97% The Act Of Killing

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (75) | Rotten (2)

A horrifying yet mesmerizing work, "The Act of Killing" instructively meanders at times as in a Werner Herzog film.

Better characters could hardly have been invented.

What Oppenheimer is after is a parallel story, a glimpse into the minds of men who can recount mass killings and think "Those were the days."

"The Act of Killing" works on so many levels -- psychodrama, horror movie, Orwellian nightmare, Poe story -- that sifting through your reactions could take days.

I can't be more direct. "The Act of Killing" is one of the most extraordinary films you'll ever encounter, not to mention one of the craziest filmmaking concepts anywhere, and that includes the whole Bollywood thing.

There is no sense of remorse in these men for what they did to so many innocent people and that...is chilling.

Watching these crazy loons make a movie about their crimes against humanity may not be the most pleasant way to spend an evening. But you can't deny that it's utterly fascinating.

Directors Joshua Oppenheimer and Christine Cynn have created something extraordinary in The Act of Killing, the much-talked-about documentary about torture and murder during the Indonesian dictatorship of the '60s and '70s.

This riveting documentary about political mass murder in Indonesia incorporates the killers' own movie fantasies about their massacres and deepens our understanding of the fascist brain.

It's a tough watch, but it's not like anything you've ever seen.

Anwar Congo may be the scariest person you'll see on screen this year.

If director Joshua Oppenheimer occasionally loses his way in his own narrative, where this picture demands attention is in its chilling portrait of indoctrination and evil.

It's a gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting look at impunity that resonates far beyond its obscure central conflict.

A cynically exploitative film made in the name of human rights, which it has about as much to do with as the Punked show on MTV.

Pacino movie films in middle of concert by Chicago

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An Al Pacino movie broke out in the middle of a concert by the band Chicago, with thousands of fans serving as extras.

Cameras were wheeled onstage during intermission of the group's show at the Greek Theatre on Friday night to film a scene from Pacino's upcoming movie "Imagine," in which he plays aging rock star Danny Collins.

With coaching from the director, the crowd chanted the name of Pacino's character as the 73-year-old actor walked on stage to sing "Hey Baby Doll" in a black suit. The movie co-stars Michael Caine, Annette Bening and Jennifer Garner.

"This is an improvisation," Pacino told the crowd. "You just came in and got it. That's not easy."

Chicago's band members remained on stage to watch and clap along during the 25-minute filming. After a few takes, the crowd grew restless and there was scattered booing for the real musicians to resume playing.

Earlier in Chicago's set, Joe Mantegna of CBS' "Criminal Minds" joined his hometown band to sing "If You Leave Me Now."

Pacino returned to the stage during Chicago's encore and sang and danced to their hit "25 or 6 to 4."

"For a shy guy from the South Bronx, this has been great," Pacino said.

Minor League Baseball Player Strikes Out On One Pitch

Vinnie Catricala of the Midland RockHounds accomplished a rare and stupid feat, striking out on one pitch during a game on Thursday.

Credit umpire Ron Teague for the K. Here's how it went down: Catricala took the first pitch he saw from Corpus Christi Hooks pitcher Nick Tropeano, and Teague called it a strike. Catricala was unhappy with the call, and stepped out of the batter's box. Teague felt that Catricala was taking his sweet-ass time, and called a second strike. That's a rule, apparently, although it's rarely enforced.

Either Catricala didn't notice or didn't care, because he was still chilling outside the batter's box. A little over nine seconds later, Teague rung Catricala out, Catricala argued, and Teague ejected him. Then the scoreboard played some famous movie clips, and everybody laughed, while Catricala stomped away and presumably asked himself what he did in life to deserve this.

If you look at it in a different light, though, Tropeano earned the easiest strikeout of his career. Nice job, Nick!

Death and the Moon | 10,000 Hours

As I was driving home from the gym, a little tired and a little sweaty, I saw the most beautiful moon. It sat on the shoulder of Mt. Hood, glowing its usual pale yellow in a pink hazy sky, but it was huge. I think it is what people call a harvest moon. I don?t really know, and even though I have the internet at my fingertips I don?t really feel like looking it up.

It seems more romantic to say, ?Harvest moon.?

I was listening absent-mindedly to NPR. ?A play was on?one of those one acts. It was a scene between a mother and a son. They were in Rome on vacation, and the mother was uninhibited. All she could talk about were her orgasmic dreams and how she thought the guy at the bar had deliciously large hands. I wasn?t listening that close to begin with, I was paying more attention to that moon. But slowly their conversation threw a lasso around my ears. It turns out that mom was dying of cancer, and her son had given her this vacation.

Pretty soon I was crying.

Son was explaining that he had planned this trip to show her all she had to fight for?to give her hope for the future. But then she started explaining that she wanted to die in room. She was sick of the experimental drugs and the false medical hope. ?She was so gentle as she explained that all the hope she could ever want was in dying exactly the way she wanted. In Rome with her son, drinking aperitif and ogling men with big hands.

I have been thinking a lot about death lately. I am a Hospice volunteer. I only have one patient at a time, and I meet with them once a week until they die and then I get a new patient. That sounds a little callous, but it is anything but. Then for the Portland Book Review I was given a book that traces the evolution of the medical industry and the resulting approach we as a society have towards those who are dying. ?Then there are personal experiences with aging family members, and of course the play that I just listened to.

It got me thinking about cancer, and the big questions: What If? What if?

Would I want to fight till I am a sack of bones in a bed in a hospital? Would I take the odds at face value and go live as hard as I can until I can?t anymore? I don?t know. But?The Inevitable Hour: A History of Caring for Dying Patients in America?by Emily K Abel, drove the point home that while medicine has become adept at postponing death, it hasn?t concurred it and as such maybe dying needn?t be something sterile and unpleasant. Maybe it can be something at home, something simpler, with family.

But that is simplifying things a bit. It was just an errant train of thought. Just something to think about. Maybe it was the moon that pulled all the separate?thoughts together: Hospice, books, family, plays about cancer. Ever see Moonstruck? Moons have power. Just look at it:

MPAA Recruits ?Internet Analyst? to Spy on Social Networks and Forums

In its ongoing war against online piracy, the MPAA is currently recruiting new soldiers. One of the open positions that caught our eye recently is that of an ?Internet Analyst,? tasked with manipulating media files and monitoring social networks, communities and forums. For those still in school the MPAA also has a job opening for an unpaid summer intern to assist with various ?content protection? projects.

mpaaWith roughly 200 employees the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is a thorn in the side of Internet pirates all over the world.

The group has been credited as the main instigator of the Megaupload shutdown and is on a crusade to do the same to BitTorrent search engine isoHunt and file-hosting service Hotfile.

While the MPAA has scored several successes in the past, the war against online piracy is far from over. Every day new threats arise and keeping an eye on the latest developments is a day job, quite literally.

The movie industry group is currently recruiting fresh blood and has several open positions. The one of ?Internet Analyst? stood out to us the most, as it reveals a bit more about what the MPAA is up to behind the scenes.

The position of Internet Analyst is a crucial one in the MPAA organization. The person hired for the job will work under the supervision of Senior Vice President Content Protection Internet Marc Miller, and will be tasked with spotting and analyzing the latest piracy trends.

This also includes a bit of online spying on social media and other online communities. One of the key responsibilities in this position, according to the job offering, is to ?monitor and report on Internet based social networks, communities and forums.?

In addition the new recruit will have to research how much harm piracy is doing to the movie industry. Or as the job offer puts it, to ?analyze how and at what rate illegal online delivery systems cannibalize legitimate business models.?

mpaa-job

To make an accurate assessment of the effects of online piracy, the new recruit will also have to work with major movie studio members, vendors and industry partners to gather and analyze data regarding unauthorized downloads via cyberlockers, BitTorrent and other protocols.

Finally, it is worth noting that the position also requires a particular skill set. Aside from browsing the Internet the analyst should also be able to ?manipulate online media files,? whatever that may entail.

The MPAA stresses that prospective employees should have a bachelor degree in business, economics, computer science or engineering, digital media production, or the equivalent. No details about the expected salary are provided.

The Internet Analyst position is just one of the many open jobs the MPAA has to offer. There are career opportunities for a wide range of people, including those who are still in school.

The MPAA just added the 2013 summer internship, a 30-hour a week job without compensation, but with valuable educational training. A summer internship at the MPAA, who wouldn?t want that?

Should any eligible TorrentFreak readers apply for these exciting positions, please stay in touch afterwards to share your experiences in the world?s most prestigious anti-piracy offices.

Hassan Rouhani becomes new Iranian president

REUTERS

DUBAI: Moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani took office as Iran's president on Saturday, succeeding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei endorsed him, Iranian media said.

Rouhani's resounding election win in June raised hopes of a negotiated end to the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme. That would avert a possible new war in the Middle East.

Khamenei kissed Rouhani on the cheek and the new president kissed the leader on his lapel.

The start of Rouhani's presidency puts an end to Ahmadinejad's eight years in office during which Iran grew more isolated and came under wide-ranging United Nations, U.S. and European Union sanctions over its nuclear programme, putting enormous pressure on the economy.

Rouhani faces huge challenges, including combating inflation he put last month at 42 percent, bringing down high unemployment and bridging the political divisions between conservative, moderate and reformist factions.

His most immediate test is persuading parliament to approve his candidates for cabinet positions, which he is expected to introduce on Sunday after he takes the oath of office.

"Rouhani will certainly appoint more competent men and women to key economic ministries and institutions. He will also follow saner economic policies," said Shaul Bakhash, an Iran historian at George Mason University in Virginia.

"But the economic problems are staggering ... Above all, without a serious easing of sanctions, it is difficult to see how Rouhani can get the economy moving again."

Jennifer Aniston gets wedding advice from future mother-in-law

Justin Theroux?s mom hopes the pair will wed on East Coast

Jennifer Aniston's future mother-in-law has reportedly stepped in to get her wedding plans back on track.

The actress' plans to marry her fianc? Justin Theroux have apparently been put on hold. It has been claimed that the pair's hectic work schedules and contrasting views about where to set up home have put a strain on their relationship. According to reports, Justin's mother Phyllis decided to intervene in bid to help them resolve their issues. The former journalist is said to have taken Jennifer and Justin to the restaurant where the handsome actor proposed last year.

"Phyllis was trying to get them to recapture that feeling," a source explained to British magazine Grazia.

Justin is said to be ?miserable? living in California and wants to relocate to his native New York City, while Jennifer is eager to settle in Los Angeles.

RELATED: Jennifer Aniston hires wedding planner

Phyllis is believed to be keen for the pair to at least tie the knot near Justin's home city, and Jennifer has been considering the prospect. The actress has a close bond with Justin's mom and is taking her advice seriously.

"Phyllis, like her son, is keen for Jen and Justin to get married on the East Coast instead of having a big blowout Hollywood bash. Justin says he hopes that Phyllis has more clout with Jen than he does," the source added. "Jennifer is slowing coming round to the idea of marrying in New York. Living there, however, is another matter for now."

Jennifer recently spoke about the delay to her wedding. She denied claims the nuptials had been called off, revealing the pair are happy to take their time.

"We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job," Jennifer said. "And, you know, we already feel married."

Crew Stadium books easy sellout for U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier

Crew Stadium will host its eighth men's World Cup qualifier soccer match next month, when the U.S. plays Mexico.

Crew Stadium will have a full house for the U.S.-Mexico men?s World Cup qualifier match Sept. 10, and U.S. Soccer could have sold a lot more tickets above the stadium?s 24,000-seat capacity.

The soccer federation declared the match a general sellout Friday, saying it received more than twice as many ticket requests than could be accommodated.

A limited number of VIP packages with premium seats remain, U.S. Soccer said. For information, about them call 312-528-1255 or send an e-mail to supporters@ussoccer.org.

This will be the eighth time Crew Stadium has hosted a World Cup men?s qualifier. As I?ve reported, the stadium has been a lucky charm for the U.S. team, which has five wins and two draws in its seven World Cup matches there.

U.S. Soccer also disclosed its headquarters for the World Cup qualifier will be at Easton Town Center, starting Sept. 6. In addition, the federation will host a rally for the team and fans the night before the match at the Bluestone, an entertainment venue off East Broad Street in downtown Columbus.

Akron and Canton two cities located in Ohio have the best and the top concrete leveling companies. These offer top notched services with a guaranteed off between 50 to 75 percent when compared to replacement or tearing down services. Unlike the traditional replacement methodconcrete leveling in Akroncorrects the lowered slab by altering the foundation that the surface sits on making it a cheaper alternative for small businesses and private homes.

Several advantages other than the save in money can also be quoted for both concrete leveling inAkron and Canton. These include a great save in time. This means that unlike the replacement and tear down services concrete leveling can be completed within hours and the same corrected slab can be used on the same day of the repair. Concrete leveling at Canton also helps in maintaining a uniform slab colour. Reductions in energy utilization end environmental problems are some of the other advantages.

To raise the concrete slabs a portable pump and hose equipment is used which pumps the slab to rise up to its original level under a hydraulic pressure. This pressure is created using a mixture of crushed limestone and water that is pumped into a small hole drilled into the respective slab. Once the slurry is filled within the void under the slab it raises back to its original position. This void may occur due many natural reasons including soil erosion.

This technology that has been available for the public to use for over 50 years is mostly not aware by the general public. But once one uses it they will most likely say that it is the best and most neat method. But like everything concrete leveling also has its disadvantages. Although limited and few, it does require a quick mentioning. Concrete once raised to a level cannot be lowered. Sometimes the limestone slurry that is filled in the void can shrink which in turn causes a small lowering of the slab up to half an inch. Another major disadvantage is that concrete leveling works are seasonal works that is only done from April to October due to the freezing conditions during other months. But special discounts are given to customers who book in advance

All concrete leveling at Canton and Akron offer a warranty for their work. This ranges from 1 year to 5years along with their guaranteed off of from 50 to 75 percent when compared with replacement works. They also make sure the work is done accurately and carefully and by the best equipment?s available.
