Sandy Grounds Thousands of Flights but Analysts ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook

Thousands of airline flights to and from the east coast of the United States have been grounded as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which threatens to be one of the worst ever to hit the East Coast.

JetBlue Airways, which has a major hub at Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, has canceled more than 1,000 flights from Sunday through Wednesday, and United Airlines, with a major hub in Newark, New Jersey, has grounded 3,700 flights, or about 16% of those scheduled, during that same period.

American Airlines and its commuter line American Eagle have canceled over 1,500 flights from Sunday night until midday Wednesday and says there may be additional delays and cancellations depending on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Customers whose flights were canceled but bought their tickets before October 27 won't be charged extra if they reschedule to travel no later than Nov. 7.

Delta and all other airlines with flights scheduled to depart or leave airports along the East Coast have also canceled flights.

Analysts don't expect the storm to have a lasting impact on airlines, however, fourth quarter earnings could feel a pinch.

"We do not expect the storm to have a sustained impact on earnings, through there is likely to be a shortfall from current 4Q12 estimates," Raymond Kames analyst Savanthi Syth writes in her report today.

"The airlines are well prepared?.They've moved their assets out of harm's way," says Ray Neidl, senior equity analyst at Maxim Group.

Neidl says those moves, flying planes to airports out of the storm's path, will be the biggest storm-induced cost for the airlines.

Additionally, losses could be limited due to the fact that the storm is coming at a "soft time" in the season.

Mateo Lleras, manager of corporate communications at JetBlue, says the airline is not yet in a position to discuss the financial impact of the storm but tells The Daily Ticker "it's worth noting that while planes don't make money on the ground, they don't cost money, either?we save on fuel and other operating costs."

If customers want to change or cancel flights, JetBlue is waving fees for travel to and from cities in the mid-Atlantic and northwest that are impacted by the storm.

According to Syth, JetBlue is among the airlines most affected by the storm, followed by United, Delta, US Airways and American. She estimates the storm could cost JetBlue $25 million pre-tax. More than 80% of its flights are along the East Coast Corridor from Washington, D.C. to Rhode Island?compared to about 48% for US Airways and between 22-28% for other major airlines. She estimates Delta will lose $45 million pre-tax.

Overall Syth says the airline industry is now much better prepared to weather big storms because they're "very disciplined about managing capacity?.They're not going after market share for the sake of market share, but add only flights that make economic sense."

The full impact of Hurricane Sandy on the airlines won't be known for days.

"If the worst of the storm is by Tuesday and things start to recover Wednesday, then planes could be operational by the weekend," says Neidl.

Stay tuned.

Pressed leaves: storage, education, and crafting

By julia

I own a couple pressed leaf bookmarks from a dear friend ? she included a Bible verse about friendship on the flip side. A nice reminder of our times together, and of the season. I made my own bookmarks recently. Without a Bible verse. I?m not a heathen, if you?re wondering.

I always have pressed flowers and leaves. If I open any book, large or small, I?ll probably find a leaf or flower between the pages. Cookbooks, the dictionary, a reference book, the phone book. I ?own a leaf press, but it only holds a few leaves of a certain size. And if the flower is juicy, I have to replace the paper.

While the best storage for my pressed leaves and flowers is in the press, I do have other storage ? envelopes. I try to group like specimens in the same envelope.

Here are my bookmarks:

pressed leaves

?a good book is always in season?

I imitated the naturalists in our area by using contact paper to preserve my leaves (autumn or not) instead of laminating as my friend did. The leaves will stay beautiful indefinitely, and the paper is acid-free. Place mats would be a similar, large format project if you have say, sycamore leaves. OK, that?s borderline ridiculous in size, but a mature maple?s leaf would work well.

I love saving the temporary, all-too-quick-to-disappear nature of autumn leaves. Leaf crumbs are annoying, so?sandwiching in contact paper is good for me.

Size does matter in sexual selection, at least among beetles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A new collaborative project among researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden and the University of Cincinnati has, for the first time, demonstrated experimentally the evolutionary force behind the rapid evolution of male genitals, focusing on a species of seed beetle.

This mechanism is revealed in a study published October 25 in the scientific journal Current Biology. The experiments leading to this paper involved a species of seed beetle known as Callosobruchus maculatus. Mating among these beetles involves several males engaging in copulation with individual females.

"When a female mates with several males, the males compete over the fertilization of her eggs," said Michal Polak, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Cincinnati, one of the co-authors. "Because females mate with multiple males, the function of the male copulatory organ may determine which of the males will fertilize most of her eggs. Our results show that the morphology of the male genitalia affects his fertilization success in these beetles."

The competition to produce offspring is the driving force of evolution. Competition among males occurring after insemination may be an important evolutionary force that has led to the evolution of a diversity of shapes and sizes of male sexual organs, the co-authors assert. This competition among males has generated a great biological diversity that they believe can directly contribute to the formation of new species.

"The reproductive organs of animals with internal fertilization change more rapidly than all other morphological features during evolution," Polak said. "In virtually all groups of animals, from roundworms and molluscs to reptiles and mammals, the male sex organs differ markedly among even closely related species, with female genital traits remaining relatively unchanged."

To experimentally investigate the role of genital shape in reproductive success, the Swedish researchers -- Cosima Hotzy, Goran Arnqvist and Johanna L. Ronn -- bred male beetles with extraordinarily long genital spines. They simultaneously bred male beetles with extremely small spines. Experiments demonstrated that the males with long spines produced substantially more offspring.

"It is possible, however, that breeding for long spines introduced a secondary trait that affects fertility," Polak said. Unintended consequences, he said, are well known to animal breeders.

To prove that it was the spines and not some other trait, some beetles had their genital spines surgically modified using micro-scale laser surgery. Polak's laboratory has gained an international reputation for using a precision laser system to make microscopic changes to insect bodies.

Insects modified through both methods were then observed throughout the competitive mating process. The international team found that the longer genital spines directly contributed to successful fertilization. Seminal fluid from the males was also tracked through high-resolution radioisotope labels, and shown to enter the female body more quickly after mating with long-spined males than short-spined males.

"This provides experimental evidence that male genital morphology influences success in postcopulatory reproductive competition," Polak said.

There is more work to be done, Polak said, to understand the mechanism at work here. It is possible that these longer spines help introduce bio-active molecules from seminal fluid into the female circulatory system. These added proteins and peptides, which have yet to be characterized, may create effects within the female that contribute to male reproductive success. It is also possible that genital spines exert mechanical effects within the female by stimulating her reproductive tract during copulation, thereby inducing the female to uptake and use more of her current mate's sperm.

The study was funded by the European Research Council, the Swedish Research Council, and the National Science Foundation.

Internet Retailing ? Sportsdirect.com strengthens online ...

Home ? News, Operations

Sportsdirect.com has moved to strengthen its online infrastructure in the face of growing customer interest in the channel.

The multichannel sports equipment retailer says that its online business has grown quickly in the last year, helped by the Olympic Games.

?Sportsdirect.com?s online business is an important, rapidly growing retail channel for our company, increasing 83% over the past year,? said Jay Lyford, IT manager of Sportsdirect.com.

?The Olympic Games have created a tremendous spike in interest for sports and sporting goods, generating a surge in demand for our brands online.?

Currently its network of websites, which includes sites for its USC, Lillywhites, Field & Trek and Dunlop brands as well as Sportsdirect.com, sees more than 436,000 peak daily visitors, and 7.7m page views a day. But the increase in traffic over the last year challenged its existing platform, and the company has now moved to a standardised content management system from DotNetNuke in response. It will be developed and integrated by Cantarus, who will also train staff.

?We needed to strengthen our online infrastructure to better handle the volume of traffic and transactions,? said Lyford. ?DotNetNuke?s Web Development Framework and CMS was chosen because it easily integrates with our existing systems, allows us to redeploy sites quickly, and enables us to scale to meet growing demand.?

Bob Cortale, senior vice president, sales and customer care at DotNetNuke said: ?At DotNetNuke we measure the calibre of the company we are by the company we keep and we are thrilled to add Sportsdirect.com to the growing number of global organisations standardising on the DotNetNuke platform.?

Estranged wife of suspected Wisconsin spa gunman among dead

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The estranged wife of the suspected gunman in a shooting rampage at a Milwaukee-area spa was among the three women killed, officials said on Monday.

Those killed in the Sunday morning shooting included Zina Haughton, 42, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, who worked at the spa and was suspect Radcliffe Haughton's wife, officials said.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Azana Salon and Spa in suburban Brookfield hours after the shooting.

The other women killed were Cary Robuck, 35, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Maelyn M. Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, according to the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's office. Four people were wounded.

Haughton had been placed under a restraining order and directed to surrender his firearms to authorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involving his wife.

On October 8, the same date he was ordered to stay away from his wife after police said he slashed the tires on her car, Haughton posted to his Facebook page: "Need to get out of Wisconsin, HELP ..."

The next day, he issued a second plea: "can anyone help me get out of Wisconsin?"

That was the last posting to his page, which lists his marital status as "divorced."

An earlier posting, from October 3, the day before he is alleged to have slashed his wife's tires, said simply: "Shooting birds..."

"We believe this incident was domestic violence-related," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus told a news conference on Sunday evening.

Haughton had a previous police record for domestic violence. He was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, described as domestic abuse, stemming from an incident on January 8, 2011. That charge was dismissed on June 15, 2011, records show.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said three of the four people wounded were in satisfactory condition, while one remained in critical condition. All four are women aged from 22 to 40.

The shooting was the second incident of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a fourth, his wife, before fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

The last few months have been marked by a string of mass shootings in the United States. On September 27, a disgruntled former employee killed six people and took his own life in a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company from which he had been fired.

In August, a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin claimed seven lives, including that of the gunman. In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 in a shooting rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Self-Publishing: The Most Important Thing You Need ... - E-junkie.info

First I want to say welcome to my little corner of the web here at E-junkie. As an E-junkie customer for a few years now, I?m thrilled to be a guest poster for them. In my posts here, you?ll find first-hand info on everything from self-publishing to SEO. Now, to today?s topic . . .

In today?s post, I?m going to provide some insight on how to write ebooks ? ebooks that sell. In 2011, I chronicled my quest to publish 50 ebooks in 12 months ? so I get a lot of questions about self-publishing.

Following, in my opinion, is the most important thing you need to know about how to write ebooks that sell.

Is There a Big Enough Audience for Your Ebook?

Before you write a word, you should do some research to determine if there?s a big enough audience for you to make enough sales for it to be worth your time. While this may seem obvious, you?d be amazed at how many writers get an idea and run with it before doing this upfront work.

But like in any business, (and that?s what ebook writing / self-publishing is ? a business), if there aren?t enough customers who will buy your product/service, you?re not going to make any money.

?So,? you may be thinking, ?how do I go about finding out if there?s a large enough audience for my ebook??

In a word ? SEO ?. . . aka search engine optimization.

What Is SEO and Why Every Ebook Author Needs to Know

SEO is all about how search engines work. It examines factors like what people search for when they go online and the actual words and phrases they type in to find stuff. FYI, these are known as keywords/keyword phrases. Website analysts (and website owners) use this info to do certain things to their website to make it pop up higher in search results so that web surfers land on their site.

If you don?t know what search engine optimization is, it?s critical that you learn at least the basics of it because self-publishing is an online business. And, you can?t talk about marketing an online business these days without talking about SEO.

Here?s a Quick Rundown of How to Use SEO to Find Out if Your Ebook Will Sell

I?m going to use an example from one of my niches ? SEO writing.?I've?written several ebooks on this topic. Here?s a ?quick-and-dirty? rundown of what you need to do before writing a word.

1) Do keyword research: Go to Google?s Keyword AdWord Tool. I typed in the keyword phrase ?SEO writing? (without quotation marks). As of this writing, that particular keyword phrase is searched for over 40,000 times globally (40,500 to be exact).

So I surmise that yes, there?s a big enough audience for an ebook on this topic. Now the next challenge is can I get my ebook / info about my ebook on the first three pages of Google. Why is this important? Read on.

2) Can you get on one of the first three pages of Google: Studies have proven that most web surfers don?t look past the first three pages of search results. Proof?

Seventy-four percent of consumers said they usually abandon search results if they can?t find desired information within the first three pages of SERPs, according to a survey from AYTM Market Research. . . . [And] Just 15 percent of respondents said they scan five pages of results, with 61 saying if they don?t find what they?re looking for they try a new keyword search. [Source: Brafton, Incorporated]
Once you write an ebook, the key to getting it on the first three pages of Google is to assess who?s already there ? and to see if you can bypass them in search results. One of the easy metrics I look at is page rank (PR). If a website has a PR rank of 4 or higher, then I know that it?s going to be pretty hard to outrank them (eg, get on one of the first three pages).

But, if there are three to five sites on the first page of Google that have page ranks of 3 or lower, then I know that I have a pretty good shot. Note: I always aim for the first page. Hence, I assess who?s on the first page of Google. It doesn?t always work ? at least not right away. But if there are ?weak-ranking sites/blogs? (ie, those with a PR of 3 or lower) and I keep at it, usually within 3-6 months I eventually land on the coveted first page.

Here?s a link that lets you quickly check the page rank of any site.

3. Start writing: In case you?re wondering what I do to get on the first page of Google, it?s article marketing, ie, writing SEO articles (and blog posts and press releases). I then distribute them far and wide on the web to, for example, article directories and free press release sites. I also write and distribute weekly newsletters, in addition to blogging consistently.

This works. Proof? Search results change all the time but as of this writing, if you go to Google and type in ?SEO writing,? you?ll find info written by me in two spots on the first page (position #1 and #6).

How to Write Ebooks that Sell: Conclusion

I tell everyone who asks me about self-publishing that writing an ebook is the easy part. Ebook marketing is where the real work comes in. It?s not hard; it?s just that there?s a lot to learn ? and it?s an ongoing process.

But I?m living proof that if you want to write and publish ebooks that sell ? it?s totally possible. In 2010 ? for the first time ever ? my ebook earnings surpassed what I made as a freelance writer (and I?ve been doing that since 1993).

I'll have a posting order made before we get things rolling, we may not get up to 11 or more though so no real reason to worry about that yet.

As for balance, this game will be strictly RP, and doesn't have to adhere to the rules quite as much as if we brought out the books and dice. If I find a character that I believe is OP or broken in any way I'll whip out the nerf-stick and beat it until everyone's happy.

The classes, every base class is up for grabs IF you can make it believable. Minotaur psions and pixie samurai will need an excellent backstory before I say yes. As for prestige, and multiclassing, as we progress through the storyline PM me about it and I'll try to squeeze in some NPC trainers... I'm pretty much open to everything at this point, there's a lot more freedom to be had since it's going to be strictly roleplay.

All that I ask is that the characters be believable.

Review: Airberlin Business Class

By David Armstrong

It takes 11 hours to fly nonstop from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Berlin?s Tegel Airport, and about 11 and a half hours to return to LAX against prevailing winds. That?s a long time to be airborne, so of course being comfortable counts.

Until it completes taking delivery of 18 Boeing 787-8s it has on order (and potentially five more, which it has optioned), Airberlin?s primary long-haul fleet type is the Airbus A330-200

?

Airberlin (IATA code AB) proved to be just the ticket when I flew in Business Class from Los Angeles to Berlin and back on a business trip in the first week of October.

It was my first trip on Airberlin. Founded in 1979 with hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf, it is the second-largest airline in Germany.

Airberlin ? the airline styles its name as airberlin ? made a very good first impression on this frequent flier in spite of the inconveniences of using woefully overcrowded Berlin-Tegel Airport (IATA code TXL).

Tegel is scheduled for demolition when the oft-delayed Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (IATA code BER) finally opens next to Sch?nefeld Airport, which will be shut down. The fourth and latest opening date is October 27, 2013.

This photograph shows a line-up of four of Airberlin?s Airbus A330s at one of its major hubs, either Berlin or Dusseldorf

?

Until then, Airberlin will have to make do with Tegel, in circumstances beyond its control. Among them are sharing a small, nondescript passenger lounge in Terminal B with oneworld partner British Airways, and using functional but no-frills Terminal C for some flights.

Airberlin will have a major presence at Berlin Brandenburg when it opens next year. In the meantime, some travelers might be tempted to book away from Airberlin, but that would be a mistake.

It is a well-run, passenger-friendly, forward-looking airline, known in Europe for affordable fares, though it does not bill itself as a low-cost carrier.

Airberlin flies to seven U.S. destinations: New York JFK, Chicago O?Hare (from March 2013), Fort Myers in Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, and, in summer, San Francisco.

Air Berlin began three-times weekly service between Berlin and Los Angeles on May 11, 2012, using Airbus A330-200s. The carrier?s inaugural Berlin-Los Angeles flight was met at Los Angeles International Airport with a traditional water-cannon salute from airport fire-department vehicles

?

Like everyone, I like creature comforts while flying on long-haul routes, and Airberlin is not short of those in the areas it controls directly: passenger seats, food and drink, in-flight entertainment, the quality of its fleet, interior cabin design.

Most important, though, is the caliber of staff, and here Airberlin excels. It showcased witty, personable and smart cabin crews on both my transatlantic flights.

Thanks mainly to the engaging, can-do attitude of staff, Airberlin plays a role vis-?-vis its major rival, Lufthansa, roughly analogous to the role Virgin Atlantic Airways plays vis-?-vis BA: that of a smaller, younger, rising airline taking on a much-larger, long-established ? and high-quality ? flag carrier.

(Editor?s note: Airberlin is, however, a much larger airline than is Virgin Atlantic Airways. In addition to Airberlin?s long-haul network, it has a major short-to-medium-haul network and a large fleet of single-aisle aircraft, whereas Virgin Atlantic has virtually no short-haul operations.)

The flight attendants on our reviewer?s long-haul flights in Business Class on Airberlin were witty, personable and smart

?

I wasn?t able to use Web check-in, as www.airberlin.com doesn?t allow online check-in for flights to and from the United States, but my airport check-in at LAX went smoothly. Business Class passengers can check-in two bags, each weighing up to 32 kilograms (70.5 pounds), free of charge.

My departing flight began in the Business Class lounge that Airberlin shares in LAX?s Tom Bradley International Terminal with oneworld partner Qantas Airways. The Aussie carrier operates one of the best passenger departure lounges I?ve seen in a U.S. airport.

Located past security and up several levels, the lounge is spacious, nicely lit and well-laid out in a linear fashion with each defined area dedicated to a different activity: eating, drinking, beavering away on a laptop, reading, watching TV, or sitting in a silent zone.

I was not traveling with a personal electronic device, so I especially appreciated that the Qantas/oneworld lounge offered no fewer than 19 free desktop PCs for the use of travelers.

In addition to large fleets of Airbus A320-family jets and Boeing 737NGs, Airberlin operates 13 Airbus A330-200 widebodies and two A330-300s. This photograph, taken at sunset, shows one of the carrier?s A330-200s landing

?

Airberlin flight AB 7023 took off on time. Glasses of complimentary champagne helped make take-off a jolly experience.

The two-class Airbus A330-200 had 20 Business Class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, giving the cabin a cozy feel. Four flight attendants worked the space, imparting a cared-for quality. There were an additional 279 seats in Economy Class.

Airberlin does not rank among the industry?s innovators in seat technology but my Business Class seat proved more than adequate. The leather seats are 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) wide, 181 centimeters (72 inches) long and recline 170 degrees, backed with a hard shell. Seat pitch is 137 centimeters (53.9 inches).

A wide metal arm separates passengers in window and aisle seats. A personal, high-resolution, 8.9-inch touch screen offering games, movies, TV, music and a map showing progress of the aircraft pops out of the armrest and slides back. The meal table folds out of the top of the armrest. There is also a power socket for laptops.

These are what the Business Class seats look like on Airberlin?s Airbus A330-200s

?

Dinner was served shortly after takeoff on my 5:45 p.m. flight. In addition to its regular wine list, Air Berlin offers a small selection of wines from the restaurant Sansibar on the German island of Sylt in the North Sea.

I sipped one, a 2011 Kaapzicht Anna White, a refreshing South African blend of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, from the Stellenbosch wine region in the Cape Winelands. The young wine went well with my green salad with grilled potatoes, mixed vegetables and wedges of hardboiled egg.

For an entr?e, I had well-done ? but not over-done ? beef brisket in peppercorn sauce, with potato noodles and roasted carrots. I matched that with a 2006 Vincola Requense Polacio Crianza, a robust red wine from Spain, adroitly blended from Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon.

After dining, I read for a time, then slipped on high-quality Air Berlin headphones and listened to a mix of old favorites ? Dylan, Springsteen, the Who, the Kinks? ?Village Green Preservation Society? ? and new favorites Lady Gaga and the powerhouse British soul-singer Joss Stone.

In its long-haul Business Class cabins, Air Berlin offers food and wines from the restaurant Sansibar on the German island of Sylt in the North Sea. The wine choices from Sansibar are in addition to the airline?s main wine list

?

There are some 200 hours of entertainment programming on board in Business Class. The monitor includes a USB port. I snoozed for an hour or so, though legroom when the seat reclined was not abundant, until our on-time arrival.

Eight days later, on my return flight, AB 7022, I noticed the little things, nearly all of them done right. I dug into the amenity kit for ear plugs and an eyeshade and dabbed on the L?Occitane lip balm and face cream. I slipped on the black, Asian-style slippers, so much more comfortable than thin airplane socks worn by themselves.

I admired the smart flight attendant uniforms ? black, with red belts for the men and red scarves for the women. I was asked four times on the long return journey if I wanted to nosh or imbibe. I didn?t but I appreciated the non-intrusive solicitude of the staff.

The uniforms of Airberlin?s flight crews and cabin attendants are smart and stylish

?

Just before touch-down, a flight attendant asked, ?Mr. Armstrong, do you have a connecting flight??

?I do,? I said.

?Here is a bottle of water for the flight,? he said.

Little things mean a lot.

Re: 2012 problems - Family Tree Maker software - Family History ...

I'm not quite "silver" yet, but being an engineer in a technology industry, I live by the saying "Back up, Back up & Back up again!"

At work I keep getting problems with a product we deal with where the server hard disk fails and we have to rebuild the server. It never ceases to amaze me how many of these "mission critical" servers are never backed up, and the customer has to spend hours reinputting.

Best thing is do as I do..... Buy a USB External hard disk, and regularly back up FTM to your laptop hard disk (the default setting), then back it up to your USB hard disk. Also export the tree as a Gedcom file to your USB hard disk. I also have a folder on the laptop that has all of the documents categorized by family, I copy that to the USB disk.

I do that about once a month, and recently I've started exporting the Change Log to a PDF file every time I sync, that gives an indication of what changes have been made.

It's not perfect - the USB drive can fail as well, or if your house catches fire or floods you could lose it all, but some people keep 2 USB disks and leave one at a family members for safe keeping.

Paragam, the City

In a realm of magic, war rages. Will the continent be consumed by strife, or will the people unite against the greater danger?

Paragam, the City

While other smaller cities exist in Id-Heren, in Spelheim, Paragam has monopolized the word. Scholars occasionally still use the traditional name, but not many Citians know it, and it is not uncommon for them to mistake Paragam as a Northern word for the Spelheim capital.

Architecture
When approaching the City from the outside, one can only see the pure-white Wall, with the Council Spire just barely topping it in height. The Wall surrounds the City with a circle of stone, created out of what appears to be seamless white marble. It is high enough that no man could possibly sling a scaling hook across its parapeted battlements. The Wall existed before the City grew to fill it.

To enter the city, one must pass through one of the heavily-guarded checkpoints at the base of the wall. Without proof of prior residence, any visitor is turned away. The sole exceptions to this are awakened countryside magicians, who must enter the City by law. Close family is allowed to come as well. The passageways through the Wall let in light through numerous murder-holes, and are narrow enough for two men to stand their ground against an army.

Though some overlap exists, the City has three distinct districts.

The Housing is where the commoners live and work. Most buildings here have a uniform look to them ? people live in row houses made out of red brick, and workshops and stores may only differ in the sign boards hanging from their walls. Small, magical aqueducts run through the middle of some of the streets, sometimes ending (or beginning) in fountains. They provide the people with water for drinking and washing, with enchantments keeping the water clean. The stone-paved streets are kept free from filth, but not to the extent as is done in the High.

The High is where the nobility makes its home, and it houses most schools and other institutes for higher education. The more affluent nobles may own multiple estates within the City. The mansions they build are often a competitive show of wealth ? wildly decorated, expensively furnished, and staffed by a small army of servants. Plant life is more common here, and some nobles maintain enchanted greenhouses. The High?s mechanical and magical defenses are always at odds with thieves from the Old.

The Old is the most ancient part of the City. The streets are filthy with human waste, and the buildings decayed in their antiquity. All manner of constructions exist here in close proximity: decayed, regal mansions go back-to-back with rat-infested shacks. Parents warn their children to stay away from the Old City. The impoverished and the criminal form gangs here, hiding from the Council?s constables.

In the very center of the City, a perfectly circular lake exists. The waters are clear and clean, and in summer, many Citians can be found swimming in these waters. Children dare each other to swim to the center, where a small patch of land holds the Council Spire. In actuality, the lake is not so much a lake as it is a gigantic moat. The Spire is an abnormally high tower made from the same marble as the City Wall, where supposedly, the Council gathers to govern the country. In the Old, a persistent superstition says that, when you can see the spire, the spire can see you.

People
The people living within the City have no particular ethnic differences with the people living outside of the Wall. However, the majority has never left the City, and possess a learned, yet limited world view. Many believe Northerners call themselves Northerners, for example.

Magicians wear no special clothes, though magicians-in-training at the academy wear robed uniforms. Out in the streets, mages can only be told apart by a ring they wear, set with a colored jewel that signifies their Domain. Magicians of both genders often have short hair, however. This isn?t a requirement ? it is simply common for magicians to, at some point in their education, catch on fire.

Government and politics
The City is governed by the Council, which is in charge of legislation, and keeps the law through its constables and military. It is made up of leaders of prominent noble houses. Council seats are passed on to an appropriate heir, or can be relinquished to another house, or even sold. Considerable competition and blackmail exists between houses to attain a seat on the Council.

It is virtually impossible for an outsider to gain entry into the City. The reverse is not true ? commoners and nobles are welcome to leave, but the former group may have difficulty getting back in once they?re out, depending on the admission guard?s humour. Bribing one?s way in is complicated by multiple checkpoints with randomized guards.

For a magician, the situation is the exact opposite. They are legally obligated to live in the City, unless given leave to live at the island academy off the western coast. City magicians may not pass the Wall without military escort to a battlefield. While magic is considered divine, magic users are said to be servants of the Maker, and therefore servants of the City. Those with useful Talents are worked hard, while those with less useful Talents are put to recharging enchantments set by other mages in the same magical Domain.

For a noble-born magician, it is possible to pay a fee and waive this duty. They may still not leave the City, however, and magicians have not been allowed to hold a Council seat since the Void Witch incident ? a gruesome event in the history of the City, in which a magician with strange magic murdered thousands in a few hours. Concealing one?s magic is considered high treason.

Religion
To the Council, the Church of the Maker is a tool before it is a power, and it does not occupy itself much with those living beyond the walls of the City. The Writ of the Maker, the holy scripture, has been actively simplified and tailored to the Council's needs. While blasphemous, someone within the Council has good reason to believe the City's origin had nothing divine in it.

The Writ states the Maker created the world, and the City as its focal point. Magic and the military superiority of Spelheim are considered proof of this. The Maker is said to be all-knowing, weighing sin and tallying prayer. Church services are every morning, and it is customary to go at least every other day. With the Veil gone, the Church has been rallying people under the banner of human superiority.

The Church of the Maker only has a single festivity: Starless Night, celebrated on the winter solstice. Magicians produce such fire spectacles in the sky over the City, the light completely blots out the stars.
