The truth about Amazon's jobs

amazon warehouse

Amazon is adding 5,000 warehouse jobs.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

So how do Amazon's new jobs really stack up?

The online retail giant announced Monday that 5,000 of those new jobs will be warehouse positions that pay 30% more than traditional retail store jobs.

On the face of it, the comparison is accurate. Dig a little deeper and there's nothing special about Amazon's (AMZN, Fortune 500) claim.

Elizabeth Brennan, a spokeswoman for Warehouse Workers United, a workers advocacy group, said pitting warehouse worker salaries against regular retail jobs is comparing apples against oranges.

The average U.S. warehouse worker, at Amazon or anywhere else, earns a third more than a retail worker. The median hourly wage of a warehouse worker is $13.50, or about 30% more than the average U.S. retail worker's pay of $10.09, according to the Department of Labor.

Amazon wouldn't say how much it pays its workers. But according to data gathered by career website Glassdoor.com, Amazon pays its 20,000 warehouse workers an average hourly wage of about $12, which is below the national average.

Spokeswoman Mary Osako said Glassdoor's numbers are closer to wages for entry-level workers.

She added that the figure also doesn't represent the Amazon worker's entire compensation. Its employees get full benefits and stock awards on top of their salaries. In the past five years, this has added an average of 9% to workers' base pay annually, Osako said.

Amazon also offers to pre-pay up to 95% of tuition for courses for its workers, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

Amazon's fiercest competitor, Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), said it pays its warehouse workers an average of $19 per hour, with benefits. This average includes entry level workers to managers.

What does all this add up to?

The average warehouse worker at Wal-Mart makes just under $40,000 annually, while at Amazon would take home about $24,300 a year. That's less than $1,000 above the official federal poverty line for a family of four.

Related: Obama's jobs record: Where are we now?

Using this data as a guide, both Amazon and Wal-Mart pay their warehouse workers more than smaller, independent distribution centers. According to a study conducted by University of Southern California professor Juan D. De Lara, the average warehouse worker in the region made $16,000 per year.

De Lara said many warehouse workers don't work full-time, which is why he found their average annual income to be less than half of the $30,000 figure quoted by the Labor department.

Dolphins name themselves

They also answer to those chosen ?names?

To call a dolphin, just whistle a squeaky shout-out.

Bottlenose dolphins answer to high-pitched bursts of sound. But each animal responds to only one specific trill. That trill is called its ?signature whistle,? explain Stephanie King and Vincent Janik of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Xbox One for SMBs: Is Microsoft dreaming?

Former Xbox head Don Mattrick shows of the Xbox One. Credit: Microsoft

Former Xbox head Don Mattrick shows of the Xbox One. Credit: Microsoft

A gambit by Microsoft to sell the upcoming Xbox One to businesses appears unlikely to fly with most organisations, according to multiple industry analysts.

Earlier this month, a Microsoft director blogged that the Xbox One should entice small businesses when the next-gen gaming console is released before Christmas.

?The Xbox One, priced at $499, is an affordable option for small business owners, as there are many features built into the console that could help it rival even the most modest of video conferencing and networking platforms,? wrote Marques Lyons, director of the Microsoft consumer camp.

Lyons pointed specifically at the device?s abilities to do 1080p HD videoconferencing through Skype and access data in the cloud using SkyDrive. He also noted the console?s support for Wi-Fi Direct, allowing for streaming of presentations to the TV, as well as gesture-control capabilities from the Kinect camera.

However, analysts contacted by Techworld Australia predicted only limited success for Xbox in the workplace.

Gartner analyst Geoff Johnson said Microsoft may have the best chance selling Xbox One to the ?tiniest? of small businesses, composed of two to five employees.

In a spin on bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and the consumerisation of IT, small businesses that work out of their homes may end up using the Xbox because it?s already in the house, he said. ?You might as well use it for the business as well.?

?The trick is going to be to rip it away from the kids long enough.?

However, Ovum analyst Richard Absalom said he doesn?t see much appeal for businesses of any size to buy the Xbox One.

?The kind of teleconferencing facilities available through Xbox One / Kinect would also be available on a PC,? Absalom said. ?Attaching the console to a big screen might offer something like a cheap presence room, but we don?t think this is a high priority for SMBs, so it?s hard to see what the business case for buying one would be.?

?I?m sure there will be lots of clever ways that people find to use Kinect, but just using an Xbox for teleconferencing doesn?t seem like the best use of money for SMBs,? he added.

The trick is going to be to rip it away from the kids long enough.

Gartner analyst Geoff Johnson

Telsyte analyst Rodney Gedda agreed that there may not be a compelling reason for a business to buy the Xbox One over another unified communications device.

?The real question is, does the Xbox do anything that?s that compelling compared to other devices?? the analyst asked.

?You can get Skype on it, but you can get Skype on pretty much any device.?

Still, Gedda noted that the price of Xbox One?$499 in the US and $599 in Australia?could be attractive to budget-minded small businesses looking to buy a videoconferencing system, which typically run much higher.

?The fact that the Xbox has unified communications capabilities could make it like a glorified videoconferencing or messaging system, and that is very applicable to businesses,? he said.

All three analysts admitted that the motion-sensing Kinect technology could bring something unique to the system, assuming businesses can find a use for it.

Ovum sees ?niche opportunities for using Kinect, for example in operating theatres in hospitals where a surgeon can use gestures to navigate through scans, patient records, etc., instead of needing to leave the theatre, find what they?re looking for, and scrub up again,? said Absalom.

Kinect could have uses for fields of science and research, said Gedda. ?If Xbox can commoditise that, it might be a good opportunity.?

?The area that?s going to drag it through is the gesture control, voice navigation and related presentation videoconferencing stuff,? said Johnson. However, he said it?s ?hard to imagine? many business apps being developed for the console.

The analysts noted that the Xbox?s historical focus on video gaming could turn off some businesses, analysts said.

When Johnson first heard Microsoft?s comments about using Xbox in the workplace, the analyst laughed, he said. Johnson explained that he used to joke with clients, ?My favourite organisation runs on Xbox.?

There may also be a fear the Xbox will be more of a distraction than a business tool, said Gedda. ?If you put this gaming device in someone?s hands, they will use it for non-work purposes as well as work purposes.?

Then again, that might not be a problem for every organisation, he said. ?Businesses look at gamification and downtime for employees pretty seriously as well.?

Drone gender gap: More women worldwide opposed to strikes than men?

drones

Drones and gender chart

Pew Research Institute

There's a significant global gender gap when it comes to the United States' use of drones for military strikes, with more women around the world opposing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles than men.

While women in general are "far less likely than men to say that force is sometimes necessary in the pursuit of justice," the "gender difference over drone strikes is unusually large," says the Pew Research Institute in a new report.

In the U.S., of 61 percent of Americans who approve of drone strikes in military situations, 70 percent are men and 53 percent are women, Pew found.

But the gender gap is even greater in other countries "about this signature Obama administration anti-terrorist tool," wrote Bruce Stokes, Pew's director of global economic attitudes, in the report:

In Japan, for example, 41 percent of men approve of drone attacks, compared with just 10 percent of women. Double digit gender gaps are also found in six of the eight EU nations polled, as well as Australia, Canada, the U.S., South Korea and Uganda.

The Obama administration says it uses military drones to target al Qaeda leaders and senior Taliban officials who are plotting attacks against the U.S. and U.S. troops. But a recent NBC News investigation found that in Pakistan, the CIA didn't always know who it was targeting in using the drones.

Last spring, Pew surveyed people in 39 nations about the U.S. use of drone missile strikes in countries like Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. The only three countries where "majorities" support the drone use are Israel, Kenya and the U.S. itself, Pew found.

In France, Germany and Spain, "there are also sharp ideological divisions on this issue, with those on the political right far more supportive than those on the left."

Greenville County jail officials said the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested early Friday. He was also charged with not having a driver's license.

This was not Simmons first run in with the law.

Simmons was arrested last year in nearby Spartanburg County for suspicion of driving without a license. In that case, he was released after paying a fine.

Jail records show Simmons has been released. It wasn't clear if he has an attorney.

Simmons was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph. He admitted to speeding but not going as fast as the Arizona police said. He sued the Arizona police.

In March 2000, DMX was arrested in Cheektowaga, New York. He pled guilty to a reduced charge of driving without a license, and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and fined $400. DMX served another jail sentence in 2001 for driving without a license and possession of marijuana. In 2008. DMX pled guilty to charges of drug possession, theft, and animal cruelty. He was sentenced to ninety days in jail on January 31, 2009. In 2010, DMX turned himself in to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Court for a reckless driving charge, he received in 2002. He was sentenced to serve ninety days in jail.

Fundraising a fully free fork of Android

The Free Software Foundation is fundraising for Replicant, its fully free and open version of the Android operating system, in which all the restrictively licensed elements have been replaced with functionally equivalent components made from free software. I've just donated -- I love the idea of fully free OSes; they are frequently the best of breed, and even when they lag, they represent huge competitive pressure on proprietary and semi-proprietary vendors to be more free and open.

While most of Android is already free software, device manufacturers distribute the OS with some key nonfree parts. Those parts are in the layer of Android that communicates with the phone or tablet hardware, such as the WiFi and Bluetooth chips. In addition, every commonly available Android device comes pre-loaded with a variety of proprietary applications running on top of the operating system. Replicant seeks to provide all of the same functionality using only free software.

Users of Replicant have a full suite of free software mobile-optimized applications at their fingertips through F-Droid, Replicant's default app repository. F-Droid isn't just for Replicant -- it works on all Android-based systems, and the FSF recommends it as a replacement for Google Play store.

Mobile operating systems distributed by Apple, Microsoft, and Google all require you to use proprietary software. Even one such program in a phone's application space is enough to threaten our freedom and security -- it only takes one open backdoor to gain access. We are proud to support the Replicant project to help users escape the proprietary restrictions imposed by the current major smartphone vendors. There will still be problems remaining to solve, like the proprietary radio firmware and the common practice of locking down phones, but Replicant is a major part of the solution.

Donate to Replicant and support free software on mobile devices (via /.)

AllSaints Film celebrates the London heat wave by creating its latest project, Sun City

London, United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 25 July 2013

AllSaints Film has used the recent record temperatures in London as the backdrop for its seductive and subversive new release, Sun City. A provocative tale of displacement and individuality, the short film was entirely devised, shot and edited in just two long hot days in the capital last week. By confronting the clich?s and conventions of swimwear advertising, Sun City demonstrates AllSaints? spirit for creative disruption.

?Once again, exclusive filmed content proves to be a modern and exciting medium with which to quickly and nimbly communicate the spirit and attitude of AllSaints,? comments the brand?s Creative Director, Wil Beedle. ?We had the initial idea of Sun City last Wednesday when the temperature was hitting 32 degrees, but since London weather is notoriously unpredictable, we gave ourselves the challenge of shooting and sharing it within a week. Let's hope it staves off the rain.?

In keeping with AllSaints? desire to communicate directly with its ever-growing global community and beyond, Sun City will be launched on July 24th on http://www.allsaints.com, across the brand?s digital platforms, including http://www.youtube.com/allsaintsfilm, and vimeo.com/allsaintsfilm, and is poised to become one of the summer?s viral must-sees.

Around-the-clock physical screenings will take place at Earlham Street; the longest-running AllSaints retail location, now operating as an experimental hub in which to explore the many facets of the AllSaints brand. For Sun City Earlham will be subject to a suitably subversive transformation, including the arrival of several tonnes of black sand, shipped directly from Iceland?s remote Vik Beach.

Launched in April this year, AllSaints Film is committed to expressing the diverse elements of the brand and its digital community. From music, style and street documentaries to cutting edge film installation, AllSaints Film produces exclusive content, collaborating with both established names and dynamic young talent. Previous releases include New Music City, a ten-minute documentary about Nashville?s burgeoning music scene, focusing on Kings of Leon?s independent record label, Serpents and Snakes.

Anthony Weiner and the Forever Scandal

Surprise! Anthony Weiner, the New York City mayoral candidate,?confirmed reports on Tuesday that he is the man behind a new series of lewd pictures and texts allegedly?sent to a woman last year and released this week by The Dirty. According to The Dirty, the messages were exchanged sometime around last August. In a press conference Tuesday night, Weiner said that "some of these things happened before my [Congressional] resignation, some of them happened after." The woman who received the messages claims she was promised, among other things, help in obtaining a job at Politico.?The best, least-explicit fact: When he sent pictures of his genitals over Yahoo!, Weiner used the alias "Carlos Danger."?

At the Tuesday night press conference, Weiner said that while there is "no question that what I did is wrong" that "this behavior is behind me." He apologized to anyone "who has been on the recieving end of these messages" but that "in many ways, things are not much more different than they were yesterday." Weiner insisted that his online relationships and encounters are "entirely behind me," and that his wife "knew all along" about the most recent revelation, and that after his resignation he "told her everything."

The most shocking and emotional moment of the presser came when Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, spoke for the first time publically at a news conference on Weiner's scandals. Admitting to being "very nervous," she said:

When we faced this publicly two years ago, it was the beginning of a time in our marriage that was very difficult?our marriage, like many others, has had its ups and its downs. It took a lot of work, and a whole lot of therapy to get to a place where I could forgive Anthony. It was not an easy choice, in any way. But I made the decision that it was worth staying in this marriage. That was a decision I made for me, for our son, and for our family. I didn't know how it would work out. But I did know that I wanted to give it a try.

....

?

I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him. And as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward.

None of this should be surprising news. Back in April, when Weiner first announced his candidacy for mayor, he?specifically said that there could be more photos and messages out there. And he said that it's possible that another person may come forward. On Tuesday, Weiner referenced those statements in his new apology:

I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have. As I have said in the past, these things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress. While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me. I've apologized to Huma and am grateful that she has worked through these issues with me and for her forgiveness. I want to again say that I am very sorry to anyone who was on the receiving end of these messages and the disruption that this has caused. As my wife and I have said, we are focused on moving forward.

And at his press conference, he seemed relatively surprised that it took this long for new photos and messages to come out.

So really, we had a good idea that this was coming. And it isn't so out of the ordinary for a guy who resigned from Congress over similar issues just two years ago. Despite this, Anthony Weiner has still been doing well in recent polls. Quinnipiac had him up against City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, 25 percent to 22 percent last week. And he was only slightly down against Quinn among women, 23 percent to 21 percent. Overall, right now polls look to be pretty neck-and-neck. It remains to be seen, of course, whether the latest revelations will have any impact.

But the most truly unique thing about this scandal is just how incredibly long-running it is. Sending pictures of your genitals to strangers over the Internet doesn't lend itself to the scale or scope of Watergate. But it's playing out over a similar timeframe, with the new revelations coming two years after Weiner resigned from Congress.

Why is this, exactly? Blame the Internet. In an age where more and more of our lives?both the cheery and the dark?exists online, it shouldn't be surprising to see a politician caught up in a web of Internet muck. And there's every reason to expect this to keep happening. Right now, it's the kids of politicians who have largely been getting into political trouble (See: Jeff Flake). But once those kids, and that generation, starts running for office and winning in larger numbers, it's safe to assume we'll be seeing more Anthony Weiner-type scandals.?

Weiner isn't even the only member of Congress to recently be brought down by the Internet. New York's Chris Lee resigned in 2011 after a posting of him posing on Craigslist was uncovered by Gawker. And it's not quite implausible to think that if Chris Lee suddenly reemerged in political life, he could be haunted by as-yet-unleaked postings from his past. That's the obvious nature of the Internet that is only just now becoming a fact of political life: What goes online, stays online. Forever.

And don't think for a second that Weiner is the only person who has ever held elected office who has thought that calling himself a pseudonym like "Carlos Danger" online would be a good idea.

Exclusive: Ford to build current and new F-150 pickups at same time

By Deepa Seetharaman

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co will produce both its current F-150 pickup and a new model for about six months to avoid disrupting sales of the top-selling U.S. vehicle and safeguard against potential kinks tied to the truck's extensive overhaul, people familiar with the plans said.

The second-largest U.S. automaker aims to start production of the new truck around July 2014, sources said. Ford will continue to build the older model for the first six months of the new F-150's launch.

The automaker took more time to prepare its factories to build newer truck models in 2003 and 2008, according to Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson. Ford was able to revamp its plants at a more "leisurely" place in 2008, when high fuel prices sapped demand for larger, gas-guzzling models.

But planning for the upcoming F-150 comes as U.S. demand for trucks is quickly growing, stoked by strength in the housing and oil industries. Ford cannot afford any disruption to production at a time when U.S. sales of full-size pickups are increasing at almost three times the pace of the overall industry.

"In order to ramp up, you have to retool...and that means you have to take capacity offline," IHS Automotive analyst Mike Jackson said. "To do that, at a period of time when demand is so strong, makes it a bit challenging."

Ford, which reports second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, declined to comment. The F-series trucks and SUV derivatives such as the Expedition account for more than 90 percent of Ford's global profit, according to Morgan Stanley.

Ford builds the F-150 in Kansas City, Missouri and Dearborn, Michigan. The Dearborn truck factory was partially shut down during the last week of June to allow for some "facility work" for the new F-150, according to a May plant newsletter.

At the Detroit auto show this year, Ford showed a truck concept dubbed the Atlas that hinted at a bolder, lighter design. Sources have previously said Ford is looking to cut at least 700 pounds from its F-150 truck.

Ford's overhaul of the F-150 includes relying on more aluminum and lightweight materials to meet future fuel economy standards. Ford already uses aluminum in the hood of its current F-150, but the new truck will use it more extensively.

Aluminum is about one-third the weight of conventional steel, but different factory equipment is required to manipulate the material.

"You wouldn't want to do both plants simultaneously because if there is a glitch, you don't want that cutting off supply of all trucks," Johnson said.

It is unusual, but not unprecedented, for automakers to build older models alongside the new ones, especially when it comes to top-sellers.

Ford is allocating more time than General Motors Co to change over to the new model, Johnson said. GM built the old and new versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups for about two months this year, a GM spokeswoman said.

Deutsche Bank set to trim balance sheet by 20 percent: FT

(Reuters) - Germany's biggest lender, Deutsche Bank , is expected to announce during its second-quarter results its plans to reach a minimum 3 percent overall equity to loans ratio in the next two and a half years, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing people briefed on the plans.

The bank is set to cut its balance sheet by 20 percent to 1 trillion euros ($1.31 trillion) by the end of 2015 to comply with tougher rules that are expected to require banks to use more equity capital to fund their business, to make them more robust in the aftermath of the 2007-09 credit meltdown, the newspaper said. (http://link.reuters.com/qeq79t)

The plans, which are expected to have a very small impact on earnings, include new regulatory rules for the accounting of derivatives, reducing the bank's cash pile of 240 billion euros and cutting down its 90-billion euro assets in its non-core unit, the report added.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the matter.

In January, Deutsche Bank announced one-off charges of almost $4 billion to adjust the valuations of risky assets in an attempt to shrink its balance sheet.

It had warned then that litigation costs and its moves to trim costs and reduce balance sheet risks could hit earnings for the remainder of this year.

Deutsche Bank is also considering issuing at least 6 billion euros in hybrid equity capital such as convertible bonds after clarification from the German banking regulator on which instruments will be recognized under a new global capital regime for banks, the Financial Times said.

The lender's estimated ratio of equity to assets stood at 2.1 percent as of March 31, the second-lowest of 18 banks ranked by Morgan Stanley analysts, the newspaper said.

Banks complain equity is the most expensive way to fund their business, but it is the safest from a taxpayer's or a regulator's perspective. That is because shareholders are the first to lose their money in case of bankruptcy.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521dn

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521dn ($899.99 direct) is a quietly impressive beast. Designed as a mono laser workhorse, with a 75,000 page per month maximum duty cycle and a 6,000 page per month recommended maximum, it can print and fax from, as well as scan to, a computer, including over a network, and it can work as a standalone copier, fax machine, and direct email sender. More important, it does well enough at everything it does to make it Editors' Choice for medium to heavy-duty use in a small to mid-size office or workgroup.

There's nothing flashy here, like super-fast speed. In fact, it's easy to find printers, like the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8950DW or the far less expensive Canon imageClass MF4770n that are faster. On the other hand, the M521dn offers a combination of features that make it more usable than most MFPs.

MFP Features and Basics
In addition to the basic MFP features I've already mentioned?printing, scanning, copying, faxing, and email?the M521dn can both scan to and print from a USB memory key. In an unusual touch for a monochrome printer, it will even let you preview the photos stored on the memory key before printing them. It also supports printing though the cloud.

Much higher on its list of key features is its scan capability. Like most MFPs aimed at office use, the M521dn supplements a flatbed scanner with an automatic document feeder (ADF). As is common, the flatbed is limited to letter-size paper while the 50-page ADF lets you scan up to legal size. Unlike most of the competition, however, including some significantly more expensive MFPs like the Editors' Choice Dell B3465dnf Multifunction Laser Printer, the M521dn offers a duplex scanner for copying and scanning. (It won't scan in duplex for faxing, however, which takes a little of the shine off the feature.)

Having a duplex scanner (meaning that it can scan both sides of a page at the same time) is different from having a duplexing ADF, which scans one side, turns the page over, and then scans the other. Either approach will let you scan duplex documents. And if the MFP also offers duplex printing plus appropriate copying commands, as with the M521dn, either approach will also let you copy single- or double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies. However, scanning in duplex is a lot faster than scanning with a duplexing ADF.

We don't usually time duplex scanning with MFPs, because most desktop MFPs that duplex use duplexing ADFs, which is more of a convenience feature than something that's truly competitive with duplexing scanners. With the M521dn, however, I ran a test using a 25-sheet document just to get a sense of its speed. For scanning to disk, and including the time for saving the file to disk after scanning, the M521dn came in at 10.7 pages per minute (ppm) or 21.4 images per minute (ipm), with one image on each side of the page. If you scan duplex documents very often, this one feature can save a lot of time compared with using an MFP with a duplexing ADF.

Very much on the plus side for the M521dn is the 3.5-inch touch screen, with its particularly well-designed menu system. The combination makes it easy to both change settings in the printer and give commands for copying, faxing, and emailing.

One other strong point is the paper handing for printing, with both a 500-sheet paper drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose tray standard, along with the automatic duplexer. The 600-sheet capacity should be enough for most small to mid-size offices. If you need more, however, you can add a second 500-sheet drawer ($185 street), for a total of 1,100 sheets.

Setup and Speed
At 20.0 by 18.3 by 18.3 inches (HWD), the M521dn is too imposing to share a desk with. It's also heavy enough, at 52.7 pounds, that you'll probably want some help moving it. Once in place, however, setup is standard fare. For my tests I connected it to a wired network and installed the driver on a system running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521dn

As I've already suggested, speed is not a strong point. HP rates the engine at 42 ppm, and I timed it as being a touch faster, at 43 ppm, for printing a text document with little to no formatting from Microsoft Word. On our business applications suite, however (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), it came in at a surprisingly slow 5.3 ppm. Although that's a tolerable speed, it's significantly slower than most other mono laser printers we've tested. The Brother MFC-8950DW, for example, managed 10.6 ppm, the Canon imageClass MF4770n came in at 12.3 ppm, and the Dell B3465dnf hit 15.0 ppm

Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality is a mixed bag. The good news is that the M521dn handled text in our tests particularly well, which is generally the most important kind of output for a mono printer. Text quality was well above par, making it easily good enough for any business use and even good enough for most desktop publishing applications.

Graphics output was a touch below par, but still within the tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. That makes it good enough for any internal business need. Depending on how critical an eye you have, you may or may not consider it acceptable for, say, PowerPoint handouts. Photo quality was also at the low end of par for a mono laser MFP. It was certainly good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages. Whether you consider it suitable for anything more than that will depend, once again, on how critical an eye you have.

The one feature I wish this printer had that it doesn't is the ability to fax in duplex. However, if you don't need to fax duplex documents, that won't be an issue. It also doesn't leave you any worse off for faxing than with an MFP that can't handle duplexing at all, making this oversight more of a missed opportunity than an actual problem.

Faster print speed would be welcome also. However, the time saved with duplex scanning and copying if you need it can more than make up for whatever points the printer loses on print speed. The text quality is a big plus too, as part of a highly attractive balance of speed, output quality, paper handling, and MFP features. For a small to mid-size office that needs to copy or scan (but not fax) duplex documents on a regular basis, all this can make the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521dn a near-perfect fit, which is also enough to make it an Editors' Choice.

China's yuan reform 'brave', next targets: land, monopoly, tax - Xinhua

SHANGHAI | Sun Jul 21, 2013 10:19am BST

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's moves to liberalise its currency have been courageous given the economic risks, and next areas for reform include land policy, state-owned industries and taxation, the official Xinhua news service said in a commentary published on Sunday.

The news agency criticised Western politicians who have accused China of keeping its currency artificially low for ignoring the intricacy of the issue even while manipulating their own currencies.

"Tens of thousands of low-end manufacturers operating at a low profit margin have had to take a significant loss over a stronger RMB yuan," Xinhua said in the commentary, using the initials for renminbi, the official name of the currency.

"The world is awash with easy money from the United States and Japan, which seeks higher returns from emerging economies, including China. Hot money flows in and out of China could paralyse the country's macroeconomic policy tools."

China has had to balance the benefits from a freer currency, including curbing inflation and speculative flows, against the risk of severe economic shock such reforms could bring, it said.

"To allow more flexibility for China's yuan is easier said than done."

The commentary highlighted the recent decision by the People's Bank of China to scrap the floor on lending rates, announced on Friday, as one in a sequence of steps to continue to reform the way credit is allocated and risk priced in the world's second-largest economy.

"China's financial reform cannot be done overnight; yet it has no way back."

While financial reform was critical, it must be accompanied by reforms in other areas of the economy, including "land, state monopoly, and fiscal policies", Xinhua said.

Finance Minister Lou Jiwei was quoted in a Xinhua interview published late on Saturday saying that China is looking to business tax reform and the easing of paperwork requirements to help stimulate growth and sustain profitability.

Syrian government, opposition must work to expel "terrorists": Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a new call on Monday for the Syrian government and opposition to work together to expel all "terrorists and extremists from Syria", Russian news agencies reported.

At the start of talks with Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Qadri Jamil, Lavrov was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency that last month's agreement in Northern Ireland for the two sides to work together to expel the "terrorists and extremists" should "become one of the main points of the proposed international (peace) conference".

"To our regret, unlike the government of Syria, a significant part of the opposition, including the National Council, has not expressed such readiness yet."

Obama asks 'soul searching' after Martin shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Grappling with the Trayvon Martin case in the most personal of terms, President Barack Obama said Friday it's time for Americans to search their souls on race and look for ways to move forward after the shooting and trial in Florida.

The nation's first black president, who early on had said that if he had a son the boy would have looked like Martin, made the connection even more intense, saying that "Trayvon Martin could've been me 35 years ago."

"Where do we take this?" Obama wondered aloud during an unscheduled appearance in the White House briefing room. "How do we learn some lessons from this and move in a positive direction?"

The president said it may be time to take a hard look at "stand your ground" self-defense laws, questioning whether they contribute "to the kind of peace and security and order that we'd like to see."

His appearance marked his first extended comments on the Martin case since neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman was acquitted last weekend of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in Martin's death last year. Jurors found that Zimmerman was acting in self-defense when he shot the unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Obama said that as people process the verdict, it's important to put the angry reaction of many African-Americans into context.

Protests and demonstrations, he said, are understandable, adding that "some of that stuff is just going to have to work its way through ? as long as it remains nonviolent."

"It's important to recognize that the African-American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn't go away," he said.

The president said that distrust shadows African-American men: They sometimes are closely followed when they shop at department stores; they can draw nervous stares on elevators and hear car locks clicking when they walk down the street ? experiences that he said he personally felt before becoming a well-known figure.

"It's inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear," he said.

Obama said black Americans recognize a history of racial disparities in how laws are applied on the death penalty and involving drug cases, but he also said the African-American community was not "naive about the fact that African-American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system, that they're disproportionately both victims and perpetrators of violence."

The president said it's time "for all of us to do some soul searching," though he said it's generally not productive when politicians try to orchestrate a national conversation that ends up being stilted and politicized.

He added that conversations within families and at churches and workplaces, where people may be more honest, could help people to ask themselves, "Am I wringing as much bias out of myself as I can?"

Overall, Obama said, race relations in the United States actually are getting better. Citing his own daughters and their interactions with friends, the president said, "They're better than we are. They're better than we were."

The president declined to wade into the detail of legal questions about the Florida case, saying, "Once the jury's spoken, that's how our system works."

But he said state and local laws, such as Florida's "stand your ground" statute, need a close look.

Obama said it would be useful "to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of confrontation" that led to Martin's death. He questioned whether a law that sends the message that someone who is armed "has the right to use those firearms even if there is a way for them to exit from a situation" really promotes peace and security.

And he raised the question of whether Martin himself, if he had been armed and of age, "could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk" and shot Zimmerman if he felt threatened when being followed.

Obama also said the country needs to look at ways to improve local law enforcement through better training and resources, and needs to look for ways to "bolster and reinforce" African-American boys.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has said the Justice Department has an open investigation into the case. The department is looking into whether Zimmerman violated Martin's civil rights.

Israel's Netanyahu says peace talks will be tough

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister says he expects recently announced peace talks with the Palestinians to be tough, and that any agreement reached would have to be ratified in a national Israeli referendum.

Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Sunday at his weekly Cabinet meeting, his first on-camera remarks since U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced the resumption of peace talks over the weekend ? ending a five year deadlock.

Netanyahu said his main guiding principles will be to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel and to avoid a future Palestinian state becoming an Iranian-backed "terror state."

Final status negotiations aim to reach a deal on the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including borders, the fate of Palestinian refugees and security arrangements. The Palestinians say talks will be based on Israel's pre-1967 borders.

GOLF: Tiger Woods just a stroke behind Miguel Angel Jimenez at British Open

By Paul Newberry The Associated Press

Posted: ? 07/19/2013 11:15:06 PM PDT

Updated: ? 07/19/2013 11:25:51 PM PDT

Gullane, Scotland >> Tiger Woods plodded along most of the day. He lipped out a putt from 2 feet. He settled for a bunch of pars.

Then, with his final stroke, he looked like the Tiger of old.

Woods rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on Muirfield's tough closing hole Friday, raising his putter toward the blue sky with a flourish, fully aware he was positioned again to break the longest major drought of his career.

Fun-loving Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez turned in another solid round, an even-par 71 that left him with a one-shot edge in the clubhouse. Right on his heels were Woods, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson, with a bunch of other guys including first-round leader Zach Johnson scrambling near the top of the leaderboard with holes still to play.

"It will be a fun weekend," Wood said. "This golf course is going to be difficult."

He finished with a 71 that looked pretty good given the perilous, rock-hard setup. Woods endured a stretch of 12 holes without a birdie before stealing one at the 18th.

"I was kind of fighting it," he said.

Everyone was.

Par was a good score, as Jimenez showed. The 49-year-old had a couple of birdies, a pair of bogeys and a whole bunch of pars.

class="TXBody"> "I'm playing very solid," he said. "In these conditions, it's not easy. With these pin positions, it's very, very tough to get in close."

Not that Jimenez is getting too worked up about it.

The cigar-smoking, wine-loving golfer nicknamed "The Mechanic" is perhaps best known outside Europe for his unique stretching routine before each round. He'll put his knees together and gyrate his hips in a rather ridiculous-looking motion especially for a guy with a hefty belly and even heftier ponytail then pull out a couple of clubs to help work his legs and arms, though none of it looks very strenuous.

But, as silly as he looks, this guy is all business on the course. He's already bounced back from missing four months recovering from a broken right leg sustained in a skiing accident. If he can keep it going through the weekend, he might take a run at Julius Boros, the oldest major champion in golf history when he won the PGA Championship at age 48.

"Why not?" Jimenez said. "There's two more rounds to go. You never know what's going to happen. I'm just going to have fun on the golf course. When I finish here, I'll have a glass of red wine later on. I'm just going to keep doing the same thing."

Lee Westwood was one of the few players to put up a score in the 60s, but even he was staggering a bit by the end. After a brilliant front nine he carded five birdies the 40-year-old Englishman bogeyed three of the last six holes to finish with a 68.

Still, he joined Woods and Stenson just one stroke behind Jimenez's 3-under 139 total. The last English golfer to win the British Open was Nick Faldo in 1992.

Westwood was solidly positioned to break that streak and pick up his first major title.

"Why not enjoy it out there?" Westwood said. "It's tough for everybody. So smile your way through."

Woods is trying to break a drought of his own. He's 0-for-16 at majors since the 2008 U.S. Open, and missed four others during that stretch recovering from injuries.

Whoever wins this one will have to earn it. While the weather has been unseasonably warm and dry, the fearsome wind more of a gentle breeze, there weren't many chances for going low. Not on a tabletop of a course that is more brown than green, with pin conditions that some players complained were downright unfair.

As expected, the conditions toughened in the afternoon as the bright sun firmed up the greens even more. Johnson surrendered the lead with bogeys on four of the first eight holes. Phil Mickelson drove into a bunker at the second and took a double-bogey. Brandt Snedeker doubled the 10th. Rafael Cabrera-Bello did the same at the 14th on the way to a 74.

In a true British Open moment, Dustin Johnson found himself hitting sideways out of the sand, intentionally aiming for the knee-high grass in the rough, after he drove up against the face of a pot bunker. Even so, he was still right in the thick of things.

Two-time major Angel Cabrera made the turn a 4 under, another big-time performance from a golfer who rarely does anything special unless there's something special on the line. The burly Argentinian has won the U.S. Open and the Masters, and the nearly won another green jacket this past spring before losing to Adam Scott in a playoff.

Mark O'Meara, the 1998 Open champion, opened with a surprising 67 that left him one stroke behind Zach Johnson. But the course bit back Friday, sending the 56-year-old plunging out of contention. He lost his ball at No. 6, leading to a double-bogey, and stumbled to the finish with a 78.

"It's pretty simple: If you don't hit it good in an Open championship with the rough the way it is out there, you're going to make some bogeys," O'Meara said. "The short game is key."

O'Meara wasn't the only old-timer to fall back. Fifty-four-year-old Tom Lehman followed a 68 Thursday with a 77 less than 24 hours later.

The young weren't spared, either.

Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old who last weekend became the PGA Tour's youngest winner since 1931, made only two bogeys through his first 32 holes and was 3 under. Then came a double-bogey at the 15th, back-to-back bogeys at the next two holes, and a missed chance at No. 18.

And the youngster found himself at 1-over 143.

Darren Clarke, the surprise Open champion in 2011 but mostly an afterthought since then, had no trouble making birdies on the front side. He rolled in four of them. Unfortunately for him, all that good work was wiped out by one bad hole a quadruple-bogey 8 at the sixth. He finished with a 71 and also was at 143.

Johnson had not been atop the leaderboard at any major since he rallied to win the Masters six years ago.

Opera SDK to be the basis of TCL's upcoming line of Smart TVs

It looks like China's TCL isn't just working with Google to grace its line of flat-screen TVs. The TV maker has just announced that its next line of Smart TVs will be powered by yet another well-known web brand -- Opera. Indeed, TCL's E5691, E5510, F3250 and F3500 series of HDTVs will be built on top of Opera's devices SDK for Linux-based devices, and will feature Opera's TV browser and TV Store. Aside from apps and the usual online entertainment options, Opera's TV platform also seeks to offer an enhanced TV experience, so that you can check your Twitter stream while watching your favorite episode of Game of Thrones, for example. Other features of the new line of TCL sets include 3D viewing, multi-screen interaction and the ability to use your phone as a remote control. They're slated to debut in Australia, Europe and Latin America later this year for a yet to be determined price, with no word on their North American presence. This is not the first time Opera has entered the Smart TV space, but TCL's adoption does lend additional legitimacy to the company's silver screen venture.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Microsoft Corp.'s foray into the tablet computer market proved costly in the fourth quarter. The world's largest software company booked a $900 million write-down to account for the deep price cut it applied to its Surface RT tablet this week, a move to spur sales amid sluggish demand.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant cut the Surface RT's price to $349. The $150-per-device cut contributed to fourth quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street forecasts, but even without the charge, earnings would have missed expectations.

Microsoft also saw revenue from its flagship Windows operating system decline 6 percent after excluding the late recognition of revenue from last year when it offered discounted upgrades to users of older systems.

The reception to its latest operating system, Windows 8, has been poor and the results reflected that. Analysts believe the new operating system is contributing to the longest slump in personal computer sales.

Microsoft shares fell 3.5 percent to $34.19 in after-hours trading after the results came out.

Despite weakness in key areas, revenue and profitability improved in Microsoft's other lines of business, including enterprise software, servers and tools, the Xbox video game division and the Bing search unit.

Net income in the April-June quarter came to $4.97 billion, or 59 cents per share, reversing a loss of $492 million a year ago when it wrote down almost the entire value of its 2007 purchase of online ad service aQuantive.

Excluding the Surface charge, earnings were 66 cents per share, short of the 75 cents per share expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue grew 10 percent to $19.90 billion, also below the $20.72 million expected.

U.S. suggests Egyptian military averted civil war

Egypt avoided a possible civil war this month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday, making it hard for Washington to conclude that the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi was a military coup, Reuters reported.

The armed forces deposed the elected leader on July 3 after huge street protests against his rule, clearing the way for the installment this week of a new interim cabinet charged with restoring civilian government and reviving the troubled economy.

Thousands of Mursi's supporters demonstrated outside the prime minister's office and marched through Cairo on Wednesday to denounce the military-backed administration and show that they had no intention of bowing to army dictates.

Crisis in Egypt, which straddles the vital Suez Canal, has alarmed allies in the West. Washington would be forced to cut off aid to Cairo, including some $1.3 billion that goes to the military, if it determined Mursi had been removed by a coup.

"On the issue of a coup, this is obviously an extremely complex and very difficult situation," Kerry told reporters during a visit to Jordan, where he held talks with Arab officials, adding that Washington would not "rush to judgment."

"What complicates it, obviously, is that you had (an) extraordinary situation in Egypt of life and death, of the potential of civil war and enormous violence, and you now have a constitutional process proceeding forward very rapidly."

His comments underscored grave U.S. concerns about the Arab world's most populous state and suggested that President Barack Obama was in no hurry to pull the plug on the aid program.

Israel Allows 2 Egyptian Battalions into Sinai

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-0...litant-attacks

As the death count rises - last night's actions in Alexandria and Cairo appear to be more escalations by the pro-Mursi supporters - AFP reports that Israel has given Egypt the go-ahead to deploy two battalions to the Sinai to tackle militants in the sensitive region where deployments are restricted by treaty. The Egyptian army is preparing to go on the offensive against Islamist militants in the Sinai who have escalated attacks since the 'coup' on July 3. Over the past two weeks, militants have launched almost daily attacks on troops and police in the peninsula, killing several members of the security forces and two Egyptian Christians. A senior Egyptian military official confirmed that the army "will carry out an operation" in the Sinai, without giving further details...

CAIRO ? The Egyptian general who announced that President Mohammed Morsi had been removed from office was named the country?s first deputy prime minister on Tuesday, a sign that the military, despite asserting it had no interest in governing, intended to maintain its influence.

The title is the third one bestowed on Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who will maintain his portfolios as defense minister and head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. If that were not enough to delineate his influence on events here, a photo of the new 34-member Cabinet did. El-Sissi is front and center, to the left of Transitional President Adly Mansour, who el-Sissi appointed. The country?s new prime minister is on Mansour?s right.

Newly named Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, who was appointed last week as the country?s vice president for foreign affairs and is considered the voice of the country?s liberal movement, was not in the photo, reportedly because the vice president is not technically a member of the prime minister?s government.

The nation is deeply divided between a majority that supports the military overthrow of Morsi and backers of Morsi, who demand that he be reinstated. An overnight clash between Morsi supporters marching toward downtown Cairo from the Rabaa district where they?ve gathered for the past two weeks left seven people dead and at least 261 injured, according to the Ministry of Health.

Reports indicated that the Morsi supporters not only fought security forces but were attacked by nearby residents as well.

El-Sissi?s appointment as the deputy to Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi, 76, is likely to keep alive discussion of whether the July 3 action against Morsi was a coup d?etat and undercut the military?s repeated assertion that it would not take part in politics. El-Sissi is now the fifth general in the new government. Earlier, Mansour named three generals to his administration ? the chief of staff, the head of intelligence and the head of security. Lt. Gen. Reda Hafez was sworn in Tuesday as minister of military production.

Since Morsi?s ouster, hundreds of members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been arrested, including the group?s supreme leader, Mohammed Badie, and dozens of others are being sought. The military closed down television news stations that were sympathetic to the Brotherhood, and 10 days ago, more than 50 pro-Morsi protesters were killed in clashes with the military and police under circumstances that remain unclear.

Analysts noted that el-Sissi?s new title came without portfolio, suggesting that his influence will be as great or as little as he wishes.

?Believe me, the title doesn?t matter,? one official close to the new government, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic, told McClatchy. ?He is already influential.?

In Washington, where the Obama administration has avoided calling Morsi?s ouster a coup, White House spokesman Jay Carney decline to address el-Sissi?s appointment directly. But he expressed concern about recent developments.

?Not everything that we?ve seen in the last two weeks demonstrates progress toward reconciliation,? Carney said, adding that ?anything that moves Egypt away from reconciliation and towards further polarization is an unfavorable development, and that includes some of the violence we?ve seen as well as some of the arbitrary arrests and detentions that we?ve seen.?

He said the U.S. has ?made that view clear to the Egyptian authorities ? the existing transitional government included.?

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns remained in Cairo for the second day of a two-day visit. On Tuesday, State Department officials said that Burns had spoken to someone from the Muslim Brotherhood, but they would not say to whom or for how long they spoke or about what. A face-to-face meeting did not happen, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters, because of logistics. He did not elaborate.

El-Sissi?s new posting was one of many surprises in the new Cabinet. Rather than sweep the decks clear of all those who served during Morsi?s one year in office, the transitional government retained some of Morsi?s ministers, though none of those kept were affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. Nor was there any member of the conservative Islamist Nour party in the new Cabinet. There were however, three Christians named to it.

Some of the appointments were arranged hastily. Khaled Abd el Aziz, the newly named minister of youth who?d held the same position during the 18 months between the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak and Morsi?s inauguration, told McClatchy that Prime Minister Beblawi called him Tuesday morning to asking him to rejoin the government. He said he accepted the post by noon. He was sworn in at 3 p.m.

Osama Saleh, Morsi?s minister of investment, retained his post, as did Morsi?s minister of tourism, Hisham Zazou, who tried twice to resign in Morsi?s final days.

Mohammed Ibrahim, who oversaw an Interior Ministry whose police forces refused in the end to defend Morsi, will remain interior minister. Ahmed Galal, an economist and World Bank expert, was named minister of finance.

Three women were among the new Cabinet members ? the minister of health, the minister of environment and the minister of information. But Mansour has vowed to eventually shut down the Ministry of Information, as Egyptians see it as a tool of government propaganda.
