HANNIBAL, MO (WGEM) -- If you have kids heading back to school in a couple weeks, this weekend may be a good time to buy all those school supply needs.
Missouri's 'Back to School' Sales Tax Holiday runs Friday thru Sunday.
Missouri's 4.225% sales tax will not be added onto certain purchases.
Even though that percent may not sound like a lot, when you're loading up for a new school year, the 4% could add up, especially if you're planning on buying more expensive items.
Manager of Hannibal's JCPenny, Jason Freidel,?said some customers get confused on what is and what is not tax free eligible.
"Anything that would be used for school, like jeans, tops, shoes, backpacks are all included in tax free. Anything that's kind of like an accessory is excluded."
Angela Bloodgood was out shopping at the JC Penny in Hannibal Friday, and said with two kids going back to school every bit counts.?
"Shopping for two kids this year so therefore it makes sense to and to hit sales whenever possible," said Bloodgood.?
Any out-of-state resident can take part in Missouri's 'Back to School' savings holiday. T
The purchases just have to be made in the state.
Iowa is also offering a sales tax holiday the same weekend. For more information on what qualifies click http://www.iowa.gov/tax/educate/holiday1.html.
Illinois is not participating in a sales tax holiday this year.
And there is a tax free holiday in Iowa as well...that is taking place this weekend also. Illinois is *not* offering a sales tax holiday this year.
