Microsoft Sold 800,000 Xbox Consoles on Black Friday

Microsoft announced a rather astounding Black Friday sales result for its aging Xbox 360 game console.

The company said it sold more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday, more than 800,000 sold within a period of 24 hours, and more than 750,000 Kinect devices.

Granted Microsoft refreshed the Xbox 360 with the Kinect sensor in 2010, but this is an essentially seven-year old console that is still outselling its newer competition. Nintendo sold only about 400,000 units in the United States during its debut week, which was considered a sell-out.

What makes Microsoft's Xbox 360 numbers even more impressive is the fact that the console appears to hold up well in comparison to previous years. According to NPD, Microsoft sold 1.37 million consoles in November 2010; 819,500 in November 2009; 836,000 in November 2008 and 770,000 in November 2007. There was no shipment estimate for November 2011.

It?s been too long since we?ve been back to New Orleans. Fortunately, "Taste of Trem?: Creole, Cajun, and Soul Food from New Orleans?s Famous Neighborhood of Jazz"?by Todd-Michael St. Pierre?delivers. Published in October 2012, it is stuffed with doable recipes, from breakfast right on through to dinner, dessert, and cocktails.

"Taste of Trem?"?is also packed with the flavor and soul of the city. Author Todd-Michael St. Pierre shares some history of Trem?, his favorite NOLA neighborhood and the oldest African-American community in the nation. St. Pierre says of the area ?music is always in the air and something wonderful is always simmering on the stove.?

This recipe for shrimp with cheddar grits had me at "grits."?I grew up in St. Louis, about as far north as grits reliably get on breakfast joint menus. And I have a lot of family in the South. So the creamy texture and buttery, salty taste of grits (to those of you who put sugar or syrup on grits, stop it) is a road trip welcome home sign for my mouth.

It helps to think of grits as kind of polenta (they?re both ground corn) or even risotto, filtered through Southern kitchens. All are slow cooked to a creamy finish that, unlike rice or pasta, doesn?t need a sauce or gravy. In fact, they often serve as the slightly saucy base for other foods.

St. Pierre warns that a ?true grits connoisseur will scold you if you suggest that they use instant grits or what are commonly called ?quick grits.? ? On the day I had for shopping, quick grits were all I could find ? Chicago may be too far north for the real thing. If you can find old-fashioned, slow-cooking grits, do so. Otherwise, the quick grits are pretty good. However, don?t use the instant grits ? even I wouldn?t do that.

Spicy Shrimp with Tomatoes and Cheddar Grits
Serves 3

For the shrimp:

2 tablespoons canola or olive oil

1 small red bell pepper, chopped

1 small yellow onion, chopped

3/4 pound uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 tablespoon Creole/Cajun spice (see Kitchen Notes)

2 to 3 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped

For the grits:

Stem cells being made from blood

A patient's own blood has been used to make personalised stem cells, which doctors hope will eventually be used to treat a range of diseases.

The team at the University of Cambridge says this could be one of the easiest and safest sources of stem cells.

In a study, published in the journal Stem Cells: Translational Medicine, the cells were used to build blood vessels.

However, experts cautioned that the safety of using such stem cells was still unclear.

Stem cells are one of the great hopes of medical research. They can transform into any other type of cell the body is built from - so they should be able to repair everything from the brain to the heart, and eyes to bone.

?Start Quote

It's a hell of a lot easier to get a blood sample than a high quality skin sample so that's a big benefit?

End Quote Prof Chris Mason University College London

One source of stem cells is embryos, but this is ethically controversial and they would be rejected by the immune system in the same way as an organ transplant.

Researchers have shown that skin cells taken from an adult can be tricked into becoming stem cells, which the body should recognise as part of itself and would not reject.

The team at Cambridge looked in blood samples for a type of repair cell that whizzes through the bloodstream repairing any damage to the walls of blood vessels. These were then converted into stem cells.

Dr Amer Rana said this method was better than taking samples from skin.

"We are excited to have developed a practical and efficient method to create stem cells from a cell type found in blood," she said.

"Tissue biopsies are undesirable - particularly for children and the elderly - whereas taking blood samples is routine for all patients."

Dr Rana told the BBC the cells also appeared to be safer to use than those made from skin.

"The fact that these appeared to be fairly stable is very promising," she said.

"The next stage obviously is to say, 'OK if we can do all this, let's actually make some clinical grade cells,' we can then move this technology into the clinic for the first time."

Prof Chris Mason, an expert on regenerative medicine at University College London, said there was some "beautiful work" coming out of the lab in Cambridge.

"It's a hell of a lot easier to get a blood sample than a high quality skin sample, so that's a big benefit," he said.

"However, induced pluripotent stem cells [those converted from adult cells] are still very new, we need far more experience to totally reprogram a cell in a way we know to be safe."

The British Heart Foundation said these cells had "great potential".

The Medical Research Council said there was "rapid progress" being made in the this field.

Union Accused of 'Anti-Semitism' at Trial

Thursday 1st November 2012

Britain's academic trade union was accused of being "institutionally anti-Semitic" at a London employment tribunal this week.

The claim was made against the University and College Union and, in part, concerns the union's response to an academic boycott of Israel.

Ronnie Fraser, a maths lecturer who brought the claim, alleges that the union harassed him on the grounds of his race or religion by creating a hostile environment for Jews.

According to the Times of Israel, the tribunal heard how Fraser believed this "derived from a culture and attitude informed by contemporary anti-Zionism". The claimant added: "Complaints about anti-Semitism are met with either bald denials or accusations that the complainant is attempting to stifle debate."

The first day of the hearing heard of discussions regarding a decision on whether to bar a South African speaker who had, two days earlier, been found guilty of hate crimes against the Jewish community.

More than 30 witnesses have been listed for the claimant, among them Booker Prize-winning novelist Howard Jacobson.

The case is expected to last four weeks.

MegaFon raises $1.7 billion in Moscow, London IPO

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's second-largest mobile phone operator MegaFon says it has raised $1.7 billion in its public offering in Moscow and London.

MegaFon, the last of Russia's big three mobile company to hold an IPO, said on Wednesday that it sold 15 percent of its stock at $20 a share, the lower end of its target. The IPO thus valued the company at $11.1 billion, lower than analyst estimated.

MegaFon will be traded in the form of shares in Moscow and global depositary receipts in London.

A holding company owned by one of Russia's richest man, Alisher Usmanov, holds 55.8 percent in MegaFon while Sweden's TeliaSonera has 29 percent.

MegaFon is largely focused on the Russian market, unlike its competitors MTS and Vimpelcom which have expanded outside Russia.

Fighter's release fuels fears of ethnic violence in Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - An ethnic Dagestani martial arts fighter was spared jail on Tuesday by a Moscow court that found him guilty of the manslaughter of an ethnic Russian in a case that could fuel protests on the anniversary of nationalist riots.

Riot police were on alert after the ruling and restricted access to Manezh square, scene of Moscow's worst ethnic violence in post-Soviet history on December 11, 2010.

Police detained several nationalists outside the court where some were shouting chants urging people to gather in Manezh square again, RBC news agency said.

The violence in 2010 was triggered by a killing of soccer fan Yegor Sviridov by a group of migrants from the Northern Caucasus, which includes Dagestan, and nationalists are planning rallies on the anniversary.

President Vladimir Putin is facing a difficult balancing act between rising Russian nationalism and the interests of national republics with large ethnic diasporas in big cities.

Some analysts regard radical nationalism as the single biggest threat faced by the country, which is home to more than 160 distinct national and ethnic groups.

Professional fighter Rasul Mirzayev, who fought under the name "Black Tiger", killed ethnic Russian Ivan Agafonov in August 2011 in a brawl outside a Moscow night club.

The court ruled that Mirzayev had used his skills when hitting Agafonov, who fell on the pavement injuring his head, lost consciousness and later died in hospital.

Under the conditions of his release, Mirzayev will have to regularly report to police and stay in his home region.

"I was really very surprised, I did not think I would be released, I was sure that I would stay in jail," Mirzayev told Lifenews Internet portal from his courtroom cell. "First thing I want is to go see my mother and daughter."

Agafonov's relatives, who shouted "shame, shame" when the fighter was ushered out of court after the judge read the verdict, said they would appeal against the decision.

Riot police restricted access to the square after some nationalist politicians warned of the possibility of new riots. Interfax news agency said similar calls were made by nationalist on social networks.

"People's discontent is rising. One should not forget that December 11 is the Manezh square anniversary," said nationalist politician Alexander Belov.

Putin remained silent on the court ruling on Tuesday. After the 2010 riots Putin, then prime minister, sought to pacify soccer fans by laying flowers at the grave of the murdered fan.

Aslan Cherkesov, the man who killed Sviridov, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Thousands celebrate Hobbit premiere in New Zealand

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people packed New Zealand's capital city, clambering on roofs and hanging onto lamp posts on Wednesday to get a glimpse of the stars at the red carpet world premiere of the film "The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey".

Wellington, where director Peter Jackson and much of the post production is based, renamed itself "the Middle of Middle Earth", and fans with prominent Hobbit ears, medieval style costumes, and wizard hats had camped out the night before to claim prized spaces along the 500 meter (550 yards) red carpet.

Jackson, a one time newspaper printer and the maker of the Oscar winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy more than a decade ago, was cheered along the walk, stopping to talk to fans, sign autographs and pose for photos.

The Hobbit trilogy is set 60 years before the Rings movies, but Jackson said it has benefited from being made after the conclusion of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy saga.

"I'm glad that we established the style and the look of Middle Earth by adapting Lord of the Rings before we did the Hobbit," Jackson told Reuters from the red carpet.

Jackson, a hometown hero in Wellington, said the production had been on a "difficult journey", alluding to Warner Brothers' financial problems, and a later labor dispute with unions.

"Fate meant for us to be here," he told an ecstatic crowd, which hailed him as a film genius, but also a down to earth local boy.

"I came here to see the stars but also Peter (Jackson)...I loved the Lord of the Rings and that made me want to be here, without him none of it would be here," said teenage student Samantha Cooper.

OLD FRIENDS

The cast was no less enthusiastic about the Hobbit, especially those who had starred in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

British actor Andy Serkis, who plays the creature Gollum with a distinctive throaty whisper, said picking up the character after a near-ten year break was like putting on a familiar skin.

"I was reminded on a daily basis with Gollum (that) he's truly never left me," he said.

Most of the film's stars attended the premiere, including British actor Martin Freeman, who plays the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, and Elijah Wood. Ian McKellen, who plays the wizard Gandalf, was absent.

Freeman, known for his roles in the comedy The Office and Sherlock Holmes, said he looked for a different, lighter, slightly pompous Baggins from the older, wiser character played by Ian Holm in the Rings movies.

"Between us - Peter (Jackson) and me -- we hashed out another version of Bilbo. There'll be others, but our version is this one and I hope people like it," he said.

The production was at the center of several controversies, including a dispute with unions in 2010 over labor contracts that nearly sent the filming overseas and resulted in the government stepping in to change employment laws.

The only sour note at the premiere came when animal rights activists held up posters saying "Middle Earth unexpected cruelty" and "3 horses died for this film", after claims last week that more than 20 animals died during the making of the film.

Event organizers tried to block out the protesters' posters with large Hobbit film billboards. Jackson has said some animals died on a farm where they were housed, but none had been hurt during filming.

The movies have been filmed in 3D and at 48 frames per second (fps), compared with the standard 24 fps, which Jackson has likened to the quality leap to compact discs from vinyl records.

The second film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" will be released in December next year, with the third "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" due in mid-July 2014.

Local real estate broker keeps his employees fit through unique ...

Bill Gladstone begins his workout wearing a crisp white shirt, dress slacks and shiny leather shoes. A wireless earpiece keeps him connected to his cellphone.

Gladstone is a Lemoyne-based commercial real estate broker. Several of his employees stand nearby, watching the boss warm up.

Like many small-business owners, Gladstone continually wrestles with employee health care costs.

He plunged into fitness a few years ago. Now he?s a devotee of a routine offered at Synchrony ChiroCare in East Pennsboro Township.

He hopes his employees buy into it as well ? so much that he pays their monthly fees and allows them to go during work time.

In his mind, even 10 minutes a week is better than nothing.

Gladstone?s first exercises take place on a power plate. The machine resembles a treadmill, but has a round platform that vibrates 40 times per second while Gladstone?s feet remain stationary.

?Some people call this the microwave of exercise,? says Michael Bennese, the chiropractor who owns Synchrony ChiroCare and who designed Gladstone?s workout.

The power plate concept was invented 40 years ago by Russian scientists trying to enable astronauts to stay fit and avoid bone loss while in outer space.

According to Bennese, each vibration causes the muscles to contract and relax. At 40 times per second, this results in an intense workout involving many muscles, including the core.

Gladstone does a handful of sets, each one lasting about 10 seconds. One involves keeping his shoulders back and chest out as he presses his upper back against a post while the power plate vibrates.

During another, called the bird dog, he supports himself on one hand and one knee, with the opposite limbs outstretched, as the machine vibrates.

Growing popularity?

Power plate equipment has become popular in gyms in recent years and has been touted by celebrities including Madonna.

According to Bennese, who is certified in biomechanics, many professional athletes do training that involves the power plate.

But he says nonathletes, including older people, can benefit from a power plate-centered routine that takes as little as 15 minutes per week.

The intense vibrations, he says, cause a high percentage of the available muscles to become involved.

The benefits of a brief routine can include the ability to engage in physical activities longer before fatigue sets in.

For people who are older, it can improve the ability to walk or stand for long periods without getting a sore back, do yard work, or pick up a grandchild, Bennese says.

Gladstone, whose clothes are unrumpled and who hasn?t broken a sweat, moves on to his next exercises.

These involve four exercises on two machines. With each exercise, he presses or pulls as hard as he can for five seconds. An electronic screen shows how much force he generates, and compares it to previous workouts.

The overall routine is called ?BStrong4Life,? which claims to improve strength, posture and overall health in less then 30 minutes per week.

Gladstone?s routine involves other exercises, as well as chiropractic treatment.

He doesn?t ask his employees to do the same routine. Theirs is more basic, taking only about 10 minutes.

Providing health benefits

?Gladstone, 63, says providing good health benefits has always been a high priority.

But rising health insurance premiums have forced him to shop for new coverage each year and shift costs to employees in the form of deductibles and co-pays, he says.

All the while, he has tried to invest in employees? wellness, hoping he will benefit in the form of lower health care bills and higher productivity. He says he also hopes to help his employees improve their overall well-being and ability to enjoy their nonworking hours.

Gladstone has long paid toward gym memberships, giving employees up to $500 per year toward gym expenses if they go at least twice per week.

The economic downturn forced him to withdraw the gym membership perk for a few years, but he has restored it.

To that end, he decided to also offer Bennese?s program. It?s voluntary; four of his five employees opted to participate.

In Gladstone?s case, he?s convinced the training has enhanced a fitness routine he launched several years ago.

Focusing on posture?

For many years, Gladstone?s life involved long work hours and little physical activity.

Finally, he began working out at a gym and discovered he felt better.

Then Gladstone, who says he typically rises by 4 a.m. and works into the evening, wanted a way for he and his wife to spend more time together.

They chose ballroom dancing, which gave another boost to his fitness routine.

However, dance instructors continually told him to stand up straight, a position he found he could no longer maintain.

That led him to Bennese, the chiropractor, who took images of Gladstone?s spine and found it had become curved in a way that caused Gladstone?s head to hang too far forward.

Bennese conducted a basic exam in which he examined the alignment of the head over the rib cage, the rib cage over the pelvis and the hips over the feet.

If any of those relationships are out of whack, muscles get overstressed, leading to pain and other physical problems, he says.

?If that is happening, the body is coping by using excessive muscle contractions to hold that body part up,? he says.

Standing straighter?

After several months, Gladstone says he feels stronger and better and stands straighter.

?You don?t want to be hunched over as you get older. It?s bad for business. It?s bad for your health,? he says.

His employees, who have been doing their routines for more than a month, don?t claim dramatic changes, although they say they?ve noticed benefits.

Mostly, they say it has been helpful to learn about the importance of posture and become aware of deficiencies in their postures and how to improve it.

?It?s cool to see how you increase each week,? says Leah Wentz, 29, referring to the exercises that involve mustering as much force as possible for 5 to 10 seconds.

Chuck Bender, 29, says he?s ?new to fitness,? and began a running routine a few months ago.

He says he?s noticed some increased definition in his muscles and will consider moving to a more involved routine.

Katie Warrell, 29, Gladstone?s daughter, goes to the gym regularly, where she runs and does aerobics and a strength routine.

She says she has learned from Bennese?s program.

?It definitely made me more attuned to my posture at work and at home,? she says.

Gladstone can only hope they?ll stick with this routine ? or any routine that leads to improved health and well-being.

He says he has achieved one goal.

?When I take an interest in them, they take an interest in their work,? he says.?

New Android apps worth downloading: Speaktoit Assistant update, ForeverMap 2, Hyperwave

Fire up today?s leading new app, an updated Speaktoit Assistant, to get the most out of using voice commands with your Android device. In addition, ForeverMap 2, an app designed to make traveling easy whether you?re offline or online, and Hyperwave, a 2.5-D arcade shooter with a flashy neon art style.

What?s it about? Another voice-activated command app, Speaktoit Assistant can launch apps, search the Internet and answer questions, all with commands spoken in natural language.

What?s cool? Speaktoit Assistant has undergone a huge overhaul, bringing a big redesign to the user interface and a number of improvements to the app. It also now features social connectivity that lets you share Assistant?s answers to questions with your friends. At its core, the app remains all about finding information, and mirrors similar technology like Apple?s Siri, giving you the ability to find a lot of different things, ranging from weather reports to maps and more. Just keep in mind that Speaktoit Assistant is still a beta release and is undergoing further improvements.

Who?s it for? If you like voice command technology, you should definitely try out Speaktoit Assistant.

What?s it like? Check out other virtual assistant apps in Skyvi and EVA.

What?s it about? Maps app ForeverMap 2 lets you access online, GPS-style maps as you would get from other mapping applications, but lets you download maps for later offline use.

What?s cool? First off, ForeverMap 2 packs a lot of highly detailed and useful maps for a number of different states, countries and locations. If you?re looking for an alternative map app, this is a solid one. Even better is that ForeverMap 2 can provide a ton of maps for offline use, too, allowing you to navigate new states, countries, or wherever. You?ll get your first offline map set for free, and additional maps can be purchased.

Who?s it for? Travelers who could use both online and offline map alternatives.

What?s it like? Google?s Maps is a well-loved favorite, and Maps (-) lets you cache maps for offline viewing.

?

What?s it about? Arcade shooter Hyperwave puts players up against waves of alien invaders, with tons of enemies to dodge and destroy.

What?s cool? Hyperwave uses a 2.5-D viewpoint, which means it looks 3-D, but players actually play on a 2-D plane. That perspective is something of a novelty, as is the game?s heavy neon, laser-inspired art style. Beyond the looks, Hyperwave effectively keeps players in the action all the time, forcing them to dodge incoming enemies while trying to defend the bottom of the screen, not unlike Space Invaders. You also find power-ups that make your ship more powerful along the way.

Who?s it for? If you like arcade shooters and titles such as Space Invaders, Hyperwave is definitely worth a try.

What?s it like? Developer Catfish Games also has a title called Hyperlight, which is similar but offers a different experience.

My Visit to China: Some Sociological Observations : Asian-Nation ...

A couple of weeks ago, I made my first ever visit to China and I wanted to share some sociological observations with you about what I saw and experienced while I was there. My trip was under the auspices of my university?s International Programs Office (IPO) that?s in charge of all the study abroad programs on campus. From time to time, the IPO visits various study abroad sites around the world to make sure that they are high-quality programs for our students. Normally, the different staff at the IPO conducts these visits, but this time around, they asked me if I wanted to go to Beijing to check out the Council on International Educational Exchange?s (CIEE) programs in Beijing. It was an offer I could not pass up, so I jumped at the opportunity.

Specifically, the CIEE programs that I visited were based at Minzu University and Peking University. As the CIEE staff described to me, Minzu University was established in 1951 to basically assimilate members of China?s 56 ethnic minority groups (such as Tibetans, Uyghurs, Zhuang, Manchus, Hui, Miao, Yi, Mongols, etc.) into the majority Han culture. However, through the years, its focus and curriculum have evolved to become more tolerant and now promotes the retention of many aspects of culture and tradition among such ethnic minorities. Peking University is frequently called the ?Harvard of China? and is considered to be the crown jewel of China?s university system. In its 2011-2012 ranking of universities around the world, the Times Higher Education listed Peking University as number 49 overall and as the top university in China.

Although I do not have anything to which I can compare these study abroad programs since this was my first such site visit, overall I found the CIEE programs at both universities to be comprehensive and impressive. There was a wide variety of academic and field opportunities for U.S. students at both schools to learn about Chinese language and culture inside and outside of the classroom. I found the staff there to be very friendly, professional, well-skilled, and enthusiastic about their programs. I also talked to a number of U.S. students currently studying abroad in these two CIEE programs and they all raved about the positive experiences they?ve had there. From what I saw during my site visit, I would certainly recommend these programs to my students.

Below are a few pictures from my visit to China. You can view a more detailed photostream at my Flickr page.

China at a Crossroads

While I was in China and in my conversations with the CIEE staff and with both Chinese and U.S. students, a recurring theme was that China seems to be at a crossroads in its history and that there are two important issues within which China is struggling to find its balance in terms of where it wants to position itself politically, economically, and culturally within the global community. Each of these issues that I?ll discuss in more detail below represent a paradox or set of interesting contradictions that are playing themselves out within modern Chinese society.

I am certainly not the first observer, analyst, or scholar to discuss these issues, nor can I claim to have comprehensive expertise on such issues. Nonetheless, I would like to share my observations as a sociologist who wants to apply my academic interest in how Asians (and China specifically) fit into the contemporary global community in the 21st century and how Asian Americans fit into these international dynamics as well.

The first paradoxical issue concerns the growing sense of nationalism in China. This nationalism was most recently manifested in angry and sometimes violent protests against Japan over some small islands that lie between China (Diaoyu in Chinese) and Japan (Senkaku in Japanese) and are claimed by both countries. More generally, nationalism directed against foreigners has been evident in China for a while and from time to time, flares up and can turn ugly.

In my conversations with different people in China, they mentioned that a famous Chinese philosopher named Lu Xun observed about a hundred years ago that China frequently see themselves as either superior or inferior in relation to foreign powers, but never equal to them ? it?s either a feeling of superiority or inferiority. With this in mind, nationalist feelings of superiority or inferiority need points of comparison. In modern times, China has two main international points of comparison ? in Asia, it?s Japan and in the western world, it?s the U.S.

My contacts also observed that in most cases, the average Chinese citizen will rarely express such nationalist feelings directly to a foreigner, there was one instance in which this nationalism was directly visible to me and other site visitors in this trip. Specifically, a group of us (all from the U.S. involved in the CIEE site visit) was walking through Peking University when a Chinese male in his mid-40s came up to us and started speaking Chinese to us. Unfortunately none of us spoke Chinese, but even after we said that to him in English, he still kept speaking. We then pulled a Chinese American study abroad student (let?s call him ?Keith?) who was accompanying us while we were at Peking University into the conversation. The Chinese man then turned his attention to Keith and as Keith relayed to us later, went into a tirade against the presence of foreigners in China. Although this man was not shouting, he was obviously very assertive in expressing himself. Considering the recent protests against Japan, this was probably a relatively mild form of nationalism that we experienced.

The contradiction here is that China very much wants to attain a position of respect and status within the international community and wants to continue attracting international investment and promoting global trade. In other words, it needs to engage with the international community. But on the other hand, a large part of the national discourse within China emphasizes China?s superiority over foreign powers and in fact, advocates limiting or even eliminating the presence of foreigners inside China.

An interesting component to this emerging nationalism in China is that much of it was initiated and encouraged by the Chinese government, at least in the beginning. As other analysts have pointed out, when it comes to particular issues such as the disputes with Japan, Chinese government officials have tried to maintain a sense of diplomacy in public while behind the scenes, frequently allowed or even facilitated nationalist rhetoric and citizen protests to serve their political interests. The problem however, is that the Chinese government may be losing control over this nationalist monster that they?ve created. As one of my contacts noted, when you keep feeding the citizens ?wolves? milk,? eventually they?ll grow up to be wolves.

I have written about this kind of ?cultural schizophrenia? in China before. On the institutional and national level, this sense of fluctuating between two extremes while trying to find your identity is actually similar to what many Asian Americans face on the individual level as they try to balance the ?Asian? and ?American? sides of their identity. In China?s case, as it tries to solidify its position in the international community, it?s likely that such internal struggles will continue to take place and it remains to be seen how the emerging contradictions between the government?s ?Dr. Jekyll? and the nationalists? ?Mr. Hyde? will play themselves out.

Where Do Chinese Americans Fit Into China?

The second sociological dynamic that I observed while in China relates to where Chinese Americans fit into modern Chinese society. Like a number of other Asian American scholars, I have a growing interest in looking at how Asian Americans fit into Asian societies and how they use both their Asian and American identities to potentially bridge the political and cultural gaps between the U.S. and Asian countries. As such, I was very interested in hearing from Chinese American students and their experiences studying abroad in China.

In addition to ?Keith? (mentioned above), I also spoke at length to another Chinese American student; let?s call her ?Kathy.? They both described similar experiences of feeling caught in a ?cultural limbo? while in China. That is, on the one hand, their physical appearance is Asian and more specifically, Chinese. But on the other hand, their nationality is American. This frequently means that upon first contact, most Chinese nationals assume that they are Chinese. But once they start talking, they are quickly seen as American, even though they speak Chinese pretty well.

Both Keith and Kathy noted to me that once this happens, more often than not, Chinese nationals lose interest in speaking to them. I asked them why and they said that Chinese tend to be more interested in talking to ?regular? Americans ? i.e., White Americans. In other words, even within China, while they are treated generally as Americans (rather than as Chinese), Chinese Americans are generally not seen as representing the ?normal? image or perception of what Chinese think of as ?American? ? i.e. they are not White.

Nonetheless, Kathy and Keith told me that once they got used to this cultural dynamic, they were eventually able to create and embrace their own ?Chinese American? identity that is neither completely Chinese nor completely American, but a fluid combination of both. Upon doing this, they said that they felt more comfortable using this identity to begin bridging the cultural gaps between China and the U.S. in small ways during their stay in China.

This process of creating an ?Asian American? identity that combines and bridges two sets of cultures is what Americans of Asian ancestry have been doing for centuries. It is with this understanding in mind that I think Asian Americans are positioned to take make tangible contributions toward applying their globalized and transnational characteristics and experiences to bridging the political and cultural gaps between the U.S. and Asian countries. In fact, scholars are beginning to examine and describe examples of Asian Americans in different social settings acting as ?cultural ambassadors? in Asian societies.

Therefore, if countries such as China continue to pursue a position of respect within the wider international community while still retaining elements of their national identity, they can learn from Chinese Americans who have have years of experience and expertise in doing exactly that ? integrating themselves into mainstream U.S. society while keeping elements their Chinese culture intact. This is not to say that it has been a seamless or smooth process and in fact, Chinese- and Asian Americans have been and continue to face suspicions and challenges regarding their ?real? identity.

Nonetheless, institutional changes taking place, such as the ongoing effects of globalization, greater transnationalism, and increased multiculturalism, have transformed the racial, ethnic, and cultural landscape of both U.S. society and the world in general. Within this new social environment, there are new opportunities for minority groups such as Asian Americans to assert an identity that legitimately incorporates elements of, and for the benefit of, different societies and cultures.

There is an old Chinese saying that goes, ?May you live in interesting times.? From a sociological point of view, this is indeed a very interesting time for China and there are a number of interesting ways that Chinese Americans (and Asian Americans as a whole) can participate in forging a more inclusive path forward into the 21st century.

HTC opens store-within-a-store in Germany, hopes it's your One-stop shop

HTC tests storewithinastore in Germany, wants to be notsoquietly brilliant at retail

Electronics giants who want to compete for retail attention but can't always justify a full presence have a common trick: open a mini store. Apple did it, Microsoft did it, and Samsung virtually based the Galaxy S III launch on it. HTC is next at bat. While it has its own stores in Asia and parts of Europe, the smartphone designer is trying out a store-within-a-store at the giant Saturn-Markt shop in Hamburg, Germany. Swing by and you can buy or test a device like the One X+ or Windows Phone 8X alongside accessories -- including Beats headphones, naturally -- with dedicated staff to help. HTC didn't immediately have details of larger plans when we reached out, but there's talk at MyDrivers of further such stores as well as seminars that would help make sense out of Sense. There's no guarantee that HTC will benefit from carving out its own retail space in what's often considered hostile territory; even so, the move can't hurt when the company is fighting for relevancy.

Autism tied to pollution from traffic | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Children exposed to higher levels of air pollution early in life may have an increased risk of autism, a new study suggests.

?

In the study, children living in areas with high levels of traffic-generated air pollution during their first year of life were three times more likely to have autism than children living in areas with low levels.

?

There was also a link between exposure to air pollution in the womb ? particularly during late pregnancy ? and an increased risk of autism, according to the study.

?

The findings held even after the researchers accounted for factors possibly related to autism risk, including a child's gender and ethnicity, their parent's education and smoking in pregnancy.

?

The results add to previous findings linking exposure to air pollution with autism risk

?

However, the new study shows only an association, not a cause-effect link, and the researchers did not gather information on the children's nutrition, or their exposure to indoor pollutants and secondhand smoke, which could affect the results.

?

"Although additional research to replicate these findings is needed, the public health implications of these findings are large because air pollution exposure is common and may have lasting neurological effects," the researchers write in the Nov. 26 issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

?

Autism and air pollution

The study included 524 children between ages 2 and 5 living in California, including 279 children with autism. Most children lived in areas around Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

?

Heather Volk, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Southern California, and colleagues used the children's addresses to estimate their level of exposure to air pollution from traffic during pregnancy and the first year of life. The researchers also used information from air-pollution monitoring systems throughout the area that took into account road traffic volume and other measures.

?

Children living in areas estimated to have the highest levels of traffic-generated air pollution ? about 32 parts per billion (ppb) and above ? were more likely to have autism than children living in areas estimated to have levels of 10 ppb and below.

?

A person living at least 500 meters from a freeway in Southern California would be exposed to air pollution levels one-half to one-third of the levels seen in the highest pollution group, Volk said.

?

Children exposed to air pollution levels between 10 and 32 ppb were not at increased risk of autism compared with children exposed to lower levels.

?

Exposure to high levels of particulate matter, or particles in the air, was also associated with an increased risk of autism. Such particles are small enough to be inhaled into the lungs, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

?

Volk noted that air-quality measures do not necessarily reflect the amount of traffic-generated air pollution on a local level, and so people living in areas with good air quality might still be at increased risk.

?

Potential for brain damage

If the link is real, exposure to air pollution is not likely to account for many cases of autism, said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, N.Y., who noted that many children don't live within 1 to 3 miles of a major highway.

?

"As much as it would be perhaps attractive to find a single cause for autism, the reality is there are many different causes," including genetic factors, said Adesman, who was not involved in the study. Many lines of research are needed to investigate these causes, Adesman said.

?

It's not known how air pollution might increase autism risk, but previous studies suggest it's biologically plausible.

?

Particles called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are present in diesel exhaust have been shown to affect brain function through interactions with genes, the researchers said. In addition, research suggests air pollution may trigger inflammation that impairs the the tissue layer separating the brain from its blood vessels.

REAL ESTATE: New twist on FHA mortage insurance : Real Estate

Posted on | November 26, 2012 | Comments

Megan Hopkins, wrote in her Nov. 21 blog, Rewired, about an under-reported tidbit she found that I?d like to share with you.

It concerns the Federal Housing Administration?s decision to reverse an original plan to cancel the mortgage insurance program for its mortgages.

For those of you with FHA-backed mortgages who are looking into a streamlined refinance, Hopkins of HousingWire.com suggested this is the time to act, writing that: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in its 2012 annual report, plans to reverse its stance cancel requiring payments of monthly mortgage insurance premiums on new FHA-backed loans sometime in 2013.

The FHA believes this will strengthen its capital position.

Hopkins wrote that while FHA?s 100 percent insurance guarantee remained in effect for the 30-year life of a loan, borrowers have been required to pay the mortgage insurance premiums for less than 10 years.

According to a FHA statement, this put the FHA in a compromised position ? lacking premiums to cover losses on loans that went into default.

Currently, once the principal balance on a mortgage hits 78% and at least 60 mortgage payments have been made, you are free from paying the insurance premium.

The change applies to new loans. New homebuyers who finance their home through FHA in the future should see the mortgage insurance payments remain due on the loan until the house is sold or refinanced under conventional mortgage.

Pilot whales use synchronized swimming when they sense danger

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? An international team of scientists have observed the behavior of various groups of cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar and Cape Breton in Canada belonging to the Globicephala melas species, which are also known as long-finned pilot whales. These results show that these whales use synchronized swimming when they identify the presence of an external threat.

There are 300 pilot whales inhabiting the Straight of Gibraltar. Here these cetaceans remain throughout the entire year in the water of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. But, little is known about their social structure.

Headed by the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) in collaboration with the Do?ana Biological Station (CSIC) and Conservation, Information and Study on Cetaceans (CIRCE) group, the study analyzed the patterns of association between individuals within this whale community. The aim was to provide a long-term vision of their social system.

"The important point is that we compared two different populations: one inhabiting the Strait of Gibraltar which is exposed to predators (boats in this case) and another with an ecotype where there are not so many boats (Cape Breton in Canada). The pilot whales are social species and we were interested in seeing how mothers teach their young, for example. We observed that they use synchronized swimming when in danger," as explained Renaud de Stephanis, researcher of the Biological Station of Do?ana and coauthor of the study published in the journal behavioral Processes.

Between 1999 and 2006 the scientists gathered samples in an area of 23,004 km in the Strait of Gibraltar and took 4,887 images of the dorsal fins of whales to compare them with those in Canada.

"They swim in complete synchrony both in the Strait of Gibraltar and Canada. When sea traffic or whale watching vessels are nearby, the whole group collectively reacts to such external stimuli. When we arrived at the watching area they were swimming at their normal rhythm but after 10 or 15 minutes near to them, the mothers and their young began to swim in a synchronized manner in alert position. This is a sign of affiliation to the group," adds the expert.

According to the researcher, these cetaceans also have a social structure formed by permanent partnerships. This means that they spend their life with the same whales and they do not interchange between different groups, as in the case of bottlenose dolphins.

Thanks to the study we now know that the presence of vessels also disturbs diving behavior. "As such, when we began observing the whales up close, they tended to spend quite some time on the surface. However, the longer we spent nearby, the longer they stayed under water. This behavioral change could affect their energy levels, since they then have to make more of an effort to protect themselves and their young. In turn this limits hunting time, which means that they cannot feed their young properly," concludes the researcher.

Vestas Sailrocket 2 breaks 500meter speed record for sailing, suggests motors are for slowpokes video

Most of the boats achieving technical wonders these days have motors at their heart, even if they're completely fuel-free. Not so Vestas' Sailrocket 2, which just recently broke the 500-meter sailing speed record. A run across Namibia's Walvis Bay, just longer than the nautical mile the team wanted, saw pilot Paul Larsen officially reach a typical 54.1 knots (62.2MPH) with only wind power to carry him along. The necessary technological breakthough, as you'd suspect, comes mostly through the sail. Since the Sailrocket 2 doesn't have to turn in all directions, it uses an asymmetric wing whose optimized shape and lightweight carbon ribbing produce not only a very efficient power-to-weight ratio, but a seemingly logic-defying amplification effect: the sail catches wind generated by the boat's own speed, magnifying the intensity of any gusts until physics prevent going any faster. The kicker may be a slew of additional records coming in short order. As you'll see in the video after the break, Larsen has already hit unofficial averages of 55.3 knots (63.7MPH) over a nautical mile, 59.4 knots (68.3MPH) over 500 meters and 64.8 knots (74.6MPH) in peak speed. If we could reach that kind of pace on the water, we'd start to look at everyday motorboats as downright antiquated.

Syria rebels take army base as 'hotel warriors' struggle

By Reuters

AMMAN - Syrian rebels captured an army base in the eastern oil province of Deir al-Zor on Thursday, striking another blow against President Bashar Assad.

But Syria's newly-united opposition is struggling to consolidate, and even allies such as Tunisia and Libya have yet to lend their official support.

Ann Curry

Ann Curry photographs Syrian rebels and others affected by the conflict.

The capture of the artillery base on the outskirts of Mayadeen, a town on the Euphrates River near some of Syria's main oilfields, further weakens Assad?s control in the strategic region bordering Iraq.

"The whole countryside, from the Iraqi border and along the Euphrates to the city of Deir al-Zor, is now under rebel control," Abu Laila, an official in the Military Revolutionary Council in the province, told Reuters.

He said 44 rebel fighters had been killed in the siege of the base.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the violence from Britain through a network of activists, said government shells struck a building next to Aleppo's Dar al-Shifa hospital on Wednesday, one of the main rebel medical centers, killing 15 people.

Most of the dead were fighters but a doctor and three children also died, it said ? although the claims of individual activists in the conflict are impossible to verify.

Hotel warriors
Syria's new opposition leaders are struggling to win over powerful Islamist rebel combat units, whose radical elements question whether the "hotel warriors" of the fledgling coalition can offer their fighters any real support.?

/

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

Islamists have established themselves as the most effective, best armed and fastest growing units in the 20-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad.?

Many of them are wary of the National Coalition for Syrian Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, set up earlier this month in an attempt to unify Assad's fractured opponents and win greater international support.

"They are the hotel warriors, we are the men in the trenches. No one should be allowed to marginalize us, politically or militarily. These coalitions are just fighting over us and not for us," said Yassir al-Karaz, a leader in the rebel Tawheed Brigade in northern Aleppo province.

The problem for the new coalition is maintaining the backing of this crucial bloc of Syrian fighters on the ground while bolstering support from Western powers wary of funding a movement that may be linked to extremist groups.?

They're short of medicine, there's no electricity and the basic latrines are seeping sewage. But the continuing air assaults in Syria are forcing thousands of refugees to flee to makeshift camps on the Turkish border. Aid agencies are warning of a growing humanitarian crisis. Alex Thomson Channel 4 Europe reports.

While the coalition has won formal recognition from Turkey, France, Britain and Gulf Arab states, the response from many Islamist fighters has been skeptical.

Tunisia and Libya have agreed to hold off on recognition, saying they want to know more about its makeup before doing so, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki said Thursday.
