PALO ALTO, Calif. ? An early Stanford lead held up for the second consecutive day, as the No. 2 Cardinal beat No. 12 Texas 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Stanford scored twice in the first inning on a double, a fielding error, another double, and a sacrifice fly. The Cardinal inflated the cushion to 5-0 in the fifth.
Austin Wilson opened with a solo home run and Jake Stewart followed with a double.
Ricky Jacquez came in to relieve starter Hoby Milner for the Longhorns and walked Tyler Gaffney, before inducing a groundout by Steve Piscotty to put two runners in scoring position. After Brian Ragira struck out swinging, Kenny Diekroeger doubled down the right-field line to push two runs across.
In the sixth, Texas scored on a hit batsman, a walk and Jonathan Walsh's two-out single .
In the ninth, Texas loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batsman, before Jordan Etier knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Erich Weiss then ended the game with a deep fly out to center field.
Brett Mooneyham (2-0) earned the win for Stanford, striking out seven in eight innings .Milner (1-1) took the loss for Texas.
He allowed four runs - three earned - on five hits and one walk, striking out two over four innings .
The series wraps up today, with Stanford looking for its first-ever series sweep of Texas .
