8 Reasons To Use Direct Mail instead of Social Media - Social ...

It?s 2012, and the media landscape is more fractured than ever. More than 900 million people are using Facebook, including your grandmother. It?s also an age of Twitter and LinkedIn, texting and mobile apps. Even personal computers suddenly have become yesterday?s news. Now, lives revolve around smartphones and tablets. Yet, as crowded as the media space has become, direct mail still manages to not only fit, but remain a focal point for smart CMOs everywhere. Through it all, the staying power of direct mail remains undiminished.

A recent study by ExactTarget, an international company that specializes in interactive marketing, helps illustrate direct mail?s continued relevance. The survey asked consumers to indicate how they would like to receive 11 different types of messages. A headline in ExactTarget?s 2012 Channel Preference Survey screams the results: ?DIRECT MAIL LIVES!?

Survey Echoes Recent Research

The ExactTarget study gathered detailed input from 1,481 consumers of all ages on how they prefer to receive various types of information. The choices:

? E-mail ? Direct mail ? Telephone ? Text messaging ? Mobile app ? Social media

Out of 11 different categories of marketing messages, direct mail was chosen as the most acceptable means of communication in four categories, tied with e-mail as most acceptable in two others, and came in a close second behind e-mail in another four categories.

According to the survey, 65 percent of consumers have made a purchase as a result of a direct mail piece. The survey report provided the following analysis: ?In the face of always-on channels like e-mail, SMS and social networks, consumers appreciate direct mail?s tangibility, flexibility and once-a-day pace. It also remains the only channel where unsolicited messages are acceptable to a majority of consumers.?

Other recent surveys on consumer preference provided similar results:

? In 2011, Epsilon, a multichannel marketing service, surveyed nearly 5,000 consumers, including more than 2,200 in the United States. More than one-third expressed a preference for direct mail over the multitude of other channels. Of those surveyed, 60 percent said going to the mailbox and receiving a piece of mail provided an emotional boost. Consumers said they found mail to be more trustworthy than other forms of communication. The study found that the preference for mail extended to the 18- to 34-year-old demographic as well.

? In 2010, a Durham+Company survey found direct mail to be twice as effective as e-mail for soliciting donations online. Further underlining the importance of direct mail to motivate online giving, 37 percent who give online say that when they receive a direct mail appeal from a charity, they use the charity?s website to give the donation.

So what is the reason for direct mail?s staying power? We sought the views of seven experts, including the author of the ExactTarget study: Jeffrey Rohrs, vice president, Marketing Research and Education of the Indianapolis-based company. Here?s what they told us ?

Denver-based Heinrich Marketing likes to think of itself as the CSI of the marketing world, asking the tough questions before getting the creative department involved. Heinrich managing director Laura Sonderup says the research has shown that mail continues to be one of the most cost-effective methods for targeting that any marketer can deploy: ?In many instances, mail allows us to localize lead generation far more efficiently than other marketing channels ? down to the census tract and neighborhood level when necessary. Our largest clients insist that direct mail be included in their marketing plans as a means of maximizing budgets and increasing return on investment.?

1. Mail Is Tangible

Direct mail, says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget, ?provides a tangible experience that digital media does not replicate. And in a world of hyper-fragmentation of communication channels, where you can get a phone call, text, e-mail, post on Facebook, message on Twitter, message on apps, there?s something about mail and how it cuts through the digital clutter that remains attractive to consumers.?

Jamie Matusek, marketing director of Austin, Texas?based QuantumDigital, echoes that view: ?From a consumer perspective, yes, the majority of us have mobile device in hand 24/7 ? but there is something to be said about a targeted mail piece and offer from a company I do business with. It?s a great way to help in making bigger decisions like home improvement projects, or even just getting an invitation to try a new restaurant in my local neighborhood. Mail tends to break through the digital noise for a bit and offers a moment for a targeted message to resonate. Plus, it offers a great way for businesses to focus on local neighborhood marketing, hitting potential customers who are close to home.?

2. Mail Integrates Well

Says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget: ?As I look at our 2012 survey compared to our 2008 survey, the real story is that we have multichannel consumers due to the explosion of devices, so you?d better have cross-channel communication strategies. You need to be integrating your channels so that you can influence your consumers in different ways. This is where direct mail can work hand-in-glove with e-mail and social media. There will always be a place for channels that break the mold and pleasantly surprise consumers.?

3. People Like Opening Mail

Part of the power of mail, adds ExactTarget?s Jeffrey Rohrs, lies in the mundane consumer ceremony of padding to the mailbox each day: ?There?s a moment every day where folks go to the mailbox, and they take that brief respite and they look at what they?ve received. It is a ritual. It goes beyond habit. It is part of what people do. And those marketers who can get there cost-effectively and creatively will continue to have an opportunity to differentiate themselves and their brand in interesting ways that will produce a return on investment.?

4. There?s Less Competition in Direct Mail

Jon Yokogawa, vice president of consumer engagement for interTrend, a full-service communications agency in Long Beach, Calif., contends that the technology age has actually boosted the impact of direct mail. ?Your e-mail inbox is the new mailbox, filled with bills, letters from friends, family and work,? he says. ?So the amount of paper in your mailbox is less. Therefore, you would be more inclined to look more carefully at any type of mail that you do receive from the Postal Service.??

Content marketing expert Joe Pulizzi, the founder of the Content Marketing Institute, Cleveland, and the largest content marketing event, Content Marketing World, warns marketers against becoming too ?infatuated? with other channels, as mail continues to get the job done. ?For certain goals like getting immediate attention, direct mail is perfect,? says Pulizzi. ?There?s so much less competition in the print channel these days, the opportunity to get noticed is probably as great as it?s been in decades.?

5. Mail Builds Loyalty

Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute by underscores the value that mail has in cultivating loyalty and brand evangelism among consumers. ?We know from our research at the Content Marketing Institute that only about 30 percent of our customers create and distribute a custom magazine, but we think there?s great opportunity in that channel to build loyalty,? he says. ?Social media is selective. It?s hard to get on that must-read list. If you just go through any airport and walk around, you?ll see all the electronic devices and, at the same time, you?ll still see younger Millennials who are holding magazines, especially females, because it?s still such a visual, tactile media.?

6. Mail Is More Sophisticated Now

Jon Yokogawa of interTrend points out that the evolution of mail messaging ? from the refinement of offers to new personalization tools ? has also buoyed the channel and confirmed its ongoing relevance: ?The sophistication of mail messaging has greatly improved over the years. Top companies use the platform, and that builds credibility. Nowadays, direct mail is not just for the remnant budgets of smaller clients. Many industries see this form of marketing as a proven medium, having better and actual measurements (ROI) than traditional TV, print, outdoor advertising or radio.?

Louis Maldonado, managing director of New York-based d exp?sito & partners, an agency specializing in integrated communications, including direct mail, points out how the digital age has added to mail?s power, introducing elements such as QR Codes, augmented reality and SnapTags to mail marketing: ?Direct marketing has experienced a resurgence of excitement given the new technologies and tools available now. The increased targetability of e-mail and mobile channels, as well as the enhanced engagement and dialogue opportunities afforded through social media, serve to complement and fuel response rates to the tried-and-true channels, like direct mail and DRTV.?

7. Mail Helps You Target

8. Mail Delivers Results

Whatever its evolution, direct mail ultimately continues to resonate with marketers for one primary reason: It gets results. Robert Salta, owner of Maryland-based DirectMail.com and a 30-year direct marketing veteran, has strong views about mail?s staying power: ?It?s all about results. Direct mail works,? he says. ?The majority of people will open and read direct mail, but often will choose to ignore e-mail solicitations. The fundamentals of direct mail haven?t changed, partly because their efficacy has been proven time after time. What has changed is the advent of data and digital print technology, and both have benefited direct mail immeasurably.?

Record-breaking stellar explosion helps astronomers understand far-off galaxy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Astronomers took advantage of the most distant supernova of its type to probe a galaxy some 9.5 billion light years away. The light from the exploding star, discovered by Pan-STARRS with followup spectroscopic observations by the Gemini North telescope and the Multiple Mirror Telescope, confirmed that the gas environment between the stars in the distant galaxy is "reassuringly normal.

An international research team, led by Edo Berger of Harvard University, made the most of a dying star's fury to probe a distant galaxy some 9.5 billion light-years distant. The dying star, which lit the galactic scene, is the most distant stellar explosion of its kind ever studied. According to Berger, "It's like someone turned on a flashlight in a dark room and suddenly allowed us to see, for a short time, what this far-off galaxy looks like, what it is composed of."

The study, published recently in The Astrophysical Journal, describes how the researchers used the exploding star's light (called an ultra-luminous core-collapse supernova) as a probe to study the gas conditions in the space between the host galaxy's stars. Berger says the findings reveal that the distant galaxy's interstellar conditions appear "reassuringly normal" when compared to those seen in the galaxies of our local universe. "This shows the enormous potential of using the most luminous supernovae to study the early universe," he says. "Ultimately it will help us understand how galaxies like our Milky Way came to be."

The discovery of the dying star in this distant galaxy was made using images from the Pan-STARRS1 survey telescope on Haleakala in Maui, Hawai'i. "These are the types of exciting and unexpected applications that appear when a new capability comes on line," said John Tonry, one of the study's co-authors and supernovae researcher at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy. Tonry adds, "Pan-STARRS is pioneering a new era in deep, wide-field, time-critical astronomy -- and this is just the beginning." After the Pan-STARRS discovery, spectroscopic follow-up studies using the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona and the 8-meter Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i provided the data used by the team to probe the gas of the distant galaxy's interstellar environment.

The spectra revealed the signatures of a distant ultra-luminous supernova, and equally important, the unique fingerprints of iron and magnesium within the distant galaxy that hosted the explosion. The galaxy itself contains a very young population of stars (~15 to 45 million years old) with a mass totaling some 2 billon Suns.

Left: Portion of the Gemini spectrum of PS1-11bam from December 5 containing several interstellar absorption features of Fe II and Mg II at z = 1.566 (black). The error spectrum is shown in blue. For comparison we plot the GRB composite spectrum of Christensen et al. (2011). Right: A zoom-in on the relevant Fe II and Mg II lines demonstrates the similarity to GRB absorption spectra. Also shown is the [O II]3727 emission line at z = 1.567 from the January 1 Gemini spectrum.

The ultra-luminous supernova explosion belongs to a relatively recently-identified and special breed of exploding stars. They are some 10-100 times more luminous than their ordinary less-energetic cousins and unusually blue in color. While the process leading to their demise is still being explored, evidence points to the central core-collapse of a star having as much as 100 times the mass of our Sun. The collapse triggers an enormous explosion that blasts prodigious amounts of heavier elements through the star's enormous outer layers before expanding into space.

Traditionally, astronomers have used two techniques to study distant galaxies: They would either; 1) look directly for chemical elements leaving bright imprints on the galaxy's spectrum of light; or 2) search indirectly for dark signatures in the spectrum of an even more distant quasar, which reveals chemical elements in an intervening system that have absorbed light along our line of sight.

Recently, astronomers have supplanted these methods with another: seeking dark absorption imprints in the afterglows of "gamma-ray bursts" (GRBs); these brief flashes are the brightest and most energetic explosions in the universe, but they fade away within hours. The method is also limited by the need for expensive Earth-orbiting satellites to first detect and pinpoint a burst's location with precision before astronomers can make ground-based studies.

"The beauty of studying distant galaxies using ultra-luminous supernovae as a tool is that it eliminates the need for satellites and offers more time for study," says Alicia Soderberg of Harvard University. "A typical ultra-luminous supernova can take several weeks to fade away."

The study by Berger and his team provides the ?rst direct demonstration that ultra-luminous supernovae can serve as probes of distant galaxies. Their results suggest that with the future combination of large survey and spectroscopic telescopes ultra-luminous supernovae could be used to probe galaxies 90 percent of the way back to the Big Bang.

The Decreasing Workstation Upgrade Cycle | The Business Edition

Since computer workstations became widespread in offices, regular upgrades were considered to be a necessary expense. As new software was release, businesses had to upgrade their workstations to keep up with the system requirements. Recent technology, however, is changing this upgrade process, and many businesses are holding off on their upgrades. Here are some of the factors that are causing this change.

1. Better technology

Computers hardware is still consistently improving. The advances in processor speed has slowed, but computers are being released with more processors than the previous generation, and the price of RAM continues to drop. The system requirements of software, however, are not keeping pace. For office software, computers that would otherwise have been considered obsolete are able to run modern software fine, and businesses are choosing to use their computers as long as they perform well.

2. Skipped OS updates

Platforms are also being updated less frequently. Businesses are finding little utility in upgrading their operating systems, which allows them to stick with older hardware. Many businesses find that Windows XP is sufficient for their needs, and some have not upgraded since switching to Windows XP years ago. Windows Vista is largely considered a flop, but much of its trouble came because businesses had already developed their workflows to their satisfaction. Windows 7 has become popular, but many experts are questioning if users will upgrade to the next iteration of Windows.

3. Telecommuting

A growing number of businesses are allowing staff to work from home for at least part of the week. Because of this, companies need to ensure that their software is compatible with the computers staff members use at home. Some companies are choosing to use older versions of office software instead of upgrading. Even in cases where new software would be beneficial, companies are valuing the reduced hardware costs and telecommuting ability more highly than updated software.

4. The cloud paradigm

The cloud paradigm is sweeping through the business world. Much like the era of thin clients, cloud networks do not have high system requirements for workstations. Each workstation needs to have an appropriate networking card, a web browser and, in some cases, appropriate support software. The CPU-intensive tasks, however, are often handled by the server, and each workstation merely needs to be able to display what the server computers. This paradigm also has the advantage of centralized storage and the ability to share RAM between computers. Companies can simply upgrade their servers at their demands increase, and further developments may actually reduce workstations? system requirements.

Computer upgrades in early years were driven by the inability of hardware to operate as efficiently as possible. Many experts, however, now believe that computers of today are capable of handling the vast majority of what businesses require, and most expect companies to increase the time between workstation upgrades.

Syrian opposition leader criticizes US

BEIRUT (AP) ? The head of the main Syrian opposition group seeking to oust President Bashar Assad criticized U.S. officials Tuesday for saying it was premature to speak about a transitional Syrian government.

The comments came on the same day a car bomb ripped through a Damascus suburb, killing 12 people, according to Syria's official state news agency. Activists also said an airstrike in the town of Kfar Nabl in Idlib killed at least 13 people as fighting raged nationwide.

International diplomatic efforts have so far failed to stem the bloodshed. The leader of the Syrian National Council called on the United States and other allies to take decisive action instead of placing blame on the divided opposition.

Abdelbaset Sieda was responding to the U.S. reaction to French President Francois Hollande's assertion that the Syrian opposition should form a provisional government and promise that France would recognize it.

Hollande's statement, believed to be the first of its kind, was quickly shot down by U.S. officials who said it was premature to speak about a provisional government when Syria's fractured opposition hasn't even agreed yet on a transition plan.

The U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter, cited persistent disagreements among factions including the Syrian National Council, rival groups, opposition figures campaigning outside the country and rebels fighting the regime on the front line.

Sieda told The Associated Press that the Syrian National Council is making "serious" preparations and consulting with other groups and rebels to form a government that could fill the leadership vacuum if Assad falls.

"Yes there are differences within the Syrian opposition and this is normal in any country, but as long as we are agreed on a common vision, these differences can be overcome," Sieda said in a telephone interview.

Sieda admitted no names have been discussed and an announcement was not imminent but insisted various factions would eventually pull together.

He said the U.S. comments show the international community is "not ready" to be decisive when it comes to Syria and is trying to put all blame on the opposition.

"The international community must make a move before it's too late," he added.

Syria's opposition has been plagued by divisions and infighting since the start of the uprising last year, and forming a transitional government is fraught with difficulties.

In addition to the SNC, several other groups are known to be making similar plans, including a new alliance headed by veteran opposition figure Haitham Maleh.

Human rights groups say more than 20,000 people have been killed in Syria since the revolt against Assad began in March 2011.

Fighting persisted Tuesday in Aleppo ? the nation's largest city and commercial capital ? as well as the southern province of Daraa and eastern and northern provinces of Deir el-Zour and Idlib.

In Damascus, military helicopters dropped thousands of leaflets over the city and its suburbs, urging rebels to hand over their weapons or face "inevitable death."

The psychological warfare is part of a widening and deadly offensive to recapture areas near the capital that have fallen into rebel hands.

In Jaramana, the car bomb badly damaged a five-story apartment building, knocking out windows and shaving off balconies, according to an AP reporter who visited the scene. At least 10 cars also were charred.

The windows from two nearby buildings were shattered from the impact of the blast, and vegetables and fruits from a nearby vendor were strewn across the street.

SANA earlier reported that the blast targeted a funeral procession for two people who were killed a day earlier in the area. It was the third bombing in Jaramana in the past 24 hours, according to SANA.

No further details were immediately available. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a bomb exploded during the funeral of two pro-regime civilians killed in overnight bombings in Jaramana.

Jaramana, southeast of Damascus, has a majority of Christians and Druze and is close to the capital's international airport. Pro-regime youth groups have recently set up checkpoints in the area to try to stop rebels from the neighboring Ghota neighborhood from crossing over.

Those killed Tuesday included a 6-year-old girl, Farah, who was playing in the street with her brother when the blast hit. Her brother was wounded.

"Where is my Farah?" her 24-year-old mother Hoda Mohammed, asked repeatedly as she wept on the street.

For more than a month, the military has been fighting major battles against rebels in the outskirts of Damascus and its suburbs while engaged in what appears to be a stalemated fight in the north against rebels for control of Aleppo, the nation's largest city and commercial capital.

The government recently has stepped up its offensive to recapture rebellious districts on the capital's periphery, and hundreds of people have been killed in several days of shelling and clashes in the affected areas. Over the weekend evidence mounted of mass killings by regime forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya after it was stormed by troops.

Some of the leaflets dropped Tuesday, which were signed by the armed forces and the army's general command, read: "The Syrian army is determined to cleanse every inch in Syria and you have only two choices: Abandon your weapons ... or face inevitable death."

"No one will help you. They have implicated you in taking up arms against your compatriots," they said. "They drown in their pleasures while you face death. Why? And for whom?"

Syrian authorities blame the more than 17-month uprising on a foreign conspiracy and accuse oil-rich Gulf countries Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in addition to the U.S. and Turkey, of backing "terrorists" seeking to oust the regime.

Assad told an Iranian delegation this week that he was determined to crush the conspiracy against Syria "whatever the price."

Banner ads are ads which look like banners on online business websites. They are long and catchy. Some of them even blink. They are one of the first kinds of online advertisement and they continue to be used till now. When you click on a banner ad, you will be directed to the site of the business which placed the ad. There you will learn more about the product or service. If the landing page is convincing enough, then a purchase might soon take place.

Display ads is one of the most popular types of online advertising utilized today. They are somewhat similar with banner ads in the sense that they are placed on different sites, but display ads come in various shapes and sizes. They can also be in the form of static images or flash videos.

Floating Ads. Ever wondered why at times, when you visit a site, a sort of announcement pops out and obscures the webpage you are trying to check? It continues to ?float? unless you wait some 30 seconds or click on the ?x? icon. Once you do this, you can then view the page clearly. When you hit ?refresh? though, the ad will appear again. This is called a floating ad. Floating ads are very catchy that?s why some entrepreneurs think that they are one of the best online advertising techniques that every business must utilize.

Takeover ads are what they say they are?they take the site over. Usually, a huge ad is displayed at the landing page of the site. Then, the same message of the ad can be seen throughout in the forms of buttons, side bars, or banners. They can be quite effective in branding because visitors will have no choice but read the message repeatedly. Click-through rates are usually high when you have takeover ads.

Unicast ads are ads which have audio and video elements in them. They are said to be effective because they run very much like TV commercials. They only differ because unicast ads are run on browser windows and can be clicked on for further information.

These are the most popular types of online advertising. If you have an internet marketing business or you intend to start one, these ideas can help you market it effectively. Give them a thought and weigh which ones would deliver the results you want.

17 civilians beheaded in Afghanistan: officials

Seventeen civilians including two women were beheaded in a southern Afghanistan village in a region plagued by the Taliban insurgency, officials said Monday.

"Last night 17 local villagers, two women and 15 men, were beheaded by unknown people in Kajaki district," Daud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand provincial administration, told AFP.

"We don't know who was behind the killings at this time. We're investigating," Ahmadi said.

A senior police official in the province, Mohammad Ismael Hotak, confirmed the incident, giving a similar account.

Taliban insurgents are active in the troubled region and they have in the past been blamed for beheading local villagers, mostly over charges of spying for Afghan and US-led NATO forces.

Haji Musa Khan, a tribal elder in the neighbouring district of Musa Qala, said the region had seen a surge in such killings in recent months.

"We had three people beheaded during the month of Ramadan. Another person, the son of a tribal elder, was beheaded recently," he said.

Khan said the killings followed major military operations by Afghan and NATO troops in the area.

How to Get Easy Approval on Guaranteed Auto loans? | Loans

Finance | Loans | * Written by Alan Hendricks | Friday, 24 August 2012 22:13 | Word Count: 560

Do you want a low interest auto loan? Are you wondering whether it is actually possible to get a car loan? Most auto buyers think getting a car loan is very difficult. But, it is not. You can get an auto loan without much trouble by following these simple tips. Know them to get guaranteed approval on your auto loan.

Lenders

Don?t select lenders on an impulse. You must understand your approval chances with every lender and then apply for a vehicle loan. If you have a good credit score, banks and traditional institutions will easily offer you car loans. But, if you have a bad credit score, you must stay away from them. The reason is simple. You don?t want unnecessary hits on your credit report from a lender who doesn?t offer auto loans to borrowers with bad credit score.

So, choose your lenders wisely. Once you have selected a few lenders, apply for an auto loan. Applying with multiple lenders ensures that the final choice of selecting the best car loan quote remains with you.

Paper-Work

Lenders want to make sure that they are taking a correct decision of offering you car loans. That?s why; they will ask for certain documents like your pay stubs, credit reports, bank statements , tax related documents, etc. to get a clear picture of your financial standing. If you have filed for bankruptcy, they will also check whether you have permission to incur new debts.

When you have to submit so many documents, it is better to prepare for it. It will show you as a responsible borrower who has done his homework. Also, when you have your papers ready, your car loan process will definitely speed up.

Down Payment

You can improve your approval chances by making a substantial down payment of 10%- 20%. Higher down payment reduces the lender?s risk and also the loan amount. When you put money down, it will help the lender in considering you as a low risk borrower. Thus, it will also reduce your interest rates.

Co-Signer

It is tough to search for a co-signer today. But, if you can manage one, it will increase your approval chances. When you have a co-signer, the lender?s risk is reduced. This is because he knows he can get back his money from the co-signer if you fail to make regular payments.

All these tips can substantially improve your car loan approval chances. It might be difficult for everyone to follow each and every thing discussed in the article. But, the more you follow, the better are your chances for guaranteed approval.

All the best!

Do not let bad credit make you a victim. Instead, start improving your credit score with us. For EZautofinance.net,credit history is not the only factor for car loan approval. We offer guaranteed auto loans for people with any credit. Re-establish your credit score by getting approved for bad credit auto loans today.

How to read GPS data (RS232) by BeagleBone (3.3V TTL) - All ...

Hello,
I am trying to read GPS data via BeagleBone. GPS is giving me RS232 ( +/- 12V), I can read this with no problem with serial port on PC. I understand that BeagleBOne accept only 3,3V, so I used MAX232EIN to lower RS232 to TTL level. After that I can not read output using my serial port on PC. I get some gibberish. Looking at the oscilloscope I see output after MAX232 of 0-5V, inverted as compare to original signal and good quality. What is missing??
Can serial port read TTL signal?
My plans is also to use Logic Level Converter BOB-08745 by Sparkfun to get to 3.3 V level as needed by BeagleBOne.

Is my thinking correct, and why I can not read serial data after using MAX232 and converting RS232 to TTL?

I also did experiment by converting TTL signal back to RS232 using another channel of MAX232 and again signal became readable.

Thanks in advance
Robert

New wave of technologies possible after ground-breaking analysis tool for nanometer devices developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? The nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus -- developed by the University's Department of Physics and Astronomy -- will allow for further developments and new applications for nanotechnology which is increasingly used in harvesting solar energy, computing, communication developments and also in the medical field.

Scientists can now analyse nanostructures at an unprecedented level of detail without destroying the materials in the process, a limitation researchers across the world faced before the Sheffield experts' breakthrough.

Dr Alexander Tartakovskii, who led a team of researchers, said: "We have developed a new important tool for microscopy analysis of nanostructures. In the very tiny quantities of matter used in nanostructures the behaviour of electrons and photons is governed by new quantum effects, quite different from what happens in bulk materials. This makes them attractive for various new technologies.

"Development requires careful structural analysis, in order to understand how the nanostructures are formed, and how we can build them to enhance and control their useful properties. Existing structural analysis methods, key for the research and development of new materials, are invasive: a nanostructure would be irreversibly destroyed in the process of the experiment, and, as a result, the important link between the structural and electronic or photonic properties would usually be lost. This limitation is now overcome by our new techniques, which rely on inherently non-invasive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probing."

The results open a new way of nano-engineering, a full characterisation of a new material and new semiconductor nano-device without destroying them meaning more research and development and device fabrication processes.

Dr Tarakovskii added: "We have developed new techniques which allowed unprecedented sensitivity and enhancement of the NMR signal in nanostructures. Particular nanostructures of interest in our research are semiconductor quantum dots, which are researched widely for their promising photonic applications, and potential for the use in a new type of computer hardware employing quantum logic.

"The result of our experiments was quite unexpected and changed our understanding of the architecture of these nanomaterials: we learned new information about the chemical composition of quantum dots, and also how atom alignment inside the dots deviates from that of a perfect crystal. Importantly, many more measurements of optical and magnetic properties can be done on the same quantum dots which have undergone the NMR probing."

The development of the new techniques and all experimental work was carried out by Dr Evgeny Chekhovich in the group of Dr Alexander Tartakovskii at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Sheffield. Quantum dot samples used in this work have also been fabricated in Sheffield, in the EPSRC National Facility for III-V Semiconductor Technology.

Taylor Swift Crashed a Kennedy Wedding

Kathie Lee Gifford confirmed Taylor Swift crashed Kennedy wedding

TV host Kathie Lee Gifford confirmed that Taylor Swift was indeed asked to leave the wedding of her current boyfriend Conor Kennedy?s cousin, Kyle Kennedy, twice. She had witnessed it, having been related to the bride?s mother Victoria Gifford Kennedy, who happens to be her stepdaughter, making her Kyle?s grandmother by marriage.

Taylor Swift with boyfriend Conor Kennedy

Her boyfriend Conor was actually invited to the wedding, however he did not respond to the RSVP of the invitation. However, in fairness to Swift, it seems like she was not aware that they were not invited at the event.Victoria also politely asked the pop star to leave the reception, which was held at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, having been concerned that she might steal the limelight to the newlyweds.

Florida State football fun facts: 2012 players edition

Here is today's Florida State football fun facts, with unusual items and notes about players on the 2012 roster. On deck Friday: Florida State bowl history facts.

1. Running back Debrale Smiley of Thomasville, Ga., may have only carried the ball 11 times in the last two seasons for the Seminoles, but he's made his time in Tallahassee count in one important way: Smiley received his second degree in the spring, in communications.

2. More FSU players have birthdays in January, February and March (44) than any other three-month period. March 11 is a big day -- four FSU players have their birthdays that day, Dorian Earley, Sean Maguire, Dorsey Moore and Rodney Smith. So is December 30, when Chris Casher, Mario Pender and Maxx Moore celebrate their birthdays.

3. Seminoles players come from 16 states, with the most, naturally, coming from Florida with 87. Georgia is second with 14 and Alabama third with five. The Seminoles have four international players, Bjoern Werner (Germany), Melenik Watson (England), Alexey Goloubev (Russia) and Daniel Glauser (Switzerland).

4. Florida State players combine to take 26 major programs of study, ranging from social science and crimonology to economics, hospitality and tourism and nutrition. And if the NFL doesn't come calling, tight end Nick O'Leary appears ready to enter the family business. The grandson of World Golf Hall of Fame member and 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, O'Leary is majoring in professional golf management.

5. Long snapper Dax Dellenbach played football, lacrosse and track at North Broward Prep in Fort Lauderdale.

6. Offensive guard Jacob Fahrenkrug once weighed 400 pounds early in high school and used football and other sports to get down to his current weight of 324 pounds.

7. Bobby Hart, a returning starter at tackle, was good enough in basketball to make an AAU travel team, where he went against Jared Sullinger and Austin Rivers. Hart also made the Florida state wrestling tournament as a sophomore at St. Thomas Aquinas.

8. One of the favorite activities for sophomore defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan is to attend "mud bogs" at the ranch outside Lake City owned by former Florida State All-American Reinard Wilson. Jernigan sometimes drives trucks in the mud but mostly watches. "I'm a country boy," he said. "I love playing in the mud."

9. It's safe to say junior fullback Chad Abram has a nose for the ball. When he was a junior safety at Lakeland Kathleen, he blocked five punts and had five interceptions.

10. Senior tight end Jonathan Johnson plays three instruments, the trombone, tuba and trumpet.

RolePlayGateway?

What if, one day, nobody died? What if, one day, everyone became immortal?
Would this day be considered a miracle? Or would this be the day of our downfall?

This day, this miracle day, has come. People on the earth have suddenly stopped dying. Formerly lethal wounds have now become little more than an annoyance. Tumors are now all benign. All diseases are now no more lethal than the common cold. This has to be a good thing, right?

Wrong. These people are the living dead. They should be dead, freed from suffering, but instead they are forced to stay alive. They still feel the pain of their conditions, and many have no chance of recovering purely from how severe their injuries or illnesses are. Those who have diseases have now become plague rats; they are carriers of the disease and can easily spread them to other humans.

Along with the risk of disease and the never healing injuries comes another threat: the population. With no deaths, the population of earth is steadily rising. Within four months, the earth will be unable to support human life.

There is a streak of hope in this 'Miracle Day'. Governments from around the world are gathering together in order to assemble a team of people, a team to end this Miracle Day. This team is made up of the best of the best and the worst of the worse. Scientists, doctors, spies, assassins, thieves, and murderers. It does not matter if they were from the highest level of society or were found in its very dregs. If they are of use, they are on this team.

You have been requested to join the team. Will you join to put a stop to this cursed Miracle Day?

-------
Basically, Miracle Day is a roleplay about a group of characters who has to end 'Miracle Day' in order to save the world. It is loosely based off of Torchwood: Miracle Day (hence the name), but only very loosely. Really, the only thing similar between the roleplay and Torchwood: Miracle Day is the very beginning of the plot. Therefore, you do not need to have seen any episodes of Torchwood (or even know what Torchwood is, for that matter) to join this roleplay.

It is going to be a literate roleplay, so proper grammar and spelling is appreciated. The minimum amount necessary to write is 200 words per post, which shouldn't be a particularly difficult goal to reach, especially not once the roleplay gets going.

So, if you're interested, check it out!

Bathroom RemodelingThe homeowner can really do themselves a favor in today?s economy by doing a bit of remodeling. The price of construction materials has been down and many contractors are offering very competitive estimates to keep their crews working.

The general uproar created in the household by a remodeling project can usually be reduced by doing one room at a time. Partial remodeling usually concentrates on two rooms ? the bathroom and the kitchen. There are a number of things that can be done in a bathroom that will enhance your everyday routine and could increase the value of your home without a tremendous investment. Watch our tutorial?on installing the Moen io Digital vertical spa and see just one new bathroom extra that is available.

The green age is with us and that has brought some improvements that you might want to consider when renovating a bathroom. Most new showerheads and faucets now use less water than older ones. These low flow products can take a bit off the water bill and be friendlier to the environment. Your carbon footprint does include power needed to get water processed and sent to your home, so low flow faucets and shower heads are a must if minimizing your carbon footprint is an end goal. There are also toilets that help reduce the water used in the home so be advised when upgrading this fixture too.

A conversation with one of our Lorain County plumbing and heating?experts is a logical place to start when getting information on bathroom remodeling. Over the course of the last 5 decades, we have provided the Lorain County area with expert advice, professional workmanship and the latest in advances to make any remodeling job a success.
