula was well-intended to deal with issues of population and poverty, but it was always assumed that the state would be fair in terms of the funding," said Soglin.

Todd Berry, of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, said that's exactly why Madison gets less -- because it is considered a property-wealthy city.

"Either the appropriation has to be made larger so Madison will compete for some money, or they've got to take it away from poorer communities like Milwaukee, Beloit or Racine to give it to Madison," said Berry. "So it is a little unfair to suggest that the state is entirely to blame here."

But as Quackenboss looks at his bill, he said he thinks the city should get more money, too.

"When you're considering Madison, you must consider city services to all state buildings," said Quackenboss. "I don't think we get all the state money that we should for that."

Soglin and Berry said the other problem is that the funding formula hasn't really been used since the early 2000s. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau confirmed that local aids have been flat or cut since the early 2000s under Gov. Jim Doyle and Gov. Scott Walker.

Beckham's MLS run over?

Galaxy star reportedly struck deal with French club Paris Saint-Germain

Image: 2011 MLS Cup - LA Galaxy Training SessionGetty Images

David Beckham, 36, helped lead the Los Angeles?Galaxy to the Major League Soccer title this season.

updated 8:58 p.m. ET Dec. 20, 2011

PARIS - David Beckham is not yet a Paris Saint-Germain player, with French reports that a deal has been completed being described as "premature" by his management company.

The 36-year-old former England captain has been in talks with the French capital club, but could still accept an offer to stay at the Los Angeles Galaxy where his five-year deal ended after winning his first MLS Cup last month

"No agreement has been reached with any club yet - talks of a deal are premature," Beckham's management company, XIX Entertainment, said in a statement to The Associated Press. "David has yet to make a final decision on his future."

The French media, though, seemed confident that Beckham will join big-spending PSG, with dailies L'Equipe and Le Parisien reporting in their Wednesday editions that Beckham has agreed a deal to join the club next month.

Le Parisien claimed that Beckham would earn 800,000 euros ($1.05 million) per month at PSG, whose wealthy Qatari owners have spent more than 85 million euros ($111 million) on players since buying the club in May.

While Beckham's England career is effectively over, he is eager to remain playing for a top side so he is considered for a spot in Britain's squad for the 2012 London Olympics.

Can nerve growth factor gene therapy prevent diabetic heart disease?

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and can reduce blood supply to the heart tissue and damage cardiac cells, resulting in heart failure.

New research has investigated if nerve growth factor (NGF) gene therapy can prevent diabetic heart failure and small vascular disease in mice.

The study by Professor Costanza Emanueli, British Heart Foundation Senior Research Fellow and colleagues of the Bristol Heart Institute in the Regenerative Medicine Section of the School of Clinical Sciences at the University of Bristol is published online in Diabetes, which is the journal of the American Diabetes Association.

Scientists believe that NGF has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system but the possibility that cardiac NGF gene therapy could prevent diabetes-induced heart failure has not been previously studied.

The team investigated whether increasing the myocardial level of NGF by using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors could prevent the diabetic heart from failure. AAVs are small non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA viruses that can potentially infect all cell types. They exist in different forms, allowing to better target different cells for gene therapy, including after AAV injection in a vein. Importantly, at variance from more popular viral vectors, AAVs allow for virtually permanent increased level of a therapeutic protein.

Professor Emanueli said: "Our study represents a major advance in tackling heart disease in diabetics, a leading cause of death in the western world. It also represents one important step forward in our goal for translating NGF-based therapies in cardiovascular patients.

"The critical scientific finding from our research is that diabetes reduces cardiac level of NGF. Most importantly, engineering the diabetic heart with AAVs to make it produce NGF can prevent heart failure."

Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the BHF, added: "Targeted gene therapy is now becoming a realistic prospect for several human diseases. This study suggests that there is real promise for NGF gene therapy in future to alleviate heart failure in diabetic patients -- a major and often fatal complication of their disease."

Type 1 diabetes mellitus was induced in mice by damaging their insulin producing pancreatic cells with streptozotocin. Non-diabetic age-matched control mice were studied for reference.

Murine NGF mRNA expression in the heart was measured by real-time RT-PCR in mice at 12 weeks of diabetes or controls. In separate experiments, at two weeks of diabetes, cardiac expression of human NGF or the AAV control ?-Gal genes was induced by either intra-myocardial injection of adeno-associated virus vectors serotype 2 (AAV2) or systemic injection of AAV9, which is especially able to target cardiac cells. Non-diabetic mice received AAV2-?-Gal or AAV9-?-Gal.

The researchers found diabetes lowered the cardiac expression of endogenous NGF mRNA. A progressive deterioration of cardiac function and left ventricular chamber dilatation appeared in ?-Gal-treated diabetic mice. At 12 weeks of diabetes, ?-Gal-treated mice showed myocardial microvascular rarefaction, hypoperfusion, more interstitial fibrosis and increased apoptosis of endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes. NGF gene therapy using either AAV2 or AAV9 prevented diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction, reduced cardiac apoptosis and preserved cardiac microvasculature and blood flow.

The research results suggest that NGF gene therapy might have a tremendous therapeutic potential for the treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy and encourage further translational efforts for the final benefit of diabetic patients.

However, before this gene therapy approach can be trialled in patients, additional pre-clinical studies need to be performed in order to verify not only the efficiency and the safety of AAVs-mediated NGF in type 1 diabetes, but also to find the most efficient AAV serotype, as well as the optimal dose and delivery route to be used.

You heard right -- Google itself has just affirmed on its own social networking branch that Android 4.0 will begin to hit GSM / UMTS (sorry, Sprint users!) Nexus S devices over the coming month, with the luckiest few to get it today. Outside of that, there's no more specific time table to be had, but if you're able to suck it down in the coming hours, definitely sound off on the improvements in comments below.

Update: Looks like the package is available to download and install (at your own risk, of course) for Nexus S, AWS version (T-Mobile compatible). Huzzah!

Typhoon hits Philippines killing nearly 180 (Reuters)

MANILA (Reuters) ? A typhoon hit the southern Philippines triggering flash floods and landslides that killed nearly 180 people and forced about 100,000 from their homes, government and army officials said Saturday.

Typhoon Washi, with winds gusting up to 90km/h (56 mph), hit the resource-rich island of Mindanao late Friday, bringing heavy rain that also grounded some domestic flights and left wide areas without power

Army spokesman Colonel Leopoldo Galon said emergency workers had recovered 97 bodies, most of them children, who drowned in floods in Cagayan de Oro City. Seventy-five people drowned in Iligan City.

The national disaster agency said five miners were also buried in a landslide.

"I can't explain how these things happened, entire villages were swept to the sea by flash floods," Galon told Reuters, saying the death toll could rise as hundreds of people were unaccounted for.

"I have not seen anything like this before. This could be worse than Ondoy," he said, referring to a 2009 storm that inundated the capital, Manila, killing hundreds of people.

Television images showed bodies covered in mud, cars piled on top of each other and wrecked homes. Helicopters and boats searched the sea for survivors and victims.

Rescue boats pulled at least 15 people from the sea, another army spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, told reporters.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz said many people were caught by surprise when water rose one meter (three feet) high in less than an hour, forcing people onto roofs.

"Most of them were already sleeping when floodwaters entered their homes," he said. "This is the worst flooding our city had experienced in years."

The national disaster agency said it could not estimate crop and property damage because emergency workers, including soldiers and police officers, were evacuating families and recovering casualties.

The social welfare department said about 100,000 people were displaced and brought to more than a dozen shelters in the two cities.

Six domestic flights of Cebu Pacific were cancelled due to the rain and near-zero visibility in the southern and central Philippines. Ferry services were also halted, stranding hundreds of people.

An average of 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year, often causing death and destruction.

Whitecaps acquire Nguyen in MLS weighted lottery

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:37 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired attacking midfielder Lee Nguyen through Major League Soccer's weighted lottery.

The 25-year-old from McKinney, Texas, signed a multi-year contract with MLS on Dec. 6. Nguyen was entered into the weighted lottery after he had turned down a MLS contract when he was drafted in college. He played a season of college soccer at Indiana before joining the Netherlands' PSV Eindhoven for the 2005-06 season.

The Whitecaps were one of six MLS clubs to participate in Thursday's draw for Nguyen. Vancouver was selected ahead of FC Dallas, the Houston Dynamo, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Each team's record dictates its probability of winning the draw.

Intel enters licensing deal with Inside Secure for NFC tech

Intel
Intel's NFC aspirations are hardly a secret. The company showed off a Medfield-powered tablet at IDF sporting the tech and it's partnered with MasterCard -- promising to bring PayPass checkouts to Ultrabooks. Now Chipzilla is putting the final pieces of the equation in place by landing a licensing deal with Inside Secure. The company specializes in contactless payment systems and will be lending its Microread, Securead and Open NFC products to Intel for future chips. While it's a safe assumption that we'll be seeing NFC pop up in Ultrabooks, it's also going to be an essential ingredient if the Santa Clara crew ever hopes to make x86 a player in the smartphone scene. We've still got a while to go before near field communication becomes truly ubiquitous, but this is one more step in the right direction. Check out the PR after the break.

A spoonful of sugar helps your skin age prematurely

A SWEET tooth does more than pack on the pounds. It causes your skin to age prematurely, making you look older than you really are. But how much older?

A team led by Diana van Heemst at Leiden University in the Netherlands divided 569 healthy volunteers into three groups according to whether they had low, medium or high concentrations of blood glucose after a meal. They also studied 33 people with diabetes who had even higher blood glucose levels.

Sixty independent assessors were then asked to view pictures of the volunteers and rate how old each looked. The results show that high blood sugar levels made people look older, even when other factors affecting appearance were accounted for, such as actual age, smoking and a history of sunbathing.

The largest gap in perceived age was one year seven months, between the lowest glucose group and the diabetics, from an average of 59.6 years old to 61.2 years. But even among those without diabetes, there was a one-year gap between the lowest and highest glucose groups. Overall, there was a five-month hike in perceived age for every 0.18 gram increase in glucose per litre of blood (Age, DOI: 10.1007/s11357-011-9339-9).

"What's happening in the body is written in the face." says David Gunn of Unilever Research in Sharnbrook, UK, who co-led the project.

BYU basketball: Cougars join fight in children's cancer cause

Published: Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 11:42 p.m. MST

PROVO ? Coach Dave Rose and his wife Cheryl have been anxiously involved with the Children with Cancer Christmas Foundation (CCCF) since he first came to BYU as an assistant coach. It wasn't until 2009, when Rose faced his own battle with pancreatic cancer, that the event became intimately more relatable to each of them, however.

The CCCF is now in its 15th year and has grown exponentially since its humble beginnings when several people banded together with the idea to do what they could for not only children afflicted with cancer but for their families. The foundation currently holds a two-night event that involves dinner, presents, Santa Claus, Cosmo and the BYU basketball team among other things.

"The BYU players and the coaches ? they're sort of the highlight for these kids and their family," said foundation founder and cancer survivor Mac Boyter. "It's a great blessing to have them involved."

BYU basketball's involvement came about almost immediately after the idea of the CCCF was first hatched. Then BYU coach Steve Cleveland came to know about the foundation because of his involvement with Coaches versus Cancer.

Boyter said Cleveland and his wife just showed up along with then-assistant coach Rose and his wife to ask what they could do. What they immediately were able to do was to move the event to a bigger facility ? the Cougar Room at LaVell Edwards Stadium. It wasn't before long, however, that even the Cougar Room proved to be too small, leading to them expanding it into a two-night event held at the gymnasium housed by the Vivint building in North Provo.

While Rose was fully committed to the foundation and its mission, it was Cheryl who put in most of the work. Boyter, seeing her dedication to their mission, soon invited her to become a member of the foundation, which she readily accepted.

"She has been absolutely fantastic," said Boyter. "She's given her whole body and soul to it, so frankly, where we are today and how we've grown ? a lot of it is her fault."

"I just show up and talk about everything she does, but she's the one doing everything," added Rose. "That's kind of how it works."

Several years after Cheryl became a foundation member, it was learned that her husband had been diagnosed with cancer. Rose said his own experience in dealing with first the diagnosis and then the treatment, and how it affected not only himself but his family, gave him a new perspective.
