How To Set Up An Email Marketing Campaign ? Part 10: Driving Traffic to Your Squeeze Page

Now that your email marketing system is all in place all that you need to do is drive traffic to your squeeze page. No matter how good your email marketing system is, without traffic it is worthless!
There?s two types of traffic you can use to get visitors to your site; instant traffic and perpetual traffic.
Instant Traffic
There?s a lot of ways to get instant traffic to your squeeze page. Some is free and other you have to pay for. Typically the free methods are time consuming and the paid methods don?t take much time to set up.
Traffic Exchanges
Traffic exchanges work in this way; you view other people?s websites (and earn credits) and then you use those credits to have your own website (i.e. your squeeze page) shown before other traffic exchange members.
While traffic exchanges are an easy way to have other people view your squeeze page, they are not very effective. The most effective traffic exchange that I?ve found is TrafficSwarm.
Classified Ads
Classifieds sites like Craigslist are a good way to get free traffic to your squeeze page. Make sure you post your ad in the right section or you can risk having your account flagged.
Solo Ads
You can purchase a mail out of your free offer to be made to someone?s list or to a membership site. This is called a solo ad.
Solo ads are paid for up-front. Before purchasing a solo ad from an individual it?s highly recommended that you get references first. A good place to look for solo ad sellers is on Safe Swaps.
Pay-Per-Click Ads
You can place ads to appear on Facebook based on prerequisites that you choose. This includes only showing ads to people with certain interests, in certain countries, etc. Because of this, you can have your ads to be extremely targeted.
You can also choose how much you?re willing to pay per click. Knowing in advance how much a lead is worth to you is very helpful in creating a profitable pay-per-click ad campaign.
Perpetual Traffic
While instant traffic certainly has its place and its advantages, what I personally prefer to develop is perpetual traffic.
Perpetual traffic is streams of traffic that continue to come in for months and even years after you?ve initially set it up. It?s traffic instruments that you set up once and literally forget about it!
Video Marketing
Youtube is one of the most visited sites in the world. The amount of views that videos get on Youtube is truly amazing? and the beautiful thing is that you can upload as many videos as you want on to Youtube for free.
You?ll want to create short, ?how-to? videos that will get the attention of your prospective leads. You?ll want these videos to share something of good value so that you can gain the trust of your viewers.
In your videos tell them to go to your site (your squeeze page) for more great free training. You can also have your squeeze page url as a caption at the bottom of your video and also put it in the description of your video. A full url in your video description comes up as a clickable link. Put it at the beginning of your description.
Blogging
Blogs are a great way to get lots of targeted and free search engine traffic.
Don?t use free blogging services, but for the best SEO results, register a domain just for your blog and install WordPress on that domain.
It?s important to add content on a regular basis. When it comes to creating content for your blog you kill two birds with one stone. Take the content from one of your videos and transcribe it into an article for your blog (or vice versa).
After you?ve created your article, find a relevant keyword phrase to target and make sure that keyword phrase appears within the blog post?s title and within the content.
You can use a free WordPress plugin called the ?All-in-One SEO Pack? to also have your keyword included in your meta tags.
Have an opt-in form on the sidebar of your blog and also put links to your squeeze page throughout your blog within the posts that you publish.
Kindle Publishing
Create a report that you can give away free or sell on the Kindle ebook publishing platform (tip: you can compile some articles from your blog to do this). Within your reports, have links to your squeeze page.
There?s a lot of other ways to drive traffic to your squeeze page but the ones listed above are a great start.
Conclusion
Congratulations! If you?ve followed everything that is mentioned in this report you would have set up a great email marketing campaign and have begun already to build your list.
Building a list is the most important thing you can do for your business; whether your business is an online one or an offline one. List building is all about creating a solid foundation, one that you can continue to build on for years and years to come.
As with all things worthwhile, you may get discouraged while building your list. It?s happened to me and to most of the people that I?ve helped over the years. If this happens to you, don?t be alarmed and by all means don?t give up.

Google Takeout lets you retrieve your original YouTube videos
Up until now, when you uploaded a video from your computer or phone to YouTube, those files would be trans-coded and you would not be able to get them back in their original quality.
Thanks to Data Liberation Front, an engineering team at Google, you now have the ability to download videos you have uploaded to YouTube in their original quality. Mind you, this is only for your files, so copyright issues are not a factor here.
Beyond your YouTube videos, Google Takeout also empowers you to manage your contacts, Picasa photos, Google Voice features, documents off Google Drive and more. It all starts by going to the Google Takeout page, and selecting ?Create Archive? of the services you select.The process is not instantaneous, if you have uploaded a lot of videos or other files, it may take some time to get them ready for download. That is not really a problem because the service will send you an email when everything is ready.
This is a great added feature to Google Takeout. How many videos have you uploaded to YouTube from your phone? How many times have you lost, broken, had stolen, switched your phone and maybe did not back up those videos? Now, you can get them back and that is pretty cool.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: The Proud Lefty Says Teachers Union Has ?Huge Problems?
The actress was unapologetic this week as she promoted the movie, telling interviewers that classifying ?Won?t Back Down? as an unequivocally anti-union movie is an ?oversimplified? way of viewing the issue.
?Clearly -- and I don't know anyone who?d disagree -- there are huge problems with the teachers union,? she told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday. ?So you can be in support of a teachers union and unions in general, but if you don't take the time to look at things that are broken ... then it will fall apart completely.? ?
In the interview, Gyllenhaal said she comes from a family of proud leftists, and that she herself is staunchly pro-union. However, she also suggested that the quickness with which critics have come out to blast ?Won?t Back Down? as a crack against the labor movement shows intolerance among the pro-union camp. ?Can we not even take a look at ways that the teachers union isn't functioning without being called anti-union?? she said. ?
Earlier this week, Gyllenhaal gave a similar explanation when she appeared on NBC?s ?Today? show, saying that she supports unions fundamentally but ?finds some faults? with them. ?
In ?Won?t Back Down,? Gyllenhaal?s character invokes the so-called parent-trigger law -- a real-life statute first passed in California, which allows parents and teachers to reclaim a failing school. The character?s attempts to reclaim her daughter?s Pittsburgh school are hindered by a bullying union representative played by Holly Hunter.
Last month, Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, issued a public letter criticizing ?Won?t Back Down? as a ?false and misleading depiction of teachers and unions.?
Union supporters protested screenings of the movie in New York and Los Angeles. And Michael Mulgrew, president of New York City?s United Federation of Teachers, told the New York Times that the movie -- which is inspired by an actual incident in which a California parent invoked the parent-trigger law -- is a ?work of fiction.? He told the paper that, in real life, previous attempts by parents to reclaim schools have failed.

Challenging Bill McKibben and the Green Establishment: The ...
I?m debating?Bill McKibben this November on the environmental impact of fossil fuels. Here is a preview.
99.9% of discussion of fossil fuels and our environment ignores the single most important fact about fossil fuels and our environment: fossil fuels have made our environment amazingly good.
The difference between a healthy environment and an unhealthy environment can be summed up in one word, and it?s not ?CO2? or ?climate? or ?temperature.? It?s ?development.?
Every region of the world, in its undeveloped state, is full of deadly environmental hazards such as indoor air pollution, bacteria-filled water, excessive cold, excessive heat, lack of rainfall, too much rainfall, powerful storms, disease-carrying insects, lack of sanitation, disease-carrying crops and animals, etc.
And yet some nations, such as the US, have the best air, water, indoor temperature, crops, sanitation, water supplies, storm-protection, disease-prevention, sanitation, and overall environmental quality in human history?while others are plagued by heat waves, cold snaps, drought, storms, crop failures, malaria and dozens of other dread diseases, filth, dung-burning fires, lack of clean drinking water.
The reason for this is development?the improvement of nature to meet human needs. Development means water purification systems, irrigation, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, genetically-improved crops, dams, sea walls, heating, air conditioning, sturdy homes, drained swamps, central power stations, vaccination, pharmaceuticals, and so on.
Every aspect of development has one common requirement: cheap, plentiful, reliable energy. And we would not have cheap, plentiful, reliable energy without the fossil fuel industry. Fossil fuels have transformed hazardous natural environments the world over into healthy human environments?environments that include an unprecedented ability to explore and safely enjoy nature.
Whether you?re drinking clean drinking water, listening to a thunderstorm with pleasure instead of fear, or going to the Grand Canyon, you should be thanking Big Coal, Big Oil, and Big Gas.
And when you hear heartbreaking stories of children with diseases that we once had but no longer do?malaria, tuberculosis, even the plague?you should commit yourself to bringing about a world that produces more energy. Much more energy?at today?s global level of energy production, only 2.5 billion people out of 7 billion could use as much energy as Europeans do.
Energy Poverty, not CO2, Is the Problem
But to listen to the environmental establishment, the cause of the problems of the bad environments is not the blatant deficiency in energy and development. The alleged problem is the energy that makes development possible: the 85% of energy production that comes from fossil fuels. Generating power from fossil fuels increases the trace percentage of CO2 in our atmosphere. (Revealingly, ?environmentalists? find reasons to oppose the other, CO2-free, sources of practical power, nuclear and hydroelectric.) That CO2 is, amazingly, the villain in all our environmental ills.
That the good environments exist is an inconvenient truth. If acknowledged, one could not pretend that the environmental problems of North Mexico vs. the environmental health of South Texas were caused by today?s climate.
Consider this highlight clip from Bill McKibben, ?the nation?s leading environmentalist? according to The Boston Globe, in which he blames certain increases in malaria, dengue fever, cholera, and salmonella on CO2-induced climate change.
What about a lack of development, of proper sanitation, and, above all, of the wonderful synthetic malaria-killer that is DDT? More broadly, what about a lack of the cheap, reliable fossil fuel energy that has underlain all of Western industrial and technological development?
It doesn?t even get a mention?let alone the starring role it deserves in any discussion of improving our environment.
Unfortunately, it rarely gets a mention by the other side, either. Advocates and producers of fossil fuels have largely failed to make the environmental case for fossil fuels, and thus ceded the environmental high ground to McKibben and the rest of the catastrophic global warming movement.
McKibben?s Challenge to the Fossil-Fuel Industry
This concession reached a gory climax in July, when McKibben published the article ?Global Warming?s Terrifying New Math,? in which he called for a movement to condemn and dismantle the fossil fuel industry. He called the fossil fuel industry ?Public Enemy Number One to the survival of our planetary civilization.? ?[W]e need,? he has said in his popular book Eaarth (the extra ?a? represents a damaged planet) ?to cut our fossil fuel use by a factor of twenty over the next few decades.?
The article was a sensation. It received 120,000 ?Likes? on Facebook?which an exultant Center for American Progress blogger described as ?monster social media numbers of the kind usually reserved for pieces on HuffPost about Kim Kardashian in a bikini.? And it was celebrated by citizens and intellectual elites alike.
McKibben had declared the fossil fuel industry to be immoral, an environmental menace?he had declared open war on the fossil fuel industry?the war was celebrated by the media?and yet the industry was silent. Keep in mind McKibben is no piker?this is a man who in 2009 organized 5200 simultaneous protests for 350.org.
? and My Challenge to McKibben
Someone needed to say something. And not just on a corner of the Internet the environmental establishment could evade, but somewhere that the truth could not be ignored?a public debate, recorded for posterity and promoted around the world.
So I challenged McKibben to a public debate. I stated my reasons on YouTube, and I offered McKibben $10,000 and a venue at Duke University (thanks to the Program on Values and Ethics in the Marketplace). To his credit, he quickly accepted.
Thus, on November 5, at Duke University, McKibben will be arguing that ?fossil fuels are a risk to the planet.? I will be arguing that ?fossil fuels improve the planet.?
This is the first debate ever where a world-class environmentalist will be challenged by the powerful environmental case for fossil fuels. It is an opportunity to show the world how the truth about fossil fuels stacks up against the best the other side has to offer.
But this opportunity will only exist to the extent we can marshal the resources to get the word out.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) ? Don Trachte's cowlick has been tamed. Mary Hall is no longer a towhead. Butch Corbett is still thin, but not the beanpole he once was. And Tom Paquin's carrot top is thinner and grayer.
Twenty or so people who were children when they posed in the 1940s and '50s for their neighbor Norman Rockwell in the Vermont town of Arlington are reuniting there Saturday to share their memories of the great American artist who once lived in their midst.
Rockwell captured scenes of everyday life in his paintings and illustrations for covers of the Saturday Evening Post, for the Boy Scouts and for its publication Boys' Life, art now considered the very definition of Americana. He would pay his neighbors $5 a pop to appear in Hallmark cards, in calendars and on magazine covers that ended up gracing the coffee tables and littering the tree houses of millions of magazine readers young and old.
"The Saturday Evening Post came out weekly, and we couldn't wait to get it to see what was on the cover," said Hall, who posed for Rockwell four times. "You could always recognize who it was."
She appeared as a blond girl wrapped in a quilt and being carried out of a flood by a Boy Scout in an image that became a cover of Boys' Life, and as a teenager in a skirt, white blouse, bobby socks and loafers on a Post cover from 1948. It was called "Christmas Homecoming" and showed people welcoming home a young man who's carrying a suitcase full of dirty laundry.
An estimated 300 people from the area modeled for Rockwell during his 14 years in the southern Vermont town. Of the 70 or so still living, the oldest is 93 (he can't make it to the reunion). Many still live in and around Arlington.
Among the models planning to join in is Mary Whalen, who posed for the popular image of a rugged-looking school girl with braids and a black eye, waiting outside a principal's office.
The former models have gotten together before, but this weekend is special. They have been invited to view a new gallery of Rockwell prints and memorabilia that is taking the place of a recently closed Rockwell museum. The new owners are treating them to a turkey lunch in honor of Rockwell's famous painting of an excited family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner.
"I think it's important that the models keep the tradition of the image that Vermont, Arlington in particular, was important in Norman Rockwell's biography. That while he lived in Arlington he did his best work, probably ... and his local models were Arlington people," said James "Buddy" Edgerton, 82, who lived next door to Rockwell, his wife and three sons and modeled for him at least a dozen times.
Rockwell was a full-fledged member of the town, attending school basketball games and square dances, and had a great sense of humor, his neighbors recall. But as one of America's foremost artists, he could be as precise as any high-fashion photographer.
He would first have the models photographed and then would sketch a drawing. Sometimes the session in his studio took minutes, sometimes several hours. He always had a pipe in his mouth, and he joked around with the kids to make them comfortable.
"Rockwell had these images in his head, and he wanted you to smile or be wide-eyed in a certain way. You have to be a little actor, you see, and I probably was a little embarrassed," said Trachte, who was 5 or 6 when he posed for a painting of a little boy and girl in pajamas, holding hands and peering up at Santa Claus. Years later, Trachte and his brother found a Rockwell hidden in a wall at his parents' house; "Breaking Home Ties" sold at auction in 2006 for $15.4 million.
Rockwell knew just what he wanted, instructing the children to sit or stand in certain positions with particular expressions and to wear certain clothing, often providing Scout uniforms, or in one case, the velvet outfit that Hall wore for the cover of an edition of the book "Little Lord Fauntleroy."
"I find his detail just amazing," said Hall, whose father was a real estate agent who sold Rockwell his first and second home in town.
She noted that Rockwell managed to paint the small piece of tape around her leg from a sprained ankle that appeared above her bobby sock: "He didn't miss the details."
Edgerton ? who went on to write the memoir "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families," about a farm boy growing up next door to the Rockwells ? modeled for his neighbor mostly as a Scout, with his image published in four calendars.
The last time he modeled was in 1964, after Rockwell had moved about 65 miles away to Stockbridge, Mass., now home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. Edgerton appeared as a Scoutmaster with his son, then 9, in a painting called "Growth of a Leader," showing four profiles of a Scout progressing from a child to an adult with a graying sideburn ? much like Edgerton has today.
"He was a wonderful guy," Edgerton said. "He made you feel you were the most important person in the world when you were doing it."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For people in certain professions -- acting, modeling, and even politics -- this phrase rings particularly true. Previous studies have examined how our social judgments of pictures of people are influenced by factors such as whether the person is smiling or frowning, but until now one factor has never been investigated: the distance between the photographer and the subject. According to a new study by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this turns out to make a difference -- close-up photo subjects, the study found, are judged to look less trustworthy, less competent, and less attractive.
The new finding is described in this week's issue of the open-access journal PLoS ONE.
Pietro Perona, the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech, came up with the initial idea for the study. Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject. Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits -- with a similar effect on their viewers -- so he collaborated with Ralph Adolphs, Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology, and CNS graduate student Ronnie Bryan (PhD '12) to gather opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.
"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," explains Bryan. "Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting -- but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments."
That subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.
"This was a surprising, and surprisingly reliable, effect," says Adolphs. "We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them."
Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs says: in photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away. These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space -- which on average is about three to four feet from the body.
In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear. "Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness,'' notes Perona.
He says that the group is now planning to build on these findings, using machine-vision techniques -- technologies that can automatically analyze data in images. For example, one application would be for a computer program to have the ability to evaluate any face image in a magazine or on the Internet and to estimate the distance at which the photo was taken.
"The work might also allow us to estimate the perceived trustworthiness of a particular face image," says Perona. "You could imagine that many people would be interested in such applications -- particularly in the political arena."
The study, "Perspective Distortion from Interpersonal Distance Is an Implicit Visual Cue for Social Judgments of Faces," was funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Apple iPhone 5 first impressions: Beauty is in the hand of the beholder
As I wrote last week, I preordered my Apple iPhone 5 for $820 (full price to keep my Verizon unlimited LTE data) and after spending all day with it I have to say that it was completely worth it. Like all of you, I have seen photos of the iPhone 5, but you really have to hold it in your hand to appreciate the fantastic design. When I hold it next to my Galaxy S III or Nokia Lumia 900 it appears to be more of an iPhone nano rather than the latest generation of iPhone and makes these devices look HUGE. The Apple iPhone 5 truly is a product of beauty and a great improvement over the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Hardware and design
I owned an iPhone 4S for several months, but wasn't personally thrilled with the glass front and back and the design. I was very pleased to see Apple move to using a mostly metal back with just two small glass areas. I also am pleased with the thinner form factor and find it amazing how much technology Apple was able to squeeze into such a small form factor. The metal sides and beveled edges, along with the cool new color schemes add to the element of high quality design.
The display is longer and does add to the usefulness of the browser and some apps. I am able to reach the entire display with the thumb on one hand and am already finding it convenient to use the iPhone 5 with one hand. It is something I did not think too much about before using the iPhone 5, but now I really notice that two hands are required to use my other smartphones.
I know there has been lots of controversy of the new iPhone connector, but I have to chime in and say I am already a big fan of it. I don't have lots of money tied into iPhone docks or anything so the impact of changing connectors does not affect me from a monetary standpoint. With so many smartphones implementing microUSB ports, I regularly try to connect charging cables upside down and am flipping them to fit. The convenience of being able to put the new connector into the iPhone 5 in either orientation is fantastic.
I took several photos and a couple videos and the camera did very well. My daughters use the front facing camera quite a bit for buddy photos and as you can see in my image gallery the photos from this 1.2 megapixel camera look good. Panorama seemed to work well too, but I did find it odd that you hold the phone in portrait orientation to pan it around and capture the image. It works much like other camera phones with arrows and directions on the display helping you capture a continuous image.
iOS 6
I haven't yet had the chance to extensively test out the new iOS 6 Maps that tech enthusiasts and the media seem to be slamming quite a bit. My sister-in-law updated her iPhone 4S and texted me that she loves the new Maps feature, especially the integrated voice navigation. It looks good and is quite fast, but I need to put it through much more testing.
I found Siri quite useful for creating reminders, but am already finding it much more useful for sports scores, launching apps, and checking out movie times. I haven't yet gotten Passbook to work at all and at this time it looks to be going the way of Newstand where it could get moved to the last page of my iPhone home screens.
Performance and experiences
I made a few phone calls and they sounded great, even at the Puyallup Fair. I also sent and received text messages and iMessages, along with sending and receiving several email messages. Communications is a strong element of iOS and the experience is excellent. Other phones have had the ability to quickly send a text when a call comes in so it was nice to see this function added to iOS 6.
The iPhone 5 is FAST! It is also a gorgeous work of art and if you have an iPhone 4 or earlier model with eligibility to upgrade then it really is a no brainer to upgrade to the iPhone 5. It's a bit tougher decision if you have to pay full price and my main focus over the next week will be to see if I can live with a much smaller display than what I have been using on the Samsung Galaxy S III. iOS apps are the best of all platforms and I understand there are a lot of developers working to enhance apps to support the longer display with many apps already submitted and waiting in the approval queue.

Verdant Tea: Selling Tea from Farm to Cup | Serious Eats: Drinks

We don't talk about tea the way we get to talk about coffee, at least in the U.S. In coffee, the idea of terroir has become something of a given. We seek out fresh beans and fresher roasts. We've started to care about the farmers who grow our beans, how they're treated, and how they treat their crops.
Tea, by comparison, gets stuck on the shelf: dried, stable, static.
David Duckler and his small team at Verdant Tea are looking to change that conversation.

Verdant Tea is a three-person company based out of Minneapolis. They sell a tightly curated selection of specialty Chinese teas that are a little unusual even by tea nerd standards. It's a list based on farmers the company has good relationships with; since they have friends in Laoshan, for example, they sell a lot of Laoshan tea.
What they do sell is fascinating stuff, the kind of tea that gives you pause and makes you think, wow, this really tastes like something! Coffee isn't the only brew that can evoke taste memories of blueberries, chocolate, and caramel?when good tea is handled right, it can take on just as wide a palette of flavors. And unlike coffee, which is brewed once and then discarded, quality tea leaves like Verdant's can be re-steeped again and again to expose the different flavors and textures present in the leaves.
The flavors we picked up from our tea samples were on the subtle side, but the texture and aroma were anything but. Brewing a cup of Laoshan Summer Harvest Green makes the air smell like there's biscuits in the oven, and the brewed tea feels so buttery and creamy on the tongue that it's almost like there's milk right in there?the beverage equivalent of trying Haagen Dazs for the first time after only eating Breyers. You don't come across this kind of texture every day; what makes this tea so different?
When I asked David what he and his company did differently, the gist of his response was impressively simple: they treat tea like an agricultural product, not a commodity. They work with tea farmers in China the way that chefs deal with farmers at the farmers' market. That means dealing with farmers personally, not through a broker; moving tea from harvest to sale fast, within the same growing season; and it means actively seeking out farmers growing their crops in the best way possible, with organic methods, not pesticides.
Verdant Tea is an unusual company because it shows what you can do when you treat tea like an actual plant, not a commodity or luxury good. So what specifically does that entail? And how does that work differ from other tea companies? I talked with David to find out.
How do you find your tea? I came to tea not as a businessman, but as a researcher. Along the way I made many deep and lasting friendships. We and the farmers are friends first and foremost. They sell us their best tea because we are friends, and because when your field is only 14 acres, and you carefully hand-pick every leaf, all of your tea is "the best."
How is tea different from other luxury import industries? The high end tea industry is not like coffee or chocolate. Because the farmer supplies the finished product, not the raw material, they reap the full rewards of their work. These farmers don't need help?they aren't the underprivileged workers being "saved" or uplifted through selling. They are our equals?in fact, I think of the farmers as my boss. I am working really hard to help people begin to think of the tea farmers I work with in the same way they consider local artisan beer brewers, or cheese producers.
What's the process of moving your tea to market? The tea is fresh because we buy tiny quantities on a relative scale. Instead of ocean freighting several tons of tea for next to nothing, we buy the whole 15-20 pound harvest of a farmer for that picking. As soon as the tea is finished drying, curling, etc., it is hand-packed in little vacuum-sealed 250 gram bags and air shipped to us. We can have a new harvest up for sale on our site one week after it is picked because we are a small company that moves quickly. Nobody else in the industry works at the breakneck speed that we do to get fresh tea in. We sell spring tea in the spring, summer harvest in the summer, and autumn harvest in the autumn. When we run out of a tea, we are out.
Why is it so difficult for consumers to find organic tea? What challenges do organic tea farmers face? You don't see a lot of [it] because it is very difficult to get the export licenses and documentation to work with such small ventures. Nearly impossible. I have the dumb luck of wonderful connections in China, and here at home in the logistics business that help me get the farmers certified for export. Normally Chinese export law forbids this kind of small-scale tea buying directly from farmers. The laws push importers into working with factory farms and brokers. I spend an immense amount of money on licensing and administrative fees, and expediting for the privilege to work with my friends.
So why is it worth it? If you grow tea near pine trees, it tastes like pine. If you grow it near orchids, it tastes like orchid. Many farmers even commit to a diet of rice and vegetables during the harvests so that there are no smells on their hands that could influence the tea. When you spray a tea with pesticides, you can taste it. You cannot lie about organic farming with tea. The leaf tells all.
But you don't advertise your tea as certified organic. Many of us are realizing that organic certification is only a first step to true connection with the food we eat and drinks we drink. It is a good first step, but problematic in its variable standards, lack of accessibility to small farmers, and ease of being gamed. The next step is to go straight to the source. That is what I am trying to do. I want people to feel even more confident in these teas than the trust that an anonymous sticker can provide.
